Creating new (retextured) models

Many builders would like to make their work look a bit "different" - not have the same old creatures and items as everyone else is using.

Creating new models from scratch is hard, and we are not quite at the point yet where we can do that.  However, it is easy to create variety by retexturing existing assets, so that will provide a bit of variety in the meantime.

Consider for example the rage demon and this modified version of it:

The second version looks quite different, even though it uses the same model, and would help in adding a bit of variety.

As another example, consider cats - currently all cats look the same ... but it would be nice to have black cats, white cats, or even radioactive glow-in-the-dark zombie cats.

Please note that I am not talking about just replacing the textures of existing models (which would change all instances of the model in the game), which is trivially easy to do - but rather to add new models with modified textures, so builders can for example chose whether they want a brown bear, a black bear or a white polar bear - or have them all side by side.

In order to accomplish this, I have created a group http://social.bioware.com/group/712/, as this is something I cannot do on my own.

I have written tools to make the retexturing easy, and will attempt to provide a bit of coordination as well, but I am looking for help in the 2D department - basically, I am looking for people who are much more skilled in using Photoshop than I am.  My own skills in that area are basically limited to making simple color changes like the above example.  The group also needs people who can take the resulting models and package them in a nice Builder-to-Builder package, ready for use by other builders.

Anyone interested?  If so, send me a message with information on how you can contribute.

Do you have any information on the texture formats that bioware have used this time around?

Having the artistic skill or the knowledge of a suitable graphics program is only part of the battle.

Uhm... the texture format is just plain dds - easy to convert to tga and back. Each model uses multiple texture files, but they are fairly well explained in the wiki (and the use is pretty clear in the mao file anyhow).

However, as far as this project is concerned, the only texture that is usually of concern is the plain old diffuse on - unless, of course, you need "glow-in-the-dark" models (requiring changes to the emissive texture) or if you need to change wood to stone or something like that (in which chase ypu would need to modify the bump and/or specular texture).

I'm interested. I was just wondering if I could redo the texture of the fat body but it's more useful to have a lot available.

I like this idea. I just finished my first playthrough so I would definitely be interested in helping out. It would be great to familiarize myself with the texturing process before we can actually start importing our own custom models. Time to pick up a *.dds to *.tga converter.. Apparently the Photoshop dds plugin I installed doesn't work with cs4.

Just opened up DATool for the first time this morning. Love it--nice work Adinos.

You mean this one?

Yeah, I agree - it is somewhat...limiting - You cannot really imagine that person as a rich, fat merchant, wearing shabby clothes like that, for example.

Is your blue raged demons ready to use?

I´m working on elemental-summonung-spells for mages and this one would make a perfect water-elemental.

Could it be downloaded somewhere and may I use it? Giving credits would be self-evident!

I'd like to help with the "2d department" I'm moderately good at image programs, eg: I can edit a game texture so its very different from its original look, but I couldn't change the sort of material it appears to be without a source image.
