Ignoring all the flame baiting going on in this topic, the thing about Mass Effect 2 is that you are playing a series of "levels" but Bioware tried to disguise that. Now for the most part they did an excellent job of disguising the fact we were just playing a series of levels. If you need an example then there is the Galaxy Map which is not much more than a "mission select screen", but because Bioware put some thought and effort into it the Map it doesn't feel like a "mission select screen".
This is the problem with the Mission complete screen, it just re-inforces the fact you are just playing a series of levels. It is such a shame that Bioware couldn't find away to "disguise" the mission complete screens and make it feel less like we just finished a "level". If Bioware still feel that there is a need for the mission complete screen I really hope they make it optional via the email system.
As for the loading screens/elevators what ever solution Bioware come up with has to be better than the crappy movies we have right now that actually INCREASE the loading times. If there must be loading times then concentrate on reducing the length of them rather than prettifying them up and actually increasing load times.
Nice example with the Galaxy map!
And you're right, the Galaxy map is essentially a mission/level selection screen in disguise. It allows you let you think that you're choosing locations to travel around the galaxy when in actuality it is just a well designed mission selector screen. Also the soothing music in the background adds to the detail and really gives you that sense of scale.
So how come Bioware couldn't do this with the mission debriefs?
Baulder's Gate never had a Mission Complete Screen.
Neverwinter Knights never had a Mission Complete Screen
KOTOR never had a Mission Complete Screen
Jade Empire never had Mission Complete Screen
Mass Effect 1 never had a Mission Complete Screen
So why did ME2 have to have one?
I know that what I'm about to say might rage some people, but I connect this with the fact that Bioware made ME2 more of a shooter and less RPG. Bioware was so hellbent on making ME2 an "accessible" experience to the point where they felt like they had to hold the player's hand. With that being said, the Mission Complete screen came into the fray. It is a quick and more "accessible" way for the player to see his/her results/recap of the mission in terms of how much money they made, minerals they've gathered, equipment/upgrades they bought and found, and a final recap of what happened in the mission.
Will I freak out if ME3 has this? No, but I wouldn't be happy. I'll just do what I always do and ALWAYS quickly press the B button so that I can hurry pass the screen as it if never happened.
