It is strange because i played ME1 for like 5 times before never having any problems. But i upgraded my MB and CPU not long ago. Everything else of my hardware is the same even the OS is the same, Win7 64. So must be MB/CPU related.
I have all my crew, enemies and some objects turn black the moment i enter peak 15.

PS3 owners didn't even had a chance to play this game, all they got on ME 2 was a 15 minutes comic where they have to make the important choices of ME. Bug or not, at least got the full experience.

Specs:
AMD FX-6100 Six-Core Processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
6 gigs of ram
directx 10
Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
My graphics card and all drivers are up to date and so is directx 10.
I've tried every single fix in this thread and none of them have worked. The game is unplayable at this point, because I'm on insanity and I can't even tell what's an object and what's an enemy, since they're all just black blobs. Can anyone else help?

Have tried all of the Therum fixes with zero impact.

AMD FX-4100
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
16 GB RAM
Win 7 Ultimate x64
DirectX 11
In addition to trying the suggestions here and the Therum fixes, I went tweaking numbers in the BIOEngine.ini to see if I could force it to load different maps. It's sort of stabbing in the dark since I've no concrete idea how the textures are called or what the source of the bug is, but I wanted to be thorough. It didn't help either.

AMD FX is my processors series like many of you and the game is on Steam.
Its perfectly playable and only lasts pretty much until you hit a loading screen, where you can then change armour causing the character to come back (results may vary), I've had times when Tali was back but not Garrus and vice versa. Once you go back outside on Peak 15 the bug will appear again on all character until the next loading screen, pretty much unavoideable.
Ilos is damn close to annoying though as it persists throughout the entire level.
Sorry if theres anything I missed / spoiler rules I should adhear to.

Regarding the characters reverting back to the bugged states, elevators definitely seem to play a part in activating the bug again as if you just play though without bothering to fix the bug, on a few elevators one or two of your characters will appear suddenly - as will weapons.
If your characters carry their blacked out bug through the level transition (I think mine did at least once) switching armour will fix it and you shouldn't have the problem from then on in Peak 15.

I've tried all of the suggested fixes:
- Processor affinity
- Different gfx card
- BIOS updates, chipset driver updates
- Different in-game gfx settings
- etc
It appears to be affected by newer AMD CPUs. My setup:
- AMD FX-8120
- AMD 760G Chipset
- Radeon HD 6870
- W7 x64
- Game was purchased from Origin. Game version is 1.02
So my question to Bioshock is, where do we go from here? I expect we will be hearing from more AMD FX users in the coming months. Since the Mass Effect story is so awesome, many new users will want to experience the entire trilogy. A cohesive trilogy, free of crippling bugs would really make ME stand above the rest!!
Issue is also being discussed here: http://forums.steamp....php?p=29525479

I have the same issue as many of you here have too. Here's hoping there's some support or directions I can follow as I'd really love to get ME1 & ME2 completed before my eventual purchase of ME3.

Any update on this problem?
I went through Novaria with Liara and the Quarian, whatever her name is. I was a big black blob for almost the whole level, Liara would snap back to normal half the time, and the Quarian eventually did as well. I was the big black blob until the end.
Really not looking forward to playing Ilos if it has to be like that.
I'm just trying to do a quick run through of ME1 and 2 before ME3 comes out, but this is really taking the fun out of it.

Are we expecting a fix for this?
Certainly not from Bioware / EA. The game is three years old now, It's two years past any likelihood of further patches.

AMD E-450
Your situation differs from all of the recent members' problem. The Brazos, as has been made very clear, is well below minimum, both the processor and the video solution. The more recent comments are from members whose hardware is quantitatively miles beyond a Brazos APU.
Crysity wrote...
Does anyone know if this continues on in mass effect 2 and 3 and what kind of laptop I need because i can still return this laptop
You need a "Trinity" series APU if you want to have an APU, but those (I believe) are Bulldozer processors, unlike the Brazos and Llano APUs. There is some potential of an update to the motherboard firmware / Setup for Bulldozer CPU machines, but laptops make generally poor game systems, and the miniature laptops such as those with Brazos APU included are barely good enough for 2D gaming.
A real graphics card needs to be equivalent to an HD 4670 and upward, from AMD.
