Why was the "event" involving the chantry at the end the way it was?

I spoiled myself on the forums so I knew what was coming, but I was not prepared for giant bloody lasers erupting from the ground. I was expecting an explosion of some sort sure, but not this.

Why and how did it happen the way it did?

Best I can figure is magic. I mean, there's no way we collected enough stuff to make THAT big of an explosion with gunpowder alone. And it would most distinctly not have made THAT kind of explosion. So, I figure the gunpowder was just a catalyst or component of a spell, for sympathetic magic or something like that.

sympathetic magic? That magic must feel very bad then about killing all those people Image IPB

I think you mean synthetic magic Image IPB

anyway, we helped Anders collect two ingredients. There's no telling what else he might have gotten his hands on.

Looks like a combination of the explosives and force magic. That would at least explain why the debris is sucked up in the air before it's hurled all over the place.
