I rarely saw anyone getting the answer they need on this forum, but I felt frustrated and had nowhere to turn to.

Two hours ago, I completed the entire game, and finished every single DLCs out there.

It was a grand experience. I loved it so much. Oh the thrill, oh the suspense, oh the epicness.

When the Collector base blew up as SR2 Normandy went into FTL, my spine shivered.

So, now I wanted to play the game again with my Level 30 Shepard, and play on harder difficulty.

Guess what.

As I imported my character and started another new game, everything went fine and smooth as it has been for past 50+ hours of gameplay.

But, when Normandy blew up and Shepard was being resurrected, the character creation menu pops up and then-

CTD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bewildered, I tried the game over and over again. Same things happened. I was never able to get past the Lazarus project.

Funny thing is, when I load other save files, it works fine. I just can't start the game from the beginning.

Can any one explain why or how this is happening and what should I do?

Oh, and my game is the EA store purchased version.

I don't think I need to put on my PC spec since I have been playing (as I said, I beat the game!) mighty fine with all the settings set to 'high', but still, since its this forum's 'rule', I will specify.

Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     T7500  @ 2.20GHz
Physical Memory: 2.99GB
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS 256MB Driver Version 270.61 (Updated APRIL 2011)
Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium K

I cant give you any answers for PC but there is a similar bug for xbox version as well. With xbox, it's triggered when you complete the game and then select continue after the credits. Then when you immediately try and start a new game, it goes as far as it does for you and crashes at the lazarus project screen. My particular copy also has another crash bug during the Thane recruitment mission. Basically it occurs when you talk to the asari to start the mission and then during the loading screen, it crashes every time. (And I have a brand new xbox) However, that one has a work around where if press my xbox button and bring up the dashboard during the loading screen, it bypasses the crash entirely.

Have you tried playing a new game through to character creation with a newly-created Shepard, or just with the ME2 import?

If it does affect any new game you try to start, it sounds like a corrupted install.

@Aradace// That is a very peculiar bug indeed!
@Kloreep// I just checked and found this is not just a problem with ME2 import. But, how could the installation be corrupted when I never un-installed the game in the first place?

A good question. I'm afraid I don't have an answer, but I do suggest a re-install to fix the problem. =]

disk defragmentation
virus protections
or anything that involves any real movement with your harddrive or possible powerloss during use.

Surely you cant be aiming the "disk defrag" in my direction lol.  Especially since A.) Im on Xbox and B.) It even did it on my old xbox.  Only reason I was even here was because the title of the thread interested me because I thought it might have been like the similar crash I was experiencing as well.  To which, it actually kind of was but just triggered under different circumstances.

If not,  then apologies lol.  As I said though for my case, I have a work around for it and it works out just fine.  And with ME3 right around the corner, it doesnt really bother me that much seeing as how once I finish up all my Sentinel data, I'll be done with ME2.

The more I think about it, the more Im convinced that you probably werent referring that to me.  So dont mind me, Im a rambling nutter sometimes :P

Nope aimed at Lunaluxlepus who was asking how a game could get corrupted when never un-installed. There are a bunch of things that will "move"data around like a defrag or cause it to be damaged, like a drive "needle" skipping over a sector during power issues. I am not saying this IS what happened but what COULD have happened. Sometimes when being read a power fluctuation will cause issues or even dust/debris/randomghost****, will cause issues.

The only other thing I can think of, providing you have already tried a reinstall, is your graphics chipset is causing the issue. Not only are you running the game on a laptop with a small amount of VRAM, you are also running it with one of the latest graphics drivers, which are known to cause problems with older games such as ME2.
There is no such thing as a standard when it comes to Mobility chipsets, and each laptop manufacturer has different ideas on how to integrate the chipset onto their mainboards, with varying degrees of functionality. Also, being stuck within a case with very limited airflow, gives these chipsets a greater chance of overheatings, and thus glitching.

The character creation screen in ME2 is a very busy screen, with wiremesh displays, scan lines, monitor readouts, constant changes to the background and the like. I would dare say it is the high demand on your graphics which is now causing the CTD. It may have worked fine when you first got and played the game, but the demand from playing the game, and subsequant heat from both CPU and GPU, could have frazzled something in the hardware. Hopefully not.

If you havent tried a reinstall, do that first. You dont have to uninstall the game for it to become corrupted. As mcsupersport pointed out, there are numerous reasons why it can become glitched, ranging from defrag, AV, power fluctuations, or even just Windows being its dodgy old self and screwing up everything for no reason.
Also, try rolling your video drivers back to a revision that was released around June last year, as they are the last known stable revisions with ME2.
If none of these work, I would say your hardware has been pushed to its limits, and is starting to fail.
