This thread has inspired me to give it another go today. I'm going to create a custom maleShep, and he isn't going to look like a clown.

This is the one I'm using. I think it looks good; even better as a Renegade.

I didn't make him, BTW. Got it from Mass Effect 2 Faces.

My best advice is to start with one of the defaults and then alter things from there.

John Shepard, Soldier, Spacer, Ruthless.
I actually think he's pretty hot lol. I did have to restart ME2 twice to fix the fierce sharp cheekbones LMFAO!

I had this same problem and always ended up using Sheploo. No offense to anyone here, but 90% of custom male-sheps are just ugly, generic or something in between. There are some that are kinda good looking, but they still lack that something, if you know what I mean. Maybe adding some more slick, elegant or casual hairstyles could help out a bit.
I didn't have any problems creating a good looking fem-shep though. And a lot of other custom fem-shep designs turn out really nice as well. Although, they could also use a couple of more hairstyles imo.

Personally my best looking Shep.

This shep looks close to mine, same mustach (epic really), but my shep has a softer look to him. I'll post it once I'm on my comp

That's a very awesome face.

At first glance, it doesn't even look like it's from Mass Effect.

What's wrong with the default? Seriously, this guy's not exactly a ogre:

This is probably the only good looking male Shepard I've come across (not mine).

This is a Shepard I created with ME1, basically my first and best attempt. For ME2, I modified the ME1-morph somewhat with a savegame-editor - with great success, if I do say so myself.

For example:

I'd use that code for my shep... but he looks like my cousin, and playing as your cousin would be weird.

You need to be a freaking artist to make a decent looking man-shep. It's like every time I try, he comes out looking like a defunct insomniac. Felt like my college years before I switched out of the Graphic Design course...

Too bad ya can't use the default shep's face and work your way from there. : was disappointed when I couldn't.

True enough, once I tried making a manshep that looked like me and instead I end up with a middle aged asian looking guy with a weird chin.

Much better looking than mine... Mine looked like a cross between Marty Feldman and Dr. House

It IS possible. You just have to take your time. And I never had the problem of the unskipable intro.

See this:

It's my last Shepard. Sorry for the low quality. I play in a SDTV and it was taken with a cellular phone.

I edited the color scheme using Photoshop, but the rest I didn't alter.

I intentionally made my Shep average looking, because I thought the concept of the universe being saved by someone who was not only a war hero but also a Calvin Klein model was completely stupid.

Impossible to create good looking Shep?
My reaction:
Posted Image
It's possible, you just need time.
Generally with Custom Sheps it's all about the situation. This Shep is my favorite. There are a few situations in which he has an absolute rape face.
Posted Image
There are other places where he looks rather... strange.
Posted Image
But that is generally the curse of the custom shep. Just give it some time, I'm sure you'll come up with something.

Edit: well here's one pic I've tried to take with my darn hardware.

Darn 360 though and the camera date was not programmed. <_<

lol...he looks almost exactly like mine, except mine was created in ME1 and imported to ME2.  On first glimpse I was thinking, "how the hell did you get a pic of my Shep?!"
