Characters - 10
10 doesn't mean perfect as that's unattainable.  It just means top tier.  I can't really complain Varric, Merrill, Isabela, Aveline and the Arishok.  They could end up being the best characters in a game this year.

Plot - 9
Fewer decisions to make than Origins makes this a worse overall story. Though I do admire the decision to avoid conventions of heroic fantasy and to not have Conor-style ways out of situations.  Still I feel that when doing a character-based story, the conflict is more compelling when it's tied to a character's psychology as opposed to external events just getting in his way.  That sounds like a lot of criticism for a nine.  But I feel there's enough merit in DA2 that it's worth criticizing.  There's still a lot more there than I get out of most games.  It's a 9 by comparison.

Gameplay - 7
7 is probably being too generious.  Here's the thing.  The mechanics are a 9.  The encounter design is a 5. So that averages out to 7.  But it feels worse at times because the encounter design really stands out and mars an otherwise good game.  By encounter design I mean "another wave".  They really need to mix it up and have some smarter enemies next time.

26/3 = 8.67

DA:O 7-7.5, repeative as hell, clumsy interface, feels like a choir to play in parts. I haven't did but three runs on it and two of those I pratically had to force myself to do.

DA:2 could use more improvements but I enjoyed most of the changes, such as some events happening reguardless of what you do. I like this as it gets rid of alot of the god factor of the traditional PC, and showed you were mortal and no matter what you do there will be events you can't change, a refreashing change from "It'll all be alright you run the world."

I felt the combat interface was much more improved, and loved the art style minus in terms of the darkspawn. Though the way enemies popped up was funny, however its better than WOOOO RANDOM ENCOUNTER that makes up the bulk of RPG games. So I give DA:2 an 8 out of 10.

DA:O Just bored the **** out of me and wasn't that fantastic, then again I never liked D&D style games.

DA:O: 7 it was good first time through when experiencing the story. But combat wasn't great and it got boring on subsequent playthroughs.

DA2: 8 had some serious flaws no doubt but overall I enjoyed it and quite liked the story.

I could see it going up to 8, but you have to give me a year or so to really evaluate it. Sorry!

I'd gave DA:O a 10/10. It was honestly the best gaming experience I've ever had, to the point where I teared up the first time I ever beat it. (Is that weird? Meh.) I can find a few small flaws, but nothing that truly takes away from the gameplay.

I'd give DA2 a 8/10. If I'd never played DA:O, it might have recieved a 9 or even a 10, but the comparison makes it lose points. The only thing I really have an issue with is the plot. I just find it rather boring and badly put together, and overall I didn't really care how it worked out in the end. It had nothing on the DA:O plot, which was pretty epic: having to gather allies to fight a massive Darkspawn army. The DA2 plot is largely politics, which is nowhere near as interesting.

However, it had far more good points than bad:

- Varric is seriously the best character from anything ever.
- I never thought I could have a bigger crush on a video game character than the one I had on Alistair, until I met Anders. <3
- There was far more side quests than main plot, which is my favorite formula for a RPG.
- DA:O was set up as basically a bunch of seperate locations, which you rarely had to travel between during a main plot quest. The main plot in DA2 was more spread out across the map.
- There were so many little happy moments when a recurring character from DA:O appeared, even if only for a few minutes.

Gah, I'm sorry for rambling. Long story short, I love both, but DA:O will always be my favorite game ever.

DA:O - 7 - Never pulled me in. Struggled to finish a single play through*. Found it okay overall.

DA2 - 7 Ending was a bit "WTF! That's it?" But I am halfway through my second playthrough, enjoying it a bit more then DA:O. Does lose points for bugs and the ending though. If the ending was better it would probably be an 8.

* Played each origin, tried out different types of character etc but mostly restarted after hitting Ostagar and becoming a Warden.

8/10. Not bad, but it could use a few tweaks to make it better.

8.5/10. Great, but there's hardly a story and it's very short.

DA:O  = 9
DA 2  = 6

Going with the notion that 0 is utter garbage, 1 - 4 below average with step by step upward to average, 5 average, 6 - 9 above average with step by step upward to greatness, 10 brilliant.

To make it a bit clearer how I rate games in general I'll try to give a few other examples.

Games I rate as a...

...10 = Zelda the Windwaker(because its timeless) or Heavy Rain(because it brought us practically a new gaming type/genre and of course it's fantastic too). Other examples = Portal 1/2, GTA:SA, MetalGear, Shadow of the Colossus

... 9 = DA:O (because it brought back a type of game that was surely missed by a lot of people and it's presentation was refreshingly great) or Batman Arkham Asylum (same here brilliant execution but it doesn't really bring something really new to the table). Other examples = Starcraft 2, GTA IV, (modded Oblivion ^_^ ), FF IX, Assassins Creed II, Valkyrie Chronicles

... 8 = The Witcher (Which succeeded bringing the world of the books to life but had some technical flaws that were hard to overlook, played the unenhanced version) or Darksiders (which was also incredibly fun but sadly was only distinguishable due its strong artstyle). Other examples = Fable : Lost Chapters, Bioshock 2, Age of Empires III, Assassins Creed

... 7 = DA2 (because it was average for me on almost all fronts, the advertising boasted of this great 10 year adventure of the greatness of Kirkwall, it did not deliver) or TwoWorlds2  (also not much to say nice to kill some time with it but it doesn't really have a lot that has me jawdropping). Other examples = Practically 99% of all shooters that get released every year, Prince of Persia 4 (the one with the waterpaint style),  Fable 2/3

... 6 = None, I usually don't play(well to be more clear finish) anything that scores lower than 7 for me. Because those games usually feel like chores and I don't do chores in my free time.

TL;DR: 10 = Awetastic, Timeless; 9 = Briliant, Great; 8 = Good, Enjoyable; 7 = Still kind of fun, Average.

TL;DR super simplified version: DA:O = 9, DA2 = 7

Note: Some games are also kind of hard to classify DA:O (thanks to modding ability) and the Witcher (assuming the enhanced version fixed my gripes) for example are practically for me between a 8 and 9.
I rate DA:O higher because it sets the atmosphere(which is also one of its strong points) a lot better than the Witcher in my opinion.

Baldur's Gate 1 = 8,5
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast = 7,5
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn = 10
Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal = 8,5
Neverwinter Nights = 7
Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide= 7
Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark = 8
Knights of the Old Republic = 8,5
Jade Empire = 8
Mass Effect = 9
