I'm thinking the same thing. Clint Mansell taking on Mass Effect 3 is a huge step up for Bioware--the guy could take any project he wants, and he chose ME3. Nice one, Bioware.

Actually I didn't like how they used the Vigil music in Mass Effect 2. It's a great piece of music and it fit the scene on Ilos perfectly, but in ME2 it was just the nostalgia theme and it didn't have the same effect.XyleJKH wrote...

Meanwhile, I can pinpoint EXACT moments in ME2 where I remember the music- like Samara's recruitment bossfight music, or the music that blares up when you first meet the Shadow Broker.

Orchestrated music provides more emotion to the listener rather than the beeps and boops of ambience. The only time I feel it can be more effective, are the more eerie, creepier parts of the game; like the Collector Ship in ME2, and the abandoned freighters and facilities in ME1. ME3 will need something uplifting and inspiring... you are going against the Reapers after all...
edit: Plus the word generic is getting tossesd around too often that it just sounds stupid now. Nothing is generic, and to the ones who think so seem to be limited to these forums and these forums only.

Because truth be told ME1's soundtrack wasn't as vast as people think. A lot of........actually most missions had the exact same themes, other than, as previously mentioned meeting virgil, the attack on the citadel, and the Virmire mission(which had some of the best music in the game). I'm not saying ME1's soundtrack was bad, I think it was great, but I think ME2 added more elements to the foundation taken from the fist game.

I think people are acting like Manswell is an idiot. You don't think Bioware will give him all of the music from ME and ME2 as resources and tell him to continue the feel of the music? Really?

Anybody who makes complaints like this need to make sure they know what they're talking about. Clint Mansell's music is anything but generic.

There is only so much one can do with any type of music. Orchestrated music is much too common for that it all holds little to no meaning anymore, you hear it in movies, and commercials for video games all the time, and within video games themselves. I like ambience because it's interpretive, not saying everything should be ambient either, but the atmosphere is so much more meaningful with an ambient track, like some Overlord's soundtrack in the Geth ship. Orchestrated scores (If you can really call them that since a lot of times it's just synthesized) seem to try and force an emotion on you rather than letting the listener immerse themselves with the atmosphere and the music as one.
They're nice, but when it comes down to it, they really are ultimately the same in today's entertainment, and music. When the situation is coming, I can almost already hear the song being played before it's even starts. Orchestrated music can be put in basically any situation, even from another game, or movie, and still be considered fitting. Some might call it being adaptable, but I see it as evidence to how it is just too.. Similar. I hear ambient music, and I know it won't work in every other soundtrack or movie out there, mostly because ambient works for that situation, and atmopshere by itself. That's what makes it so fitting, because it's MADE for that area, and that area alone.
On the other hand, I've heard some properly done orchestrations/ambient hybrids and it works beautifully..
The difference between "generic" and "epic" is that epic IS an overused term in the modern lexicon to describe something, and basically everything that is meant to be "grand", or "spectacular". I could easily change my wording to say it's too general, or common instead of "generic".
