The Asbestos Thread- Rating the Romances

Fenris. I played as a mage and fell easily into the rivalmance. I liked the intensity and passion of the voice actor. Let's be blunt: That voice could move mountains. I thought it flowed well, and given the complexity of the relationship and how conflicted Fenris would be, the gaps actually made sense. I very much liked this romance.
Anders. I played as a warrior. I understand why some people like the Andersmance, but I'm not one of them. Some of the choices I had to make to sustain it felt false. I romanced him as a friend, which may have been my mistake. Here the gaps made no sense, in my opinion. For what ever reason, I never really felt much.
Merrill. I actually romanced her twice, once as a friend and once as a rival. It's hard romancing Merrill as a rival as she is cuter than a litter of puppies, but it also plays better. I felt much better about myself, her and the romance as a rival than as a friend. Her rivalmance came across as very natural. I didn't feel as though I was being hateful, but as concerned and she read it that way.
Isabela. I romanced her as a friend and she proved to be a very good friend. She's hard to get through to, but once you do, it's very satisfying. There was a bit of choppiness in some of the dialogues that I thought could have been better fleshed out (why is it whenever I write or read about Isabela I keep hearing sexual innuendoes in everything?), but on the whole I thought it flowed well.
Sebastian. This is a hard one to complete. It was not satisfying at all. I get where he is coming from, but I am well aware of the story of Abelard and Heloise and while it's great to read about it isn't pleasant to live through or even re-enact. This is the one I had to work the hardest at and it offers the least reward.
I'd rank them as follows: Isabela, Merrill and Fenris all rate about the same with me. I loved all of them. Anders and Sebastian both failed, Anders because I could never feel I was being true to any character I'd play and Sebastian because, just because.
Flame away!

I thought about editing to reflect that I meant I haven't romanced Isabela yet, but I like that I elicited a reply from you more.

Probably because I'm rather outspoken in my unfettered desire for pirate cupcakes.

You said a lot that accords with what I thought. This I can underline in particular, though I'd have to add Merrill to it.mousestalker wrote...

But, I'm mostly going on impressions and videos. I got halfway through Anders' romance and abandoned the character. If I ever get around to playing a male PC, I'd do Isabela (hurr hurr). Hers seems sweet with enough ups and downs for interest. (egad, there's that innuendo you were talking about)
So really, there's only Fenris. In fact I like Fenris more than Hawke and think he should probably ditch her. He and Varric pretty much are DA2 for me.

2. Fenris' Rivalrymance - Bittersweet, can be manipulative (if you play it that way), lots of anger, sexy kisses. Yet at the end understanding.Fenris' confession of "Everything I've done, I've done to myself." is what makes this stand above the friendship mance in my eyes.
3. Fenris' Friendshipmance - A meeting of two equals who help each other the best they can, watching Fenris have someone he can count on that won't judge him. It was sweeter than the rivalrymance yet at the end I didn't feel as though Fenris had stopped blaming magic like he had in the rivalrymance.
4. Merrill's Rivalrymance - It is a bit like a domineering figure telling her what do. But it is with the goal of protecting her. So I can't find much fault in it.
5. Anders' Friendshipmance - Very sweet...almost too sweet and it's a bit disturbing to me. I feel like an enabler and while he listens somewhat to Hawke's warnings about Vengeance he takes it more seriously on the rivalry path.
I haven't done any of the other romances. I tried Isabela's but it bored me and Merrill's friendship...I just can't get behind her trying to fix the mirror.

And once more I can do nothing but to agree with you. You are doing this on purpose, aren't you?

Fenris friendmance > Anders rivalmance with ManHawke > Fenris rivalmance > Anders rivalmance with FemHawke
I just can't picture romancing Isabela for some reason. I adore her as a buddy/big sister, but romance? Not really. And I don't even know why. Fenris' rivalmance is just too damned touchy for me, TBH. There's just too much unresolved anger and hate from both parties. It feels more like a hatesexing than a healthy relationship. And yet, I adored the rivalmance with Anders and ManHawke for some reason-- maybe because the cheesy lines from both characters delivered in male voices had me rolling on the floor. Fenris' friendmance, though, is wonderful. Fenris is there for Hawke when Hawke hurts, and vice versa. Despite Fenris' issues, the romance strikes me ultimately as of one of equals.

My canon Hawke is going to be single, celibate, and not in the marriage-in-the-chantry way. I love them all, but they are all way too crazy/

i don't know how i feel about anderps rivalry so conflicted
Anders is my favorite because I am a **** for tragedy porn, Isabela comes in at a distant-but-full-of-love second because she is a bro, Merrill is adorbs but not my type, Fenris has the greatest dick joke ever written but otherwise kinda bores me, I can't help but think Isabela could do better than the boring!Hawke you have to play to rival her, Merrill's friendship is too enably, and Fenris's friendship is his rivalry minus the tension. lolsebastian.

My first PT I did friendmance Merrill, she was sweet, not totally moving but good. I ADORED the Fenris romance as Addai67 said, its totally the best imo. I could not get thru the ANders romance... I also abandoned the game,... and sorry but I cant stand Isabela's character [ cliched to the max for me] so.... thats my game. Fen all the way

I plan on getting around to both of Fenris' on my mages eventually, but only after I can swallow my bile (assuming I'm even still interested enough to play the game at that point). Although friendship romance with the self-hating mage 'ought to provide some good moments. Anders is in the same boat as Fenris - frankly I rather despise both of them.
Seriously, **** Fenris. And **** Anders.
EDIT: Also, I realize this thread is for DA2 romances...but Morrigan > everything else. True story.

Isabela/Merrill/Sebastian = not touching those romances with a ten foot pole
Not motivated to romance Anders at the moment, maybe in a later play through.
Overall? Ehhhh....

Did the rivalmance with Fenris. Didn't understand why he still slept with Hawke after he enslaved Orana right in front of him. Also didn't understand why he and Hawke didn't talk about their lovin's for three years, didn't talk about what exactly Fenris remembered when he finally came back, and didn't talk about why it took him so damn long to come back.
Overall? Ehhhh....
I love Fenris' romance. But I'm the first to say that those three years make no sense at all. Three years is a really REALLY long time. I think it's a weakness of the framed narriative, not of the romance itself. I think it would have worked better had the reconciliation happened before the time skip, but the commitment didn't happen until after. Then you see a maturing romance. But I'm not the writers (I just have my own little head canon).
The slave? While he doesn't approve of slavery, Orana would not be able to survive on her own. Give her money and he says something about how she will be robbed by the end of the day. I do understand why it's not a dealbreaker for him -- at least she will be cared for, though it's far better if you hire her rather than take her on as a slave. She has no concept of freedom.
Anyway, my order is as follows:
Fenris rival > Fenris friend > haven't done Isabela or Merrill but they'd probably be about here > Sebastian > Anders friendship
Anders creeps me out. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be sleazy and manipulative ("I love you baby. For years, I've loved you! Oh, I'm so glad you feel the same. Ummm, I kinda need a place to stay. Can I move in with you?") or crazy and obsessive. Probably both. It struck all sorts of wrong chords with me.

Considering how much of a jackhole my Rivalmance Hawke was, Orana would not be very well cared for living with him. He'd probably have her sleeping outside with Dog...
And if you give Orana money and let her go off on her own... she does pretty well considering...
It just kills me that you can treat Fenris and everyone around "you"
like utter crap and Fenris still falls for you/sleeps with you. Made no
sense to me... at all. The Rivalmances should have had more "crisis points" IMO.
