Why the fixation on Alistair? I realise he's the only who gets the cameo, but I'm pretty sure that if BioWare go down the "Chantry of Ferelden" route, they'll do it irrespective of who took the throne.

They're fixating on Alistair because the majority of people put him on the throne over Anora.

I'm not sure why Ian first brought him up, but for me at least it's that issue and the issue that at face value, he's the one less likely to break off, especially unhardened.  So discussing him is sort of a test-case.  Plus, I don't want to write "Alistair/Anora" all the time.

I suppose Thedas is ready for a reformation of some sort, and a new age of reason. The Chantry stands in the way of that happening, it seems. As far as Tevinter is concerned, I consider it to be another Thay, rather than anything that's existed in human history.

Thay's a good comparison as far as its politics and slavery.  The wiki's Tevinter page has a link to a post where Gaider says they based Tevinter loosely on the Byzantine Empire, but says the European comparisons won't be too neat - thus there's doubt, hence this thread!

As for an age of reason...I haven't seen any real groundwork, although maybe I'm not that observant?  The most I can think of is that in the mage origin, if you ask the senior enchanter who's talking to Niall to sign your form for the fire rod, then he says you need to write a report on your research project, properly footnoted and annotated.  It sounded very academic.  otoh, given DA2 the writers may channel mages' research to blood magic a la the Tevinter research in Kirkwall - or the mages might never emerge from their war for that matter.

Other than that, all I can think of is that some of the codex entries written by Chantry scholars seemed Scholastic-inspired.  Although there's a long line between Scholasticism and the Enlightenment.

Satry,

You are thinking of Senior Enchanter Tobias not Niall. Niall is just another mage (albeit a very strong and experienced one apparently).

Yeah, I said the one's who's talking to Niall, b/c I couldn't think of Tobias' name :P
