I was not spoiled at all before buying the game so my decisions were not planned.

1. First play through I left Bethany at home because I was worried about losing a sibling to another cut scene death.

2. Second time around I took Bethany with me because I thought I could keep her away from the templars, and she died.

Somewhere, a Bioware writer is quietly smiling at your pain/frustration and thinking "mission accomplished."

And Grey Warden Carver turns out nicely.  His reaction when my magehawke sided with Meredith shows he  isn't just mages-bite-I-resent-everyone.  ^_^

Doesn't Bethany not want to be a Grey Warden, but Carver sort of does?

Carver makes a good warden. It would be very difficult for me to make him a templar especially since you are a mage, whether good or "evil".

Canon will probably have Carver as a Warden but honestly my fave is having Bethany executed.

Is there a reason you like seeing Bethany executed? Do you think it creates better story potential, do you think it creates a better family dynamic, or are you just a souless bastard?

I usually have Bethany join the circle, and I'm just now on my first Carver playthrough, and he's a Warden.

I have a stalled game where I tried out a mHawke, and somehow in my customizing, I ended up with the worst (ugliest) Bethany ever. She had pink eyeshadow on, and I swear if I hadn't seen the other versions, I would have thought it was a joke. I may just let the Deep Roads take her if I do pick it up...

How many versions of Bethany are there? And does Carver's appearance change as well, based on your customization choices?

I feel like it's best to leave Bethany home, because she doesn't seem to like being a Warden (or being dead!) when she becomes one, and Carver should become a Warden, because he seems to like being a Warden rather than being a Templar.

I personally used to always bring Carver to the deeproads to die, simply because he is such a pr!ck for the most part. I always left Anders out of the deeproads out of respect for the fact that he didnt like it there, but on discovering that bringing Anders and turning Carver over to the Grey Wardens made Carver a much better person/brother, that is the role I always choose for him now.

(I must say, DA2 Mage ROCKS!!!!!!!!!)

- in previous play throughs, I have tried every other option, the Grey Warden was the last for me to discover and is my personal favorite.

"Mean" Hawke has Templar brother.
"Sarcastic" Hawke has a Warden sister.
"Nice" Hawke has a Circle sister, sides with mages.
"Lawful Good" Hawke has Circle sister, sides with Templars and saves all mages he can.

@ Happy Daiz -- Asian Bethany is my favorite, and I always laugh at how she almost looks like my girlfriend's sister since I based my rogue Hawke on my girlfriend. The Black Bethany is also very pretty, as is the default. The only Bethany I was unhappy with was the one where I was trying to make a Greek looking Hawke.

EDIT: Note to anyone else who wants to make a dark skinned Hawke -- Gamlen gets a face that matches the rest of the family, but his neck and hands stay white (XBox360 version). Boy, does he look stupid.

Bethany seems happier as a Circle Mage then a Warden, right?

@ JFarr74 -- Not... really sure if "happier" is the case. You get letters indicating that she enjoys mentoring child mages and, if you pick the right responses after you save the Templar's near-rape victim from Justice's death sentence and talk her into returning to the Circle, you can have a brief conversation and receive a letter talking about the victim's close friendship to Bethany. In short, Bethany is still cute, lovable Bethany, only in a miserable situation.

If she becomes a Warden, she gets more of a thick skin and becomes somewhat colder, though not enough to convince me that she's isn't in a better place for her long-term. I assume that the Wardens would provide her more security when the Divine sends the troops into Kirkwall to take down the Circle.

The Templar-ally Hawke also has a good Circle Bethany scene when Orsino puts on his ass-hat and you discover the awful truth about Mom...

On my first playthrough, Bethaney joined the circle.

On my second she became a warden.

Although she is colder as a warden, I think its a better place for her than the circle as she becomes a stronger character.

Why is she so much colder as a Warden?  Which path do you guys think is better storywise?

I wouldn't say one is better than the other, it's a matter of personal choice. Bethany seems upset with Hawke in both the Circle and Grey Warden scenerios, either because she's trapped in a life as a Circle mage or because she's living the hard life of a Warden. You can actually see the Circle and Warden Bethany scenes here if you're curious.

A mixture.

~ It adds character
~ It adds drama
~ And I really never liked Bethany

There is no better path. Just personal preference.

That's the point where my role playing mostly is overwritten by metagaming.

Circle Beth isn't abused, sees the life in the circle, get's a new purpose in life and is free when Hawke sides with the mages.

Warden Beth forgives you in the end, thinks that she is doing something useful with the wardens and has the warden protection (whatever that is worth after the templars go rogue) but really gets the nasty variant of the warden side effects and wil never be "normal" like she wanted to be.

Circle mage it is for me Image IPB

I let Carver join the Templars - his constant whingeing was irritating me

Hope he stays there too, but as he's still on my Companions screen (although greyed out) I fear he'll return at some stage :(

She also sees most of her friends get massacred and Orsino, someone she's clearly loyal to, turn into a horrible corpse monster and try to kill her.

Take both Bethany and Anders into the Deep Roads, and then refuse to make her a Warden because she doesn't like the sound of the idea.

or

Make her a Grey Warden whether she likes it or not.  I can't really decide if I like letting her die or making her a Warden the most... both are pretty good options as far as I'm concerned.

Fail.  Not enough rape to make it as a templar.
