Yup - he needs Hawke's help.

If you don't help him, he somehow does it alone . . .or gets help somewhere else, which seems more plausible to me.

...Somehow I can see him coaxing Merrill into helping him.

Anders: I'll give you candy!
Merrill: 'Kay!

I can't see him asking Merrill for help when their conversations tend to focus on how evil he thinks blood magic is (which is amusing, considering that he's technically a Grey Warden). I doubt the writers gave it any focus and simply had Anders gather the ingredients - it's not like Hawke telling Cullen about Anders when he's right there makes any sense, but people in Kirkwall seem to lose common sense when they enter its borders.

Darn. I was really hoping that maybe there would be another option. I was miffed about the fact that my mage got to hang with Carver (who gets some good dialogue with Varric) but then my rogue lives with Bethany for no other reason than to balance your starting team. That's another issue, but I hoped it was the last of the "unpreventables."

Inevitability is defined as Varrick stating to the Seeker:

"Don't remind me, I introduced them". Right at the beginning of Act II, I don't know about anyone else, but in my first PT, that set off all kinds of bells and whistles, especially since, the only character in the DA universe that whined more was Alistair.

However, on another note relative to the topic, how many mages did you help Anders move through the mage underground? I know he didn't show up at either of my doors asking for more help doing it, but did volunteer the information that he had been doing it for some time. Some people seem to think that when you don't have party members in group, they just sit in their home base, letting dust settle on them until they are called.

What infuriated me is that if you say you'll help, he lies and says he's trying to recreate a ritual to separate himself from Justice. Yet once you distract the Grand Cleric....he never mentions the ritual again and you can't ask about it?

First time through I thought this was such a betrayal of Hawke's loyalty and arguably interesting aspect (though I didn't enjoy the actual outcome), but second time through I was just frustrated that nothing really mattered in what I did and that I was just forced to play in an exercise in pointlessness.

DA2 <Start>->POINTLESSNESS<-<End> I tried brushing Anders off in the beginning, hoping there was an option like 'We need to talk -> I think you should leave' but heeeelll no. I mean ignoring him in Act 2 should send a message.

Basicly nothing matters, i mean everything would be solved quicker if that Anders and Arishok were killed day 1, Meredith and Orsino killed, whoever opposes killed which leaves just the Viscount who's ok. Problem solved and they lived happily ever after.
