Twelve hours into my first save, I got this weird glitch:
http://steamcommunit...7895?tab=public
http://steamcommunit...086/?tab=public

All the characters (and possibly some objects like explosive containers? it's hard to tell) become flat and pixellated. It happened soon after leaving the Mako on Noveria. Saving and restarting the game didn't help. Any ideas?

I'm running the Steam version on Win 7 64bit.

I believe this may be an issue with unsupported graphics cards. You may wish to try upgrading your graphics drivers of course. As the fine person above me points out, you may wish to drop an info dump here on your system details.

Your card is an intergrated graphics card that is fine for watching HD video but not for gaming. Sorry.

Thank you for your reply, are you saying that there is nothing I can do? Everything worked well untill I hit Peak 15 on Novaria.

*Edit* I got to thinking and ran the game in Windows XP (SP3) compatability mode and that fixed it. Thank you all for your help.

I'm having the same problem, and so I tried to run it in Windows XP (SP3) compatibility mode, and it wouldn't run. Or, it wouldn't run right. Set it to run in XP compatibility, set it to run as administrator, and tried running it. And then the computer acted like it was loading, but nothing came up. Not even the launcher. I checked the task manager, and it showed up in the processes, but nothing happened.  When I turn off Windows XP compatibility mode, it will run, but the black pixel problem occurs still.

Processor:AMD E-350
Clock Speed: 1592 MHz
Physical Memory 3.72
Display Adapter AMD Radeon HD 6310
VRAM 256
Driver Version 8.802.2.1000
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Direct X- Version 10.0 or later

I'm running from a disc, not steam or Origin, and it's the value edition.

Your system doesnt meet the hardware requirements to run the game. For single core CPU, minimum 2.4ghz is required. 2gx for multi-core.

Is not meeting the requirements the reason it isn't running in XP compatibility mode too? I mean, I just want to know for future reference, so I don't have to run to the tech support thread if that happens in the future. I've never had to run something in Windows compatibility mode.

Yes. If you dont meet the hardware requirements, it wont matter which mode you run it in, the hardware will still be under spec.
Win7 does have a few features to optimise how the AMD APU and Intel Atom processors work which wouldnt be fully available under XP mode, which is why you get partial functionality from it. Netbooks arent exactly designed for serious gaming, just casual stuff like Sims, Bedazzled etc.

yeah, that's why I have a desktop too. Which I generally play games on, and keep my specs way higher so I don't have to worry too much about required. But my desktop can't come with me places. Oh well, thanks for the help.

Hope the bump isn't a problem, but I'm facing the same error. Does the problem stem from the processor, or from the video card? I'm playing on a Laptop that until Noveria I've been able to play the game with on low texture settings, which is when this problem arose.

The AMD Brazos series of APU isn't intended for gaming.  There is a higher quality APU already available for a slightly more Mainline laptop than the little NetBooks with the Brazos in them, that allows its owners to experience a "budget" version of gaming ("Llano").  Neither the processor nor the integrated type graphics in the (Brazos) systems discussed in this thread are designed for anything as demanding as game playing.

P. S.  All of the owners of AMD systems with the APUs mentioned above will be interested in the newer "Trinity" series from AMD than integrates the next higher level (HD 6670) graphics.  Whether this will bring with it anything related to AMD's "FX" processors is a separate question.

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I'm running into the exact same issue here.  After leaving the mako and entering Peak 15 on Noveria, my whole squad, enemies, and some containers become covered in black pixels.  (To be exact, my squad becomes covered in black pixels just before entering the first door to Peak 15.)   I don't have a picture, but it looks exactly like the screenshots maximillian had links to.  I did notice, however, that the black pixels did not go into menus; if I looked at squad members in the inventory/equipment or level up screens, they looked perfectly fine.  I have both DLC's installed and played them with no issue.  I have no mods installed.  I'm running this on a gaming PC I just built, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I downloaded all recent patches for my games (including Mass Effect), updated drivers for my motherboard, graphics card, mouse and keyboard, and downloaded the latest version of Direct X on 12/7/11.

Game - PC version, Patch 1.02
Vendor - Digital Download from Origin
CPU - AMD FX-8150 Zambezi (3.6 GHz, Eight core)
RAM - 8 GB DDR3
Graphics Card - Radeon HD 6950 (2GB memory size, 256-bit memory interface, GDDR5 memory type)*
Onboard audio - Realtek ALC889 (version 6.0.1.6433)
Operating System - Windows 7, 64-bit, version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Direct X version – DirectX 11.0
HDD space – Local Disk (C:) has 49.5 GB of free space, Local Disk (D:) has 36.8 GB of free space. Mass Effect is located in (D:), the second partition. Both partitions are on the same hard drive.
Power Supply - SeaSonic S12II 620 Bronze 620W

*As for the Driver version for my graphics card, I'm not sure exactly what you guys need (there's 6 versions of things listed in the Vision Control Center) so I'll list everything I could find:
Driver Packaging Version – 8.911-111025a-128243C-ATI
Catalyst Version – 11.11
2D Driver Version – 8.01.01.1207
Direct3D Version – 7.14.10.0873
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.11251
AMD VISION Engine Control Center Version – 2011.1025.2231.38573

If I had to guess what the problem was, I'd say it's my version of Direct X. However, as I'm actually new to PC gaming, I'm inexperienced when it comes to this kind of stuff. I already contacted EA for help, and all they said was to come to these forums. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

These games run on Dx9, which is fully compatible with Dx10 / Dx11. When a full-power GPU acts like an APU's quarter-power included graphics (6310), the first thing to suspect is a corrupted driver, so you uninstall the copy you have now, and install a fresh copy to test that.

If the problem continues, suspect the Dx9 install, and find a newer version of that to install. Re-test. If it's still there, uninstall the game and reinstall it.

I'm having the same issue. I just tried to uninstall and reinstall the game but ended up having to buy the Steam version because I can't find my disks. Still having the same problem with the Steam download. I just upgraded my motherboard, processor, and ram recently. Everything was fine until I hit Novaria. I'm pretty sure I'm not overclocking the system. I've updated all the drivers. Not sure what to do now.

System Info
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
CPU: AMD FX™-4100 Quad-Core 4.51GHz
RAM: 12GB
DirectX Version: 11
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 460
GPU Driver: 290.53

If you need more info let me know.
Any input is appreciated, thanks!

It seems that if you just push through the first part of Noveria (Central Station) everything gets fixed. I'm currently in Flux Station and all I had to do was switch the armor on my squad and then switch them back and it was fixed. But if I go back to Central Station it get messed up again, so hopefully I don't have to go back there.

I'm also having trouble with this. I have tried clearing the shader cache, having steam repair the local files, updating my drivers then restarting, running the game in compatibility mode and as an admin. Nothing. It seems like some mission related shader or texture. The instant I enter peak 15 the glitch happens. If I load an earlier save then the glitch is gone.

Okay, I finally got things working.  I was messing around with my video card drivers and Direct X versions (updating, deleting, fresh installs, more updating, etc...), but I didn't have any luck solving the problem.  However, in my case at least, deltraeus was absolutely correct.  I went past the first area (where you have to activate the VI and fix/repair everything) and after getting to the second areas via the tram I switched the armor on Wrex and he went back to normal (Shepard and Liara were already normal after the loading screen).  I'm not sure what caused that issue, but I haven't encountered it again since.

A million thanks deltraeus!!!  And a big thank you to everyone else who replied  :)

Edit:  Okay, it seems I spoke too soon.  I encountered the exact same glitch on Ilos.  I'll push ahead and see when/if the black pixel characters/enemies go away.  -_-,

Ok, well this glitch affected me until the end of Ilos, but after that it was ok.  It seems it only affects me on the first part of Peak 15 (on Noveria) and the entirety of Ilos.  On my New Game+ I'll try some messing around with some more settings and see if I can figure out what's causing it.  I'll also try some of the suggestions below this post when I get there.

I just got Mass Effect on the Steam sale and sadly I have also encountered these issues, Ive tried everything and Im sad now :(, because none of the prescribed fixes seem to work. Driver updates, DX updates, local cache, gpu drivers, XP compatability, none of those seem to work. I am enjoying this game so much that I continued to play through on Noveria and once I reached the flux area, I saved, then reloaded and the problem went away.

I am now on Illos, just like Castem, and the problem has shown up again. I know that it has to do with the shaders, on Ilos the enemies are not blocks this time, only Shepherd and the squad members.

Here are a couple of screenshots
Noveria
http://cloud.steampo...50D2D0ED0FF8E3/
Ilos
http://cloud.steampo...27B2341845DB4E/

Here are my system specs

AMD FX 6100 6 core @3.3 ghz
8GB DDR3 1333
AMD 5770 1GB
Catalyst 11.12
Win 7 Ultimate SP1

I have everything on my system up to date, Drivers, Bios, OS, so the only thing I could see causing this error is the game engine build/version and the way its handling the shaders. Im going to play a couple more UE3 games to see if there are any similar glitches in other games.
.
This PC build is fairly new and this is the only game that I have encountered issues with on this system. I am familiar with games, as I have worked in Source, Gmotor, UE2, Cryengine, and this looks like a simple shader error, we could probably find a way to debug it if we had access to the debugging console commands, i doubt that they are available, however if anyone knows any available console commands that may help please post.

First 2 things I would try are;
1) Download and install DX9.0c from Microsoft. Steam -should- install it as part of the game, but Steam has a horrible habit of not installing it properly if it detects a newer version.
http://www.microsoft...ls.aspx?id=8109

2) Manually download and install the 1.02 patch for ME1. Again, Steam has a poor track record when it comes to applying this update, and often just updates the ee files, and leaves the other reference libraries unpatched. Link available from teh thread at the top of this forum.

I am having the exact same problem. Started when I entered the door to Peak 15. I have a new computer and bought the steam version. I tried both steps 1 and 2 that you suggested Bogsnot1, to no avail.

"Or go to 'repair' in the configuration utility and click on 'delete local shader cache'."  Maybe this will work.
"Steam doesnt give you access to the ME1 config utility, so you will have
to manually search for a file called masseffectconfig.exe
"

That sucks that all of Ilos will be messed up.  But oh well.

I found that the problem is with the amd fx series processor
my specs:
3.80 gigahertz AMD FX-8120 Eight-Core
8GB DDR3 1600
AMD Radeon HD 6950 2GB
Win 7 Ultimate SP1

And i have the problem on Ilos and Peak 15, but on my other pc which has an Athlon II works just fine at both places, I have also noticed everyone here who also has the problem has an amd fx processor.
