No its not, thats the story that cuts off as many attachments from the previous game as possible so that new players don't get confused by meeting people they are meant to already know. Bioware have repeated time and time again, there is no ME canon.

As for a cannon LI, does this qualify?

 Well, despite Liara's awesomeness, Ashley is the "default" LI. That's the closest to canon as you'll get in a Bioware game.

Not for FemShep, she isn't. Default does not equate to canon. There is no canon when player choice comes into it.

My Fem!Shep doesn't even have a romance. The whole whose the canon LI debate would be rendered null considering you don't have to shag everyone you meet.

How do you figure?  Especially given that you have to choose to romance anyone. Ash certainly isn't assumed to be your LI in a default ME2 game.  You get her non-romanced dialogue on Horizon if you play a default MShep.

You do? I've never played a default game, but I always assumed you got her romance dialog. Well, uhh nevermind o.O. Still she is the default person to run to you in the beginning of ME2. (Kaidan if you're female don't be nitpicky)

Personal opinion aside, I don't have a ruddy clue who would be considered "canon." If I had to pick which one would grace m!Shep's lap in an ME movie, for example, I'd bet a cool mill on Liara. Does that mean she's THE canon? Only Bioware knows for sure, and so far, ain't no one talkin'. As soon as they do, someone let me know so I can ready the popcorn and find myself a good seat to watch LI Wars. Best goddamn show on the extranet, that, so says Zaeed. We all know he's a bit bias, though.

Well Mass Effect 3 will not have a default option. you have to play the interactive comic book. So only Mass Effect 2 had a default, and the default in that game had no one as Shepard's love interest.

I watched the Genesis comic, and people are forgetting there was an option to ignore both love interests. Both versions of the game allow you to start off with no romance.

Okay... I'm beaten.

What's funny about that is on PC/360 the only way for Liara to appear is if she was your LI.  On the PS3 though, they have the comic that lets you pick who died on Virmire, but it doesn't play until after the SR-1 is destroyed, so they had to use the character who can't be dead.

Probably the Ashley/Kaiden. Even though I have not experienced it for myself I hear that Kaiden's speech on Horizon is written from the perspective of a former lover. Ashley pursues Shepard quite agrresively in ME1 and is very quick to stake and mark her terriotory while Liara's attraction to Shepard is partially based on the fact that she has never met a human before let alone one that has just saved her life ( ie. Liara's romance with Shepard is more quriousity based ).

I just remembered that if you start Me2 without importing a save from ME1 your default LI wil be Ashley/Kaiden depending on your Shepard's gendre. Thta alone is a strong indicator on who the canon LI is.

Though I did LI Ashley, Jack in seperate playthroughs. Liara is close to Shepard by default because of the mind melding in ME1 so she doesn't count.

Unless you imported a game where you romanced one of them, Ash/Kaidan will be just friends with Shepard.
