Yep, same problems here with Novaria and Ilos (I have an AMD 4100 FX CPU too). Also noticed odd behaviour with Deus Ex HR, as in crashing and also Duke Nukem Forever. Perhaps there is an issue with the FX processors, but what could it be? Some say shaders, some say the Bios and others say DRM. Yes it's puzzling. Also, thank you to all who gave advice so far in this thread. Doing a quick playthrough of ME2, so far so good, but then again ME2 was always the easier of the two to get to run right.

Another thing that could be causing the problem specific to the FX series processors, is that AMD CPU's are reknowned for having their cores running at slightly different clock speeds, so data synchronisation can get a bit sloppy with them.
Try firing up ME1, alt-tabbing out, set processor affinity to Core 0 only (disable Cores 1, 2, 3), and see how it goes.

That is certainly worth a try Bogsnot1. Also, received an email today from my mobo's manufacturers ASUS. They said they are aware of this problem and their R&D department are going to release a new version of Bios soon that hopefully will fix it. But they have yet to nail down exactly why its happening in the first place. Other mobo makers I guess will come up with similar solutions. Lets hope it does not take too long.

EDIT: Tried setting the game to run on just one core. Appart from increasing load times, it had no other effect. The blacked out textures were still there. Well worth a try though as this little trick worked in the past with getting Thief to run.

EDIT MkII: A new Catalyst driver has just come out. Going to try that next.

EDIT MkIII: No difference with the new Catalyst drivers Posted Image Next thing to hope for is new version of Bios. ME2 is still fine so far, so at least thats something.

Yeah, not much we can do to fix that, as it seems to be an AMD issue with that series of processors. Best advice we can give is to check your PC or motherboard manufactureres website, and wait for a BIOS upgrade to become available to fix the issue.

Ran into this problem last night, found this thread and later I managed to fix this for myself atleast. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64x.

What I did was:
Find your shortcut or .exe to launch the game. Rightclick it and click properties go to Compatibility, change Privilege Level to " Run as Administrator " , after that change Compatibility mode to " Windows XP ( Service Pack 3) ". Launch the game.

This made my problem go away, just make sure your game will always run in " Windows XP ( Service Pack 3 ) " Compatibility mode from now on.

Hope it helps

Tried Skutla's suggestion, but no it made no difference. Was worth a try though! I guess I will keep on waiting for the bios update from ASUS.

@Skutla:

What are your system specs, mobo manufacturer, CPU, graphics and sound cards? This might be useful in trying to nail down this problem if you wouldn't mind posting again?

I have the same issue as many of you here have too. Here's hoping there's some support or directions I can follow as I'd really love to get  ME1 & ME2 completed before my eventual purchase of ME3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Purchased and downloaded my copy off of Steam

- My proccessor is an AMD 4100 Quad Core @ 3.60GHz
- I have 8gb of ram
- Using a Geforce 560 with 2gb / using driver version 290.53
- Running on Windows 7 (Service Pack 1)
- Running DirectX 11

- Evertime I open the door to Peak 15 on the planet Noveria the character models are covered by this black pixelated blob along with other things such as crates and explosive tanks.

It also happens as soon as you land on Ilos. My Computer has a AMD FX 4100 with a GeForce GTX 460. This problme never happened before with my original game copy up until recently. I recently reinstalled ME1 and as soon as i load a save on Ilos or in Noveria, these black shapes with squared edges are instead of Shepard and everyone else. Could the problem be with the CPU ? I also had the BSOD problem for Deus Ex: Human Revolution because of this CPU.

You could try changing the armour of your characters. This sometimes worked for me at certain parts of Noveria but not at all on Ilos.

Any update on this problem?

I went through Novaria with Liara and the Quarian, whatever her name is.     I was a big black blob for almost the whole level, Liara would snap back to normal half the time, and the Quarian eventually did as well.   I was the big black blob until the end.

Really not looking forward to playing Ilos if it has to be like that.

I'm just trying to do a quick run through of ME1 and 2 before ME3 comes out, but this is really taking the fun out of it.

An update. Just got a new version of Bios from ASUS (0901). Although it did fix crashing problems with Deus Ex HR, Duke Nukem Forever and Portal 2. With these it was a memory issue that caused these crashes and that is what they fixed. Mass Effect 1 however, still has this graphics problem.

I would have turned my attention toward the graphics driver if this was only related to ATI cards, but from reading the posts in this thread, some of you are getting this with Nvidia cards too. It must be something to do with the AMD Bulldozer CPUs. Its the only common dominator left. Maybe wait for another bios update?

One thing I did notice though, at Noveria when you enter the complex after your drive along the mountains, if you take the MAKO right up to the door and get out, the door opens and you can send your squad mates into the room beyond, but as soon as you cross that threshold everyone turns into black pixels.

Another update, ASUS have sent me a request about this issue with ME1, so I have let them know about it. My advice to you others out there is to do the same with your motherboard manufacturers. I am (almost) certain this issue is bios related until proven otherwise.

The fact that it seems to happen for everyone precisely at the point of entering Peak 15 on Noveria (and apparently on Ilos) would seem to suggest this is a bug (although at this point one they probably won't fix). I just ran into this issue and my gaming machine is brand-spanking new. I suppose it's a case of the hardware being too far ahead instead of being too far behind, and the game isn't recognizing the configuration (by why only in this area? What's different about Peak 15?)

I haven't seen anyone on this thread mention whether they managed to solve the problem, but if there is a solution other than just pushing through to the next area, please post it!

Skutla said that they managed to fix it, but that method did not work for me. I would still like to know their system specs. Once upon a time this issue happened on Therum too, but I think Bioware patched it, not sure though.
Is anyone experiencing this issue with an OS other than Windows 7?

Just ran into this issue trying to enter Peak 15. I noticed while trying to move into facility some things seemed to jump back to normal(just past turrets at entrance) but it's weird as it only effects certain things. Going to mess around with few things.

AMD FX-4100 @ 4.2ghz
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 (F5 bios)
8gig ram
(2) HD 6770's (12.1 drivers)

This is definitely a GAME problem. As soon as the door opens to Peak 15, my characters go to black blobs. I can even run inside, but before I open the second door (so I can get back outside), I run back into the Mako, pop RIGHT back out, and they're normal again.... until that silly door opens on Peak 15, then they go all black. I suspect some incompatible shader is being called as soon as that door opens.

And there is definitely a THRESHOLD.  If I approach slowly, as soon as I cross that line, I turn black and blobby, but my companions stay normal...until they cross that line, then they turn.  It's an odd one, for sure.:alien:

I noticed the exact same thing. Not sure it's all on the game as my old system did not do this. Current PC is an all new build.

Tried installing the 1.02 patch.  Did not help
Tried installing DX9(june 2010) Did not help
Tried messing with vid card setting. Did not help
Tried using the "ghost" command in console to walk thru garage door. Trying to see if it was something to do with that door opening. Did not help

That was a good try Kelwing!  Another question for you all. Are you seeing this problem with a fresh install of the game? I ask because I re-installed my Steam copy from my old Intel dual core based PC backup hard drive. It worked (mostly) fine on that old setup with none of these graphics glitches.

I will add my specs in here and I am having the exact same issue, you enter the Mako and exit back to normal. Walk near the door, turn to black.

CPU: AMD FX-6100
MB: GA-990FXA-UD5
RAM: 16gb Corsair 1600
GPU: AMD Radeon 6790 1gb
