Do yourself a favour and get the Razer Onza TE controler www.razerzone.com/minisite/onza. I just got mine yesterday and it is everything I hoped for and more. The most important feature for me are the two extra assignable bumpers, on wich you can assign pretty much every button on the controler. So that means you can now assign a melee button on one of your shoulder bumpers, wich means you can use the Claymore reload trick and aim freely at the same time. Or just have the option to melee and turn around at the same time with other classes. I did a little test run with my Claymore Vanguard, and while it took a little to get used to, it is so much better then the regular controler. The fact that you can aim while using reload trick means no more whiffed shots just because someone started moving and you couldn't aim/reload in time. I mean I was pretty consistent with the reload trick on the regular controler, but there where times when you just couldn't shoot a moving target no matter how hard you tried. So yeah, if you want to improve your Claymore experience, get your Onza NAO.  :P
The other features worth mentioning are the illuminated hyper responsive face buttons (a, b, x, y), wich make a nice clicky sound when you press them and are in fact hyper responsive as the name sugests. No need to mash them in, all they need is a gentle push. They kinda feel like mouse clicks. And TE's also come with a regulator for you analog sticks, with wich you can loosen or tighten your analog sticks to whatever you prefer. And the D-pad is actually 4 separate buttons now and it feels much more precise and overall way better than the horrible Microsoft one. The only con for me is that it doesn't have wireless conectivity (I really like wireless), but it does come with a long high-quality braided cable. Anywayz, that about sums up my initial impressions.
I would recomend this controler to any serious console gamer, becuase well, the official one is **** and there are no good alternatives out there, except for Razer Onza. Like I said, do yourself a favour and get one ASAP. It is a high-quality product that was designed by gamers for gamers, and imo it's well worth the price (wich is surprsingly not that high anyway).

Interesting.  And with a d-pad like that I could actually consider playing fighting games again.

I think you would be better off with one of these for fighting games www.madcatz.com/productinfo.asp . Or even better, get an arcade stick. That's what I use anyway. I don't think I could ever go back to using a pad for fighting games.
But if you prefer the pad, I wouldn't recommend the Razer for fighting games. While it's d-pad is way better than the official xbox one, I don't think it would work out  well for fighters. Mainly because it doesn't have that fluid response when you run your finger through different directions (like forward, back, half-circle forward for instance). I think it was designed more for those one direction precise inputs. Like selecting a command on the left without accidently pressing up.
People mainly use playstation pads for fighting games, since they have the one of the best d-pads in the business, or those madcats fightpads that were designed mainly for StreetFighter (big fluid one-piece d-pad and 6 face buttons).
I would personally recommend an arcade stick (from years of personal experience), but if we are down to pads, the PS3 and Madcatz fightpads are a pretty good choice also. Just stay away from the 360 pad though.

I obviously prefer the Nintendo's Cross, it is simply the simplest and best D-Pad outside... but this one sounds kind of interresting.

Sadly I don't need to assign MELEE anywhere else, I just need more than the 3 standard buttons for skills.

Agreed. This was a major screw up on BioWare's part. Especially considering that the two anlalog stick click buttons were used for a completely useless and/or unnecessary function (the radar waypoint). They could easily have made those two buttons assignable for powers. Or if they actually put in some thought in to the control scheme, you could have all 4 face buttons assignable for powers, and have melee, reload and sprint on bumpers and analog sticks.
I think there was a huge and popular thread about this like a year ago or so. Some guy really put in a lot of thought into the control scheme and wrote some extensive ideas and solutions on how to optimize it. I really hope the devs are considering this also. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to open a new thread about it and post some suggestions. Just to remind them, you know?

i completely agree with more controller mappabilty. make it exactly like fallout3s control layout and allow me to choose what button does what. for example i never use melee so the B button is a wasted button. if i could map another ability, thatd be ****ing awesome! and yes it deserves a swear word because its not just awesome. itd be the best possible thing to happen to my mass effecting. especially with global cooldowns, and less pausing to pick abilities.

i somewhat dont like abilities mapped to the buttons, id rather have the Dpad for abilities so i can use my right thumb for looking and my left thumb for flinging my biotics. i just dont care about assiging my squad to buttons. i let em roam free, like free range kitties.

It would be insanely cool if you could map abilities to your dpad or whatever you want.

I have also been wondering about buying a new controller for my xbox. Mainly I'm not happy with the default dpad. I wouldn't mind one like the one in the OP, but I'm not completely convinced yet.

Yep, it would be indeed cool, if we could customize our controler whatever way we wanted. There's prolly a ton of different ways on how to optimize it. I really, really hope the ME3 dev team puts some more thought into this then they did for ME2. The ME2 config felt like a complete waste of a control scheme sometimes. It was as generic as it gets, and two buttons were basically unused. Such a shame.

And about the controlers. Microsoft recently released a new version of it's official controler with an improved d-pad. The good thing is that it's wireless, and the not so good thing is that the d-pad is still not that great, although it is a nice improvement over the previous one.  They also changed the colour scheme on the face buttons, but basically it's the same old Microsoft pad we all know.
I mainly opted for Razer because of the two extra assignable bumpers and a better, more precise d-pad. Everything else was just icing on the cake.

Finally, you and I agree on something! Yep, it sucks to have only 3 powers on the controller. Also I'd presonally would make the left and right thumbstick clicks as squad positioning and make the d-pad fully customizable. Really can't stand it when I see Thane strolling right under the Praetorian's butt so it will sit on his face when I originaly wanted him to use his Warp.
