Ok lets just say the reaper threat didn't exist, and that the protheans wiped themselves out from civil war or corruption or some other reason (unlikely I know but bare with me). Or if you want, just say the protheans and their data cache never existed. Anyway, we unlock space travel and the mass relays (lets just say the ones BEFORE the protheans created the mass relays), and explore he galaxy. We settle in maybe 3 or 4 star systems with a space station at Arcturus. Then we go to colonise another system and what do we find? A species with say, World War 1/2 tech. What would we do?!
I mean, I know now humans tend to have a higher average set of morals and ethics (though this seems to also be counter-acted by the fact that humanity can now reach all new lows in cruelty), but for over bloody 5 or 6 thousand years, we have been using the slavery system across alot of empires (Roman, Greek, Chinese [althought to a lesser extent I think] just to name a few).
Up until I'd say after the industrial revolutions, the leaders and kings of nations would willingly risk and lose soldier's lives to gain territory (Napoleonic Wars, 'The sun never sets over the British Empire', Mongolian Empire [Khan actually had this form a communism that seemed to actually raise standards of living for its people [not that the standard was very high to begin with], actually cared for those under his control, planned with smart generals, and establish laws so that one old lady can walk from one side of the empire to another without being robbed {amazing feat at the time}, 100 years civil war in France, constant European wars in the middle ages, city-states killing each other in Italia, you name it, we've fought for it).
Hell even in World War 1, nearly a mere century ago, an alliance decided to push their advantage and luck to conquer more land (they got their asses kicked), only for Hitler to try again a scant 20 or 30 years later, because he was delusional. It was only recently when our moral and ethical standards rose, and even up until the 1970s, if you weren't white, people were going to be racist against you.
It is human nature to be selfish and greedy (although many of us can ignore that) and that is when human nature isn't even being naturally evil (humans aren't born evil or just, they are merely shaped by the ethics and morals of those around them and the environment they grew up in. They are forged through their friends, family and society as a whole).
So what I want to know is, if we met the Turians, Asari, Salarians or any other Mass Effect alien species, and they were at maybe cold war tech at best( Salarian), Modern tech (Quarians), Roman tech (Turian), World War 1/2 tech (Krogan) or Egyptian Tech (Batarian), and didn't have extrasolar empires or a fleet, what would we have done? Or hell, maybe it isnt even the Mass Effect races. What if it was 4 or 5 races we have never heard or made up? Would we invade them? Enslave them? Obliterate them? Or would we extend our hand in friendship, peace and prosperity? Would we uplift them? Would we give them tech? Would we secretly manipulate them? Would we impress them with our tech and claim the be gods?
Seriously, what would humanity have done?!
What if humanity had the advantage is the first contact with another species (not the First-Contact War)?

Humanity would probably be friendly at first, but sooner or later we'd take advantage of them, because we're more advanced.
Humans have a hard time respecting those who don't have a stick as big as theirs.
