I thought the bomb was over the top, just seems to break the world abit if people can make something as powerful as that. why don they just chuck aload down the deep roads?

To be fair, the Deep Roads are under most of Thedas, making it impossible to completely wipe them out with the bombs.

Also, It would probably cause all sorts of problems if massive sections of the Deep Roads were blown up, causing chasms in the middle of trade routes, destroying farms etc.

That and the Dwarves would probably prefer to reclaim the Deep Roads.

i consider that acceptable collateral damage

besides my point was realy just that a weapon like that would way to powerful for that world, besides nukes have been detonated underground before.  you could just drop one to the bottom of the dead trenches sure it probably wouldnt do 2 much damage at all

My question is why he didn't place it in the Templar HQ or near it. There's no way he would have missed Meredith with that kind of bomb

The templar HQ is the gallows.

  • You can visit the Gallow with Anders in the party
  • And you can accept Merdith / Orsino quest with Anders in tow...so that's not a problem
  • By starting the war the Cricle blood would be spilled so safely protect the Circle isn't high up on his list either

Chantry controls the lyrium distribution to templars, so it must have lyrium storage room. Guess that's where Anders planted his nice bomb for added effect.

TBH I think it was just a normal explosive and they decided to make it look like a giant magical energy beam because it looked cooler in the cinematic. So no, I don't think that the mages are going to start employing tactical nukes in the upcoming war.

We don't know what else went into the potion. The selae petre and drakestone were the ingredients Anders was having trouble getting hold of. Being a Tevinter recipe who knows what else was in there.

Didn't the bomb leave those odd lights in the sky after the explosion? NNormal bombs don't do that.

I love that the bomb was equal parts science and magic.

I hope that aspect of the bomb is further explored. It's weird that in a universe with magic that no one's harnessing it with scientific analysis.

Simple example: with simple rune crafting there should never be a torch in rich houses or castles. Ever burning/glowing lamps should be installed.

Elaborate example: you can easily get into some crazy steampunk like designs with a magical steam engine. But machines can easily be built with the properties of lyrium as a power source.

You are correct.  I don't think that there's any real story explanation set up around it.  I think it just looks really cool so they went with that.

Wonder what other items he had Anders did mention in his own spirit manipulated way that he was adding to what ever he already had

From what i've gathered, it is likely his bomb at least partly consisted of gunpowder, mixed with magic I would imagine.

I felt the same way when I saw that scene - the way the explosion was rendered, it looked out of place for a fantasy setting.

I wish they'd tied Ander's bomb to the Blackpowder quests - like, say, if Javaris the Dwarf had an unknown partner, who was revealed at the end to be Anders.   And then maybe your actions earlier on could have an effect on the Chantry bomb...

Didn't he use magic to set the bomb off? I figured that is why he hits the ground twice with his staff.
The world of Thedas as it is now does not look like it studies science very much except for the Quanari. It seems still a little dark age where things that can not be explained must be magic or the hand of the maker. There is enough world history in game that there should be at least 1 earthquake mentioned yet I have not seen anything. Something like that would probably be considered a punishment from the maker much like it was here.

how do people know sela petrae = salt peter?

Also how did folks see that pool of mercury-like substance and figure out .. oh that was XYZ???

Edit:  Nevermind.  I didn't recall that drakestone was "yellow" ... I just saw a pool of mercury like substance and went "what's that"??
