What if Aveline doesn't become Guard-Captain?

For my canon playthrough, I don't want Aveline to become Captain of the Guards and will not complete the "The Way It Should Be" quest.

Does the story play out differently with Aveline being just a guard and not a captain?

Can you skip "The Way It Should be"?

I think you can skip it. I haven't skipped it yet. I know you can refuse and tell her to have the guards do it. Not sure what happens if you do that. Or you can also accept it but not finish it ( I assume since it's a companion quest not a main quest).

I also wonder if the ambushes continue into Acts 2 and 3.

You can skip it.
She still becomes Captain.

Really? But then I thought Jeven won't be caught and the ambushes will contine?

Anyone else who skip her companion quest can confirm it?

Jeven is such a git that he would eventually get caught anyway.

I did it's obvious. If you want I could try and get the codex/dialogue for after the expedition.

Wow. There is absolutely NO difference in codex entries. None. Once so ever.

And the conversation paths....as far as I can tell, absoultely no difference once so ever.

I'm sorry. not doing a quest hardly qualifies as making a choice. You're only choosing to be lazy and unhelpful. Did anything in Aveline's personality make you think she wouldn't pursue things on her own time if you didn't help?

Then what was the purpose of giving us the quest? EXP? Loot?

I'm trying to make a canon playthrough of Aveline being a lowly guard =(

EXP and Loot is the purpose of the entire game.

Aveline will be Guard Captain.  The Qunari will attack.  Hawke will be the Champion.

Nothing you do matters.

She asked for your help and offered to pay you for it. Just because you turned it down it didn't suddenly make her a bad guardsman who sits by when she suspects corruption. She found other means.

If McDonalds offers you a job and you turn it down, does the entire franchise close? I think they'd just hire someone else.

Anyway like all companion quests, the main purpose is to improve your relationship with that companion.

Yeah, unless the game allows you to do something that prevents her from becoming guard captain.  In this case, the game just gives you the option not to help her.

But later, you do get to influence whether she hooks up with Donnic or not.  There is a marked difference in results depending on how you handle that.

I'm curious- what happens if she doesn't end up with Donnic? I love that quest so I always do it.

if i am not mistaken it is considered to be a main quest

check quest log and see where it is posted  if it is side or companion quest then you will be fine

I didn't do the quest and moved forward. In the second Act Aveline says that Jeven resigned from the guards and no one knows why he left. This is the first time I hear that 'Aveline caught him on her own' - because nothing in my conversations with her indicated that. In addition, when you get to Act 3, there is no quest from Cullen regarding Aveline's performance in the guard - i.e. Jeven did not start up trouble.

My expectation from not doing "the way it should be" was that Aveline would continue her investigation until she is found in a ditch somewhere. Aveline's a great warrior, but without Hawke's assistance I fully expected her uncompromising and brazen attitude to get her into trouble and possibly dead in one of those dark corners the guards don't patrol.

Mainly she wont marry Donnic, which means he wont help out in the end battle. Also affects some bits of her act 3 quest.

In short she becomes a harder Captain who isn't balanced out by Donnic so inspires less loyalty. Which basically means You can face up to double the enemies because her guards side with the old captain and his revenge scheme.

there is a very, very minor difference in whether or no you do her act 1 quest. complete the quest and she's full Captain (officially promoted between acts 1 and 2) if you don't then she's acting/temportary captain during act 2 and there's one or two dialogue lines reflecting that. but I think she's made full captain anyway by act 3 regardless
also if you don't do her act 1 quest she'll have no act 3 quest for you

This is true.
Chooses and consequences is part of DA2 story....  Wait, what?
