I'm quite happy that I went with the diplomatic/sarcastic options when I had this conversation.
But I find it hysterical (and fantastic) that Aveline just brushes herself off and essentially says "thanks for that." Hallmark of a good friendship to draw blood then shake hands.

Don't feel too bad. My first runthrough (which I imagine was similar to yours), I didn't get any fun either.

My guess: Isabela left with the tome and sailed to Ostwick. Or he never recruited her in the first act.

I think I've had the party member in the party before in that type of situation and they still ended up being in the cutscene.

Pretty sure that Isabela's there even if she's in your party. She almost never left my party, and I never saw Varric there instead of her.
