 Background:
  • Installed DA:O Ultimate
  • Win 7 64bit OS
  • Logged into my Bioware acct at all times
  • completed Witch Hunt with all Achievements accomplished
Problems:
  • Went back into my DA:O game post Witch Hunt, had received all items except the Bow
  • Looked at my achievement list and it was showing as completed but "Locked" vs "Unlocked and Uploaded" like the other three achievements.
  • Thinking this was an issue that could be resolved using the DAOU_UpdateAddinsXML app,  this was a MISTAKE as now all 4 achievments are showing as complete and are now "LOCKED". You can see the achievements listed here as a confirmation of completion, and in the im-game player profile they look for all intents and purposes to be unlocked - except they are not.
How do I rectifiy this issue now?

PS - when I ran the DAOU_UpdateAddinsXML app it was laden with errors relating to xml files.

As an update, I also notice my Blood Dragon Armor is missing - I wasn't using it yet so it wasn't overly apparent. As an aside, I created a new DAO character and the blood armor did show up.

Have not fixed my blood dragon armour issue, but I did go back and battle the Varterral again to see what would happen if I beat it again (had a save just prior to fighting it that was easy to go back to). In defeating it, the following took place:

1. Awarded the achievement again

2. Witch Hunt DLC unauthorized itself    ... huh?!?!!?

3. I then rebooted completely

4. Witch hunt was Authorized but the achievment was again locked

5. Fought the Varterral again, making sure my server did not time out (at my office I can stay connected, at home I for the life of me cannot get the game and my router to play nice with each other)

6. Defeated the Varterral (again .. sigh)

7. Achievement awarded

8. Everything remained normal - DLC stayed authorized and the Achievements are unlocked (for now).

9. Exited the game

10 Reloaded the game - all DLC unauthorized

11. Logged into the servers

12. DCL authorized itself but the Achievements are now LOCKED again!!!!!

13. Fustration level rising to unseen porportions

Summery

If my DLC becomes unauthorized (which seems to happen frequently), any unlocked items attained via achievements become LOCKED again. This ultimately deletes the items from all DLC modules forcing you to redo the achievement again until the next time you loose your DLC authorization.

How do I keep my authorized DLC continually authorized?!?!?!

Log in, authorize DLC, and then log out and stay logged out.  Disable the auto-login option.

This is an issue which will probably be addressed in the 1.05 patch, which is, according to this post, still in the planning stages.

This works in practice, until I log in to find all my DLC deactivated - forcing me to log in to reactivate it all again ... its a constant tail chasing to get things working they way they should.

Using your suggestion I re-did Leliana's Song.

1. All showed up as unlocked.
2. Leaving myself logged out with auto log in unchecked it seemed stable
3. Quit the game and came back in
4. All DLC was unauthorized
5. forcing me to log in to reauthorize
6. doing so locked all my achievements again.

In a perfect world I guess I would have a dedicated machine to play this on so that I would never have to log out - leaving myself in game permanently, then this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm trying to get my head around these issues and for the life of me I cant find a solution in these forums.
In a nutshell:
  • I need to be logged in to have my DLC show up as usable
  • I need to be logged out after completing an achievement to be able to access it
  • Coming back into the game after exiting, while LOGGED OUT unauthorizes my DLC
  • Logging back in to authorize my DLC locks my achievements - even though they show as completed
Am I really the only person experiencing this? Do I reinstall? I'm suprised at how badly this is messed up considering this isn't a new game, it feels like I'm dealing with issues more attuned to a freshly released game.
Things tried:
  • Logging out method (see that endless cycle above)
  • making sure updater is running in services.msc
  • threatening the life of my laptop
  • rebuilding profile.dap file
  • switched uploader in services to automatic instead of manual
  • gone through Radial's suggestions (halfway down the page - long post)  for setting up the downloader
  • tried changing my addins.xml to read RequiresAuthorization="0" instead of RequiresAuthorization="1" - cosmetically this works, even coming into the game logged out I can see that my DLC is authorized, but when I tried to play any of it, its treated as UNAUTHORIZED regardless to how it shows up in the main screen.
I'm not really wanting to move forward in the game as I'm worried that DLC characters and areas will also be bugged, not just the stand alones like Witch Hunt/Leliana's Song/et al, I guess I'm at an impass. All thats left is trying a full reinstall. If that doesnt work I'll replay the two stand alones I've completed, with saves just before each achievment so that I can recreate them and unlock properly if/when the game gets fixed.

As an aside, I've also noted that when playing in a windowed mode instead of full screen, I can't actually type - basically cutting me off from being able to log in.

I'm counting to 10 before posting this, I promise ...

I'm now on my 2nd download of the day (29gigs) from the EA Download manager .... why you ask? Because every time I uninstall the game, it takes the installer with it ... even when I instruct it to keep the installer. This is the first and last 'digital download' I purchase, this is amazingly inefficient and a colossal waste of time.

First, as to the EADM issue... I don't recall that happening to me.  However, when I last installed DAO- UE I did copy the entire installation directory to an alternate location.  As you say, it's big, but I liked the insurance.  There's a forum over on the EA website for EADM issues:  http://forum.ea.com/...s/show/214.page

Now, to your DLC issue.  You should be able to start the game, log on and authorize, and then log out and never need to go online again.  If you DO go online again, that's where the error happens... the game tries to reauthorize the DLC and that causes problems.  That's what's being addressed in the next patch.

Let me ask:  does the Windows user account you're using have administrator access?

The sequence of events as to logging out is as stated above. If I log out, and come back into the game all my DLC moves to unauthorized so this unilatterally fails, I have to be logged in for the DLC to be available to me. The windows account is the only account on the system (Win7 x64) and is the administrator acct.

If I log out and remain in the game after authorizing the DLC, its as you state, everything plays nice and as I would expect. Its when I exit the game and come back in while logged out that it all goes wrong with the DLC. I'm truely beginning to think I am the only one with this specific issue which is why I'm taking the reinstallation route.

I changed my install directory via the EADM for this last install and that created a whole new set of issues as uninstalling did not remove all the Services Entries for the Updater service. So I went through the registry and removed everything  related to the service and am now awaiting the 2nd download of the day to try again. I did head over to the EADM forums and found that I'm not the only one with this Digital Download issue .. suprise suprise. Confidence in EA is waning.

In the meantime I received this sagely advice from EA support over my issue:
----
Hi,

Clearly they didnt understand, so maybe the way I'm presenting it here is way off?

Well, it's nice of them to give you a free copy of Witch Hunt, but no, they obviously did not understand....

BTW... you are not alone, it seems.  There's another current thread reporting a similar issue: http://social.biowar...66613/1#7270032

If I may make a suggestion, once your download is complete, refrain from installing the game.  Instead, go into the configure menu for EADM and disable the "start at windows startup" option (don't recall the exact phrase).

Then reboot.  Launch the EADM manually by right-clicking on it and selecting "Run as admin".  Do this even if you have admin privilages already... it helped my once.  Then install Ultimate Edition.  When it's done, reboot AGAIN and don't launch the EADM... try running the game itself and see if it works.

If it does, great.  If not, I would like to get details of your hardware specs so I can compare data between your system and the other user's.  If you could, include what anti-virus software you're using.  We'll look for commonalities and I'll try to see if the devs can help.

Thanks,

RI

Sadly there are no options here that allow for download with no install - the installation is automated via EADM. If I can manage to catch it at the right time I can copy over the source files into a seperate directory though so that if need be I can install with administrative powers.

The problem in the link above is similar to what I'm experiencing, except that I didnt have to mess around with the Updater Service, it was always working properly.

I'm running:
  • 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 Processor
  • 4GB DDR2 800MHz MemoryATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 w/ 512mb ram
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Bus speed is 800
  • AVG Free edition antivirus
  • dlink 815 router and linksys routers both tested, same result, both with forwarding and also with DMZ to as an experiment.

Quick update, 2x reinstalls today and the exact problem persists. Maybe its related to W7 x64, I dunno, but I've spent 10hrs today spinning my wheels on it.

I will just replay the stand alone modules again with saves prior to each individual achievement and recreate them as needed later in hopes that there really is a fix for this coming. It sort of defeats the purpose of having the Ultimate collection but it is what it is right now.

To confirm, is your DLC staying authorized when you log out and quit the game, then restart?

The DLC will remain authorized after I log in (it will also remain authorized if I log out after logging in - providing I do not quit the game back to desktop). Should I leave myself logged in when I quit ... providing I dont reboot, I will be automatically logged in again upon returning, if I reboot I'm forced to manually log in for my 1st session.

Should I be logged out when I enter the game the DLC will be unauthorized, and this could be the root of my problem.

I'm wondering if I'm always considered 'logged out' when I return to the game, but since I have auto log in checked, I'm reauthorizing each time I come back, but its happening in the background as the game is coming up and completed by the time I have access to the GUI. This would make sense since really the autolog in is doing exactly what I would have to do manually myself each time I enter, its just doing it the input for me.

At any time I enter the game with no internet connection my DLC will also shift into unauthorized, forcing me to only be able to enjoy the full game by being logged in at pretty much all times.

The act of becoming unauthorized resets my status's with my unlocked DLC achievements essentially resetting them in all but appearance (the graphic is fully shown but the status reads 'locked'). So if I'm right in my assumption that the game consideres me unauthorized until the autolog-in is completed, each time I come back to the game I'm actually resetting my achievements.

I cant really flowchart properly here but I hope I'm getting the idea across.

Here is a link to a screen shot depicting exactly what I'm trying to describe. I'm logged in, the DLC is authorize, the achievement is completed but its description is showing as 'locked'

Let's forget about achievements for a moment and try a simple yes or no...

You launch the game.  You log into the social network.  Your DLC authorizes.  You log *out* of the social network.  You turn off the "automatic login" function.  Finally, you exit the game back to the desktop.

Here's the question, yes or no... when you launch the game again, and you don't log in, is your DLC authorized?

No, and just tested again under the new install to reconfirm. The act of logging in is the only way I've ever been able to authorize my DLC when coming in.

Interesting development. This bug only seems to affect the DLC that comes playable as stand alone modules. Shale is not affected (just attained and tried out in all possible ways - reboots, logged in, logged out ect). Through out it all, the Shale achievement remains "unlocked and uploaded".

Okay, I've found a bit of a work around ... its not much but its something.

So long as the items are not in your general inventory they will remain in the game. Either equip the items received from the stand alone modules or move them into the party chest at Soldier's Peak. So far I've been able to retain my items in this fashion even if the achievements once again become locked.

If I leave them in my general inventory, they evaporate as soon as the achievement becomes locked. As a tip for any others dealing with this issue, I strongly suggest creating a new save just prior to each achievement so that it's easy to load up and recreate the achievement awards on demand. There is no need to save after you get the achievement, its awarded as soon as you see the reward badge announced in game.

This sounds exactly like what happened to me on my first DAO install. While I'd formatted the OS before I was able to check it, others have confirmed this was their problem. It's a symptom of DAO not properly installing its CD key in the Windows registry. The quick check is to open the DAO config utility and see if your CD key is listed on the Games tab. I bet it's missing. See e.g. this or this for fixing it.

The DAO Ultimate installer seems to have some real issues with that CD key, at least on Impulse. (I detailed my own troubles with DAO Ultimate installation on Win7 here.)

 Thanks Kloreep,

This is probably nailing down the issue a little more, my config utility registration list is empty.

Your solution in the 1st link: I have the digital edition via EAStore, the file that came with the game (dragon age origins - ultimate edition/_installer/disk1/support/dragon age origins - ultimate edition_code.exe for those playing along at home with the same edition) does not run. I get a 'program not properly installed' error and does not launch.

Link #2: my registry entries are not quite as described here, they look like this. The code was actually in the appropriate spot already, but I did try to spread the love temporarily and insterted it in all the EA 'defaults'. This made no difference and the code never did show up in the config util (I then reverted it back in case I was breaking something else).

Also attempted (and failed):
  • Making a new "ergc" entry under the upper most dragon age line.
  • changing the registration to the DLC bonus content code rather than the digiital rights code.
OS is Win7 x64

How about the nuclear option?
1) Uninstall everything in safe mode (game and EADM)
2) reboot
3) use a registry sweeper like CCCleaner to sweep out any reference to EA/dragon age
4) reboot
5) Install latest EADM as an Admin
6) reboot
7) Run EADM as Admin, Install UE
8) Reboot
9) Launch UE, authorize DLC, sync achievements
10) Exit and move saved character files back to My Docs folder.

I may try that in the near future. I'm going to wait out the forthcoming patch 1st before I go through another reinstall.

My weekend reinstall was pretty much as described above, the only difference is I did not also uninstall the EADM. I manually deleted every single entry related to dragon age (I don't put much trust in cleaners vs handling it myself). I was forced to do this as I installed in a different directory than install #1 and the daupdater wasn't pointing to the right directory in Services, so by install #3 on the weekend I actually got in up to my elbows in the registery and stripped it of all things dragon age before starting.

I think if the "dragon age origins - ultimate edition_code.exe" gets patched or addressed seperately so that it worked properly in Win7 x64, that it would probably solve these issues.

As it stands now, so long as I have an internet connection I can play. With my achievements being locked, I've now come up with a workaround thats satisfactory for me in the short term. Being able to play offline would be nice though. I just find it fustrating that on a game thats been out this long that something this critical still needs patching to begin with.
