So unfortunately I got a bit spoiled by a guide that told me my sibling , in this case Bethany, will become a Grey Warden (if I take Anders along) or forced into the Circle. I haven't started the Deep Roads Expedition yet, but was looking for a bit of advice.

It's kind of a pity that I'm aware of this meta-knowledge, my initial plan was to leave her behind , but I understand there is some dialog before the missions starts?

Someone also told me that Warden Bethany is much more interesting (despite the fact she apparently hates you?).

Without getting into further spoilers that I know, I wonder if people could offer advice on which they found more narratively rewarding.

Sorry for being a bit of a flake, alas I am one when it comes to stuff like this. The fate of characters I grow to like.

When you go to Bartrand to tell him you're ready to start the expedition, you'll have a chance to pick your party. You'll have a cut scene with Leandra and can decide then what Bethany is going to do.

In both of my playthroughs, I left Bethany in Kirkwall, so I can't give you a counter to that. For me, as a player (and just going along for the ride of the story), it felt right to leave her the first time, and then on the second pass, knowing what would happen, I just didn't really want to have her either die, or go through the Joining.

Should you take her and, if Anders is in the party, make her into a Warden, I believe that she will initially seem to hate you and have nothing to do with you (this will be imparted via letter). However, if your Friendship is high enough, she'll come back and offer to fight with you in Act III. Leaving her in Kirkwall gives you the Act III return as well. And then of course, based on your decisions up to and in Act III, there are a couple of additional options to decide her fate/your relationship with her.

I hope that helps.

I tried all the options in various plays and found making my sibling a warden to be the best choice. It eliminates some interesting dialog in the end game but it also is more fitting as I have always sided with the mages. Carver becomes a little less hostile and insecure as a warden. Bethany also becomes a more confident person as a warden. Also there are hints in the game that the wardens are on a quest of their own. They are not just hanging around Kirkwall for the sights. If this quest is revealed in DA3, maybe Hawke's sibling will also be there in a cameo as a warden.

I made Bethany a Warden in my current game, but haven't finished it so I can't say what will be different in Act 3. However, I did enjoy the extra scene we got in the Deep Roads. I'd suggest you try it at least once to see that.

Also, IMHO, it makes more sense for her to be out of Kirkwall and thereby unreachable during a quest in Act 2 where you'd think Hawke would seek her out, but doesn't. (Not saying more in case you haven't played through at least once.)

hm thanks for the responses. A pity I've been spoiled (not because of this thread but elsewhere) in terms of what happens later on (the larger struggle). Though not completely (I hope).

I think I would have had my Hawke keep her behind. So it's likely I'll do that...in an attempt to pretend I wasn't aware of the  meta knowledge. I may change my mind...

Thanks for the input

I may try it both ways , if it doesn't take ultra long (the deep roads part at least).

At least with a sarcastic Hawke, Bethany seemed to be much more receptive to being left behind. She seemingly only wants to go to be with her sibling, and doesn't really understand the danger of facing darkspawn (she's much more worried about templars finding her).

Carver, on the other hand, really wants to go on the expedition, so much so, that he'll recommend that Hawke stay behind while he goes.

So going off of the dialogue (without meta-gaming), I'm much more inclined to leave Bethany behind, but take Carver along.
