I'm thinking of starting a solo mage nightmare playthrough sometime later.

This is something I have NEVER done before and it surprises me that it CAN be done. I'm thinking of doing this after I finish my current playthrough and are done with all of the other content--the ones where I, the Warden, are in at least. Although, I am considering of bring one ally. Not because I need the help (which I more than likely do), but I like to fight along side an ally. :)

Any advice for this before I get started? What spells I should focus on first? What places should I go to first?

I'm also worried about the random wolf pack encounter, that place always gets me. -_-"

I am also uncertain which forum this one belongs to. >_>

Arcane Warrior or a Rogue (a Strength-based Rogue, especially) are great solo characters. Bring along Dog and/or make your Rogue a Ranger if you want a buddy. (A Ranger can summon 2 pets at once, if you're feeling especially lonely.) Never go into an encounter without poisons. Never tackle a mob of wolves without traps. If you can Stealth, do so at every opportunity and get your Warden's Keep passive ability ASAP.

I "cheat" by letting Morrigan & Wynne hang out at the map edge, sustaining "Haste" and "<fill in the blank> Weapons," and Leliana sustaining "Song of Courage." That shortens combat and travel time by quite a bit. A double dose of Haste makes everything better.

I like heal+rock armor at level 1. Then go for spells like the glyphs, arcane shield, miasma and etc. Be sure to pick up arcane warrior at lv 7 and all of those talents once they're available. Mana clash is also handy to keep mages from using dispel on you, though there's not much that can be done against templars and their cleanse area.

With rock armor, arcane shield, shimmering shield, miasma and combat magic, your arcane warrior will be quite durable. I think that my mage had around 60-65 armor and 120 defense by the end of the game. With shimmering shield, magic spells don't do much either. My warden was wearing the Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate set (the mana regen is nice). He also dual wielded Duncan's Sword (+4 mana regen) and The Rose's Thorn, so melee offense never an issue. The only thing he couldn't do was pick locks.
