I've romanced Merrill (friend) and Isabela (friend) right the way through and liked them both for different reasons. If I had to choose my favourite out of the two I'd probably say Merrill but I think I'm being biased because I'm welsh.
My current Hawke slept with everyone because I wanted to get an idea of what their romances are like. Fenris (friend) was fun and he kind of reminded me of Isabela when he tried to bail right after (didn't feel guilty telling him it was just for fun). While Anders (Rival) made me cringe, does he need to be so dramatic? I dunno how Hawke didn't laugh in his face when he said "I don't know if I want to kiss you or kill you". Dumping him was hilarious, Hawke didn't even let him down gently. Considering Hawke had already been with Fenris and Isabela he should have known better. Trying the rivalmance with Merrill now but I think I like the friendship better, I could have cried when Merrill called Hawke a shem.

1.Fenris--have only rivalmanced him. Him and my mage/mage sympathizer Hawke should totally hate each other but he's just sooo... alluring. Fenris will never stop hating mages or trying to screw them over. I know this...but I keep coming back! Him even grudgingly siding with the mages doesn't make much sense to me, though. His decision at the end there could have used a little more exposition.
Fenris siding with Hawke at the end with the mages makes perfect sense. This is the person he loves and will stand with, even though he thinks that Hawke is making a mistake. He does NOT side with the mages, he fights by Hawke's side. He says it best just before fighting the final battle, "Promise me you won't die, Hawke. I cannot bear the thought of living without you."
He's not about to leave Hawke, no matter what; if he can fight with Hawke, he will. It's not about the mages. It's about him being in love.
Ah, I see. This makes sense. Don't know why I didn't think of it this way. Thanks

1. Anders - Cheese, angst, fluff, mages, manifestos, betrayal... everything is here. Rival or friend I don't care, Anders is my favoritest.
2. Isabela - Friend - I just like this one. Isabela is a surprisingly endearing character. I thought I wouldn't like her, but I do.
3. Anyone else. Honestly Anders and Izzy are the only ones I can do.
4. Sebastian - He doesn't count under "anyone else". I did his as a friend and hated it. I can't stand Seb. He does have the MAKER NOOOOOO! going for him though

At this point I've only romanced Fenris and Anders. I can't romance the females. I'm a girl and I always play girls, so it feels awkward for me. I may start another playthrough so I can see the other romances.
Anders > Fenris. (Both as Friends) I love them both, but I hate templars as much as Anders, so I just connect with him, I guess. Apparently brooding is hot.
