I just did the quest Magistrate's Orders, and got about +15 Rivalry with Isabela.  How can I get a lot of approval with her in the future, as I want her to be my romance choice?

The biggest bonus that comes to mind is talking to her at the beginning of Act 2 (companion quest). If you take the flirt/romance convo option, you should get +25 Friendship.

When you give her the ship in the bottle, you'll get +15 for taking the flirty option. Don't worry, its not like a kissing scene or anything, its more of a funny thing. Flirty is how Isabella responds to people, so don't be too afraid to use them :)

Where can I find the ship on a bottle?

Act 2, The Blackpowder Courtesy quest. It's in a crate or chest on one of the maps.

Awesome!  How much approval does it give?  Also, is bringing her intot the Fade a good idea?  I know she betrays you, but if you forgive her (which I plan to) will that give me a good amount of approval?

You have to pick the sarcastic response (which is actually quite funny) in the Fade and you get +5 friendship points if I remember correctly. I think you also get points if you forgive her, but can't tell you how many, sorry.

I know you get some approval for saying "I can't match that" or whatever the exact line is (the sarcastic one) when the desire demon tries to tempt her in the fade, and I'm pretty sure you get a fair ammount for forgiving her later, I certainly remember her sounding happy when you do.

Too bad you're on the 360, just using the developer console approval debug script saves you this whole approval mini-game that's really jarring to me.

Edit: Now I just look silly.. Damn ninjas.

You can romance her as a rival too, you know. ("low" approval)

If only it were that simple. If you're friendly with them in all their conversations but disagree with them on one too many political issues it can cost you the realtionship, you almost need to be full one or the other. It's especially difficult with Isabela because of the approval check that can remove her from the party for good in act 2.

I agree, it's rather difficult with Isabela. Rivalry in general I think is a bit flawed because it expects you to be diametrically opposed to the other character when there may be some things you say that they like and some that they don't, without being inconsistent per se. With characters like Anders and Fenris it doesn't seem to matter as much because as long as you're consistent on their one Big Issue you should be okay.

Since the first gift was already mentioned, Isabela's second gift, the Rivaini Talisman, can be found in Act 3 (in the Disused Passage at the Docks).

If you want more information, you should check out hoorayforicecream's FAQ about Friendship and Rivalry with Isabella, as well as other information about Isabella, here: The Isabella FAQ

The OP confused me for a while because I remembered getting lots of Isabela friendship for the Magistrate's Order quest, I've always done that quest in the same way so kinda forgot there was another way to do it.

I tried to let the son live, I felt unclean afterwards and had to reload, rivalry be damned.

Does anyone give friendship for letting him live? Or rivalry for killing him? I always kill him and I've only ever got friendship or no change from the companions I brought.

But does anyone give rivalry for killing him? Seems like everyone thinks he should die (and I agree).

No one gives rivalry for killing him, since he is a child killing monster who deserves to die. I've only seen rivalry given for sparing him. Bethany, Carver, Merrill, Isabella, and Aveline give rivalry if you spare Kelder. Fenris actually wants to kill him. I imagine that none of the companions endorse sparing a repellant murderer of children if it means he has a chance to kill again (and that's precisely what happens if he isn't killed), which is why Aveline looks the other way (legally) and gives friendship.
