Who do you guys think is the cannon love interest.  I'm reasonably certain that it's Liara for the following 5 reasons.
1.  She cannot die.
2.  She's arguably the most intelligent of the potential LI (Tali and Mirranda might also qualify)
3.  She was the one who... damnit I can't spoil it... but she did something very important for Shepard.
4.  She is the only LI from the first game who greets Shepard warmly in the second.  I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler.
5.  A certain video released by Bioware involving the PS3 opening comic.

Well I think it's safe to say it would be one of the choices from the first game. Traditional writing often introduces the "heroine" early in the story due to some psychological triggers that are often present in people.

I believe standard precedent has them introduced FIRST (as in love at first sight, sorry for anyone who falls in love with me after I met you) or LAST (I've always been waiting for the right person, and now I know it's you).

It's a fair bet that it's Liara simply because I feel she has a very important role in the story. Not only her actions in the first game, but also her actions in the comic preceding ME2. Ashley may be a poster character but she simply hasn't received the amount of attention Liara has game play wise.

I would advise against using her lack of death as an indicator. That is so very simply made null and void by having a certain someone's death made canon.

This may change with ME3 or may not.

I wouldn't say that there's a canon LI but there's no denying that Liara has gotten a fair bit of special treatment.
Still I'm not as bitter anymore because at least Ashley's coming back and she was always the only girl for me in the whole galaxy*. By Mass Effect 3 I doubt there will be any inherent 'right' or 'wrong' choice, just choice.
Different LI's suit different Shepards.

*Save for one minor playthrough where I romanced Jack.

Ah yes of course it is Liara Well for me at least. The only thing canon in the Trilogy is that Shepard survives ME2.

For me, it's Ashley for ManShep and Thane for FemShep. There is no canon LI in the sense that you are referring to, just as there is no canon Shepard in the first place.

Ahhh Liara. Let's see, she's available for both gender Sheps. She gets called "beautiful" in Genesis while Ash and Alenko has their skillsets described. She gets hugs and kisses while the VS gets emotionally b****-slapped and forced to b****-out, Tali gets turned into a shrinking violet, Garrus into a soulless emo, Thane an incurable disease, Jacob a boring douche, Miranda a busty "consort", Jack an insane crying bald criminal, Samara the *physical manifestation of an Amazonian Goddess who is yet unattainable, Morinth a literal man-eater and Kelly, a varren-lover.

Yes, I'm going to extremes here, but I think you get the idea.

There is no canon LI. But BioWare's prefered LI in ME1 is Ashley and Miranda in ME2.
