That's still a good combo. Actually the Arcane Warrior is the super tank, and Blood Mage is somehow like the normal mage: Vulnerable, fragile and deadly with spell, so that's up to you to make a choice: To be a tank or to be a gruesome Blood Mage. Normally you should focus on magic (provide you spell power and damage) and willpower (provide you mana pool). You can wield shield and weapon (I recommend for arcane warrior) but for the range attack you should use staff like the other mage use to do. For the talent that's also depends on your character building: tank or nuker.

Well actually the Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage is a super build. The Arcane Warrior has aton of buffs that turn you into a tank, but the side effect is that you lose your mana from all of the sustained spells you'll be using. Thats where the BM comes in (A.K.A Blood Mage) With the BM you no longer need mana for spells you now can use hp. So my recommendation is that once you get both classes together stop stacking willpower and start stacking constitution. For my Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Battle Mage in awakening. Its a superman build basically being able to solo everyone and everything. The Battle Mages add I wont speak of since it doesnt refer to your questions. Oh yeah, get Spellweaver, theres no need to rotate your weapons just use that sword and cast your spells when needed. I usually start off with my spells until I use up my mana then start up Blood Magic and dig into the enemy with my sword. The reason for this is that when you have your sword you have to stop and then cast. So its best to cast everything at once. And then get into it with your sword. So yeah. Thats my really long detailed guide for you. If you need more just ask.

It is handy to have both a melee weapon and a staff as a secondary weapon.

Against templars who like to dispel your buffs, you can just use the staff instead of recasting the buffs only to have them dispelled again and still do enough damage to kill them.

It's also handy to have an extra set of hotkeys if not on pc. When you swich weapons, you have a new set of spell hotkeys to pick from. You can have one set that goes better with a melee arcane warrior, and other spells that might benefit from the extra spellpower from a staff.

I went dual wield with my arcane warrior. They have plenty of defense already, and without the weapon+shield talents, there's not much need for more defense. By dual wielding a sword+dagger, you'll kill much faster and won't have to rely on spells as much for damage, and the dexterity needed to equip better daggers will also help with your attack score. With this build, I went 30 dex and max magic, with a few points in constitution.
