Certainly not from Bioware / EA. The game is three years old now, two years past any likelihood of further patches.

After playing ME3 i thought i wanted to go for a complete run on all 3 games and i reached noveria just a moment ago and i get the same problem....
It is strange because i played ME1 for like 5 times before never having any problems. But i upgraded my MB and CPU not long ago. Everything else of my hardware is the same even the OS is the same, Win7 64. So must be MB/CPU related.
I have all my crew, enemies and some objects turn black the moment i enter peak 15.

Same happened to me, I just finished Ilos. I was very upset with this bug, then I realized:
PS3 owners didn't even had a chance to play this game, all they got on ME 2 was a 15 minutes comic where they have to make the important choices of ME. Bug or not, at least got the full experience.

Just gonna go ahead and throw my name into this thread as I'm having the exact same problem. Here's my specs:

AMD FX-4100 Quad Core 3.6
8 gigs mem
Windows 7 Home Premium 64
AMD Radeon HD 6670

And this is my first time playing ME too. Uncool....

Same problem here. Right when the door to Peak 15 opens on Noveria, everyone and just about everything turns into a black blob. Except with mine, Shepard and his teammates are just gigantic black blobs. Not even shaped like the character. And most objects and every enemy are like this as well.

Specs:

AMD FX™-6100 Six-Core Processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
6 gigs of ram
directx 10
Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

My graphics card and all drivers are up to date and so is directx 10.

I've tried every single fix in this thread and none of them have worked. The game is unplayable at this point, because I'm on insanity and I can't even tell what's an object and what's an enemy, since they're all just black blobs. Can anyone else help?

Yep same problem here. Pretty obviously an issue with the Bulldozer at this point, the game worked fine (okay so I got black landscapes every time it got hot, but that could be fixed with a save+restart) on my old CPU, and AMD Phenom II x2 550BE Unlocked, but after upgrading my system I get the exact error that you all describe. Current setup:
AMD FX6100
HD6790
8 GB DDR3 Ram
Windows 7 Pro x64
DirectX 11.

Have tried all of the Therum fixes with zero impact.

I'll throw my hat in the ring here as well. This is driving me a little crazy, this is my first playthrough and it's making Noveria a bit difficult.

AMD FX-4100
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
16 GB RAM
Win 7 Ultimate x64
DirectX 11

In addition to trying the suggestions here and the Therum fixes, I went tweaking numbers in the BIOEngine.ini to see if I could force it to load different maps. It's sort of stabbing in the dark since I've no concrete idea how the textures are called or what the source of the bug is, but I wanted to be thorough. It didn't help either.

Crap. Same here.

Peak 15 is when it all started. Exactly like everyone else... as soon as the area starts.

I Made a video showing the bug about a week or two ago, Pretty much the same boat as everyone else in here, First seen on Peak 15 then again later into the game in a much more annoying way.

AMD FX is my processors series like many of you and the game is on Steam.

Its perfectly playable and only lasts pretty much until you hit a loading screen, where you can then change armour causing the character to come back (results may vary), I've had times when Tali was back but not Garrus and vice versa. Once you go back outside on Peak 15 the bug will appear again on all character until the next loading screen, pretty much unavoideable.

Ilos is damn close to annoying though as it persists throughout the entire level.

Sorry if theres anything I missed / spoiler rules I should adhear to.

Ok I noticed when I got in an elevator at peak 15 Kaiden turned back to normal so I changed my armor and I turned back to normal. As soon as I got off the elevator my squad and I turned back into black pixels along with the enemies and objects.

The enemies and dynamic objects will stay blacked out until it loads the next part of the map, Not the quick load where you freeze entering an area with LOADING... on the screen but a full load with a black screen, for example [minor spoiler, barely even one to be fair] the tram system to get deeper into the base.

Regarding the characters reverting back to the bugged states, elevators definitely seem to play a part in activating the bug again as if you just play though without bothering to fix the bug, on a few elevators one or two of your characters will appear suddenly - as will weapons.

If your characters carry their blacked out bug through the level transition (I think mine did at least once) switching armour will fix it and you shouldn't have the problem from then on in Peak 15.

I am new to the Mass Effect trilogy, so logically, I purchased ME1 first. Unfortunately, like the rest of you, I ran into this bug. This bug is easily reproducible; it occurs right as you are entering Peak 15. I can run back outside, get into Mako, exit Mako, and the glitch goes away. But if I enter Peak 15, the glitch comes back.

I've tried all of the suggested fixes:
- Processor affinity
- Different gfx card
- BIOS updates, chipset driver updates
- Different in-game gfx settings
- etc

It appears to be affected by newer AMD CPUs. My setup:

- AMD FX-8120
- AMD 760G Chipset
- Radeon HD 6870
- W7 x64
- Game was purchased from Origin. Game version is 1.02

So my question to Bioshock is, where do we go from here? I expect we will be hearing from more AMD FX users in the coming months. Since the Mass Effect story is so awesome, many new users will want to experience the entire trilogy. A cohesive trilogy, free of crippling bugs would really make ME stand above the rest!!

Issue is also being discussed here: http://forums.steamp....php?p=29525479

Mass Effect 2 and 3 were ok for me. Only ME1 shows this odd behaviour.

Any update on this problem?

I went through Novaria with Liara and the Quarian, whatever her name is.     I was a big black blob for almost the whole level, Liara would snap back to normal half the time, and the Quarian eventually did as well.   I was the big black blob until the end.

Really not looking forward to playing Ilos if it has to be like that.

I'm just trying to do a quick run through of ME1 and 2 before ME3 comes out, but this is really taking the fun out of it.

Your situation differs from all of the recent members' problem.  The Brazos, as has been made very clear, is well below minimum, both the processor and the video solution.  The more recent comments are from members whose hardware is quantitatively miles beyond a Brazos APU.

You need a "Trinity" series APU if you want to have an APU, but those (I believe) are Bulldozer processors, unlike the Brazos and Llano APUs.  There is some potential of an update to the motherboard firmware / Setup for Bulldozer CPU machines, but laptops make generally poor game systems, and the miniature laptops such as those with Brazos APU included are barely good enough for 2D gaming.

A real graphics card needs to be equivalent to an HD 4670 and upward, from AMD.

Just to add my voice to Gorath Alpha 's its my belief that all us Bulldozer owners need a bios update. Recently ASUS brought out a new one last February for my mobo and suddenly Deus EX HR and Duke Nukem Forever worked perfectly. Before, both the games would crash to a blue screen. Its my hope another update will restore ME1 to fully working condition. In the meantime I suggest you all contact your respective mother board manufacturers. If enough of us do so, it can bring results, you scream, I scream, we all scream! :D

So I'm having a similar problem but right after install. The game launches and I can create a character but when I accept it only loads Shepard black silhouette all the menus dont have any content or objectives. I can shoot into what appears to be open space (reddish hue) but cannot walk and have nothing to interact with. This is second install and I bought off of Impulse. I'm lost and really want to dive into this game

You need to stay in touch with Asus, who in their own turn will be staying in touch with AMD.

The asus m5a97 did just get a recent bios update (to 1102) -- I'll give it a shot in a bit and see if it's helpful.

I don't think most motherboard makers will be fixing this bug, let alone doing anything about it. Yes, a 2008 game should be support but given how things are, I'd wait until the next gen (Piledriver) CPU to see if that's been fixed.

And yes, I too have those problems. Ilos was totally annoying as I kept falling through maps!
