Alright gang! And those of you not apart of any gang--myself included, as I don't recall ever joining any gang.

At any rate, the time has come for me to tread the old and beaten paths of Athkatla anew! It's time to once again scour the Umar Hills! Tango with dragons of a truly intimidating size! Slap that treacherous smuggling bastard (no, not Han! He's a bro)! Enter a dance of death deep within the very depths of the Hells; that's right, I'm bringing my plated tutu (hell, I might even install TuTu)! But that's not all: I'm standing up to the law and shouting NO! It's my adventure and I'll cast spells if I want to! Last I checked you weren't the law, O Cowled Wizards, you're a few miles south of Baldur's Gate for it to be so.

Heads will turn, plenty will roll, and damn it all, I'm grabbing myself some good ol' fashioned honka-honka with my grieving Druidess BFF!

I've made up my mind. This is really happening, and there's no turning back now! My will is that of STEEL: Bending, perhaps, should it clash with something of admirable force, but unbreakable-ish.

There's just one problem...

I haven't the slightest idea how to set about preparations for the journey ahead.

Alright, alright, that's not entirely true. I've got an idea, maybe even two, but I'm going to need some help deciding, and that's where YOU come in!

My ears are open, so lets shoot some class suggestions. Be forewarned, I've travelled this road as a Kensai/Mage before, and don't delight at the thought of doing it twice.

Alone, I've come up with two solid ideas thus far: An Archer, or a Bard. Not just any Bard, but a Blade. Honestly though, I'm strongly leaning toward the Archer Kit, as I've never played an Archer beyond BG1. That said, I want to be evil, or at least neutral. I've always thought the whole "evil" thing was a tad unbelievable. I mean, does eating babies really have so much appeal? I've never tried it, but I have my doubts with regards to both the taste and moral implications accompanying such a thing.

I suppose, ultimately, the best question to ask would be: Is there a way to remove the Good-only alignment restriction on Rangers via modding? (Shadow Keeper comes to mind, but I've never fiddled with anything beyond appearances, inventory, and ability scores before)

Short of that, will a Bard using the Blade Kit play vastly different from a Kensai/Mage? Or will I yet again be buffing for hours, then charging headlong into the fray and making heads roll? Yes, I've used that particular idiom twice now. Problem? No? Good. Now HELP ME!

Again, I'm taking suggestions, nothing is yet set in stone, but I'd like to get underway and frankly anything with involving the terms "Mage" or "Good-aligned" just won't do.

If you don't want the hassle of magic buffing (which I can understand) have you considered a monk? They're not easy to play at the start, but once they get their magic resistance (at 14th level) they start to come into their own and can really hand out damage at higher levels. Maybe fists are not the easiest thing to make heads roll, but monks are certainly the origin of the phrase "knock his block off".

A truly evil, sneaky swashbuckler? With Korgan, Viconia and Edwin at your side you can steal candy from babies (instead of eating them) to your heart's content. And on the rapid promotion thieves track, you'll get HLAs and "use any item" abilities before any other "profession".

Playing a monk is certainly a blast, especially after 16th level. The only problem I usually have playing a monk is that it's basically just another fighter - it can't cast spells, pick locks, backstab or do anything else than fight. It's a pretty different kind of fighter, but fighter nevertheless.

I like your suggestion, and for that matter eveyone else's, but a swashy isn't going to get HLAs before any other class, is it?  I mean 3 million XP is still 3 million XP no matter what class you're playing...Image IPB

I don't know if there is a mod to do this or not, but would it really be necessary?  As long as you keep your rep above a certain level (7 iirc) your Ranger won't fall.  Of course if you plan the full-on hard core evil, kill everyone you see, then it may be difficult to maintain 7.Image IPB

I can't really play a fighter as my main character, and ditto the monk and barbarian. All they do is hit stuff. I need the Bhaalspawn to be more flexible than that.

You're right; it justs seems quicker because there's more level changes. I did check old end of SoA saves and I found that my Swashie wound up with slightly more ex pts than 4 different types of fighters (ranger, dwarven, half-orc, kensai). I also agree with Matuse that a pure fighter (say, Dwarven with the Nalia romance) is the easiest way to do a run. Nursing a swashie along through the early part of SoA is more of a challenge.

If you'd like to try an evil ranged character, you may want to consider installing the Tactics Fighter-Archer kit. If custom kits, aren't your cup, then a Pure Kensai with Throwing Daggers/Axes could be interesting.

For what it's worth, I'm currently experimenting with a Dwarven Fighter/Cleric named Arlene. She's primarily relying on the Sling of Seeking and the Dwarven Thrower. She's becoming an interesting ranged fighter. You might enjoy something similar.

Best,

A.

How evil exactly do you want to be? The vanilla NPC evil chars are kinda understated, whereas some of the mod characters are downright creepy.

Kido, who is part of 'Mod for the wicked', is pretty evil. MFTW I doubt will ever get released, although of course this is a rotten thing to say. Kido however is fully playable, he's a Jester, so play in conjunction with Song & silence, and/or rogue rebalancing, to fix bard song.

Valen is pretty insane too, but not easy to use effectively. A backstabber who berzerks and attacks from the front is less than optimal. I must say I found her a complete blast though.

I suggest you try a proper thief, not a swashie. Either multi fighter/thief, Kensai>thief, or thief kit. If you go for multiclass grand mastery, you also don't have to do all that tedious kensai dualling to get a power build.
