If you had paid attention, while playing the game, you would notice that she does have her moments and besides. There will always be the so-called "level-headed" characters in RPGs as far as I'm aware. Her sense of humor is just a bit more subtle. It's fine if you don't like the character. Just pointing it out.turian councilor Knockout wrote...
I want to slap Aveline instead cuz i never seen one so bitter, boring and such completely lack of humor it just made me "yawn" through the whole game.
EDIT: Just noticed this is a really old thread.
yeah she had her moments for how long ? a few minutes and rly the where boring as hell even those, those so called "level headed" characters are highly overrated and yes i did pay attention so chose a better word next time i just didn't like it.

I'm in the other department that her head would make a lovely chamber pot.

I don't find her childish or naive at all, really. She's an obsessed mad scientist, sometimes on the absent-minded side, as mad scientists are wont to be. Just instead of a stony castle with a monster strapped to a table in a lightning storm, she's got a tiny hovel with a magic mirror in it. And instead of Meddling in God's Domain, she's Meddling with Dark Arts. Just like any good mad scientist, she's caught up in the exciting 'what if's of her research, and fatally convinced of her own ability to handle any contingencies.
Heck, her own clan plays the role of the pitchfork-wielding mob.

While I liked Merril, I dont see why she deserves special attention over the rest of the cast thus far, almost all of them are generaly worthy of death in most people eyes. Many of the Wardens companions are unremorsful murderers alone.
Maybe make her the new Mairi your saying?

I don't see the point of this thread. You can kill Merrill in DA2.

I do not agree with some peoples view on Merrill, my viewpoint is she is an idiot. Does not matter how nice you are or understand the risks when you use Blood Magic, bottom line is Blood Magic is wrong.
Are you also against Grey Warden mages using blood magic to defeat the darkspawn (as Duncan addresses in the Magi Origin), and the Joining, which is viewed as a form of blood magic?
Cantina wrote...
Merrill may have studied everything there is and “cleansed” the shard. The fact is in order for her to cleanse the shard she associated herself with a demon and used blood magic to do so.
A demon that was trapped inside a totem by ancient elven magic for centuries.
Cantina wrote...
I do not see that as cleansing a shard. Just because the shard was "cleansed" does not mean the mirror is no longer a danger. How dumb can you be to want to restore a mirror that killed your clan mate (and nearly you if you played a Dalish)? Hell she stood right there when Duncan said the mirror was dangerous and he destroyed it. Yes, it would be grand for the Dalish to get their history back but the way Merrill is choosing to go about it is wrong.
The Eluvian was tainted, he destroyed it, and Merrill cleansed a shard and (after extrapolating information from the shard and researching the lore on the Eluvian) attempted to build a new one. I don't see how Merrill is stupid for thinking that an ancient piece of elven technology could fundamentally improve the lives of the elves. The entire premise behind the Dalish focuses on the independent elves' attempts to reclaim their lost lore and culture, which is precisely what Merrill is doing by trying to restore technology that was utilized by the Arlathan elves.
Cantina wrote...
The poor clan is in complete disarray because of Merrill’s actions and she is too blind to see it.
I didn't realize that Merrill having an opinion and going into exile put the men, women, and children of the clan in disarray. I thought that it was Marethari's refusal to leave Sundermount that played a role in that.
Cantina wrote...
I know she is trying to save her clan and the history but she is going about it the wrong way. I refused to help her restore the mirror, gave her a scolding during and after the quest and refused to kill her clan. My character would have killed her for being such an idiot, but, since that option was not available for my character, maybe down the road, Merrill will wise up and not use Blood Magic anymore.
But alas this my opinion on the matter and nothing more.
So while Marethari endangered the entire clan, didn't do the research on the Eluvian that Merrill did, let a demon loose from its imprisonment, told no one about becoming an abomination, tried to kill Hawke and Merrill, and then caused the situation that resulted in the Dalish elves contemplating cold-blooded murder against Hawke and Merrill unless Hawke coddles them instead of telling them the truth... and it's all Merrill's fault?
My Hawke didn't pretend that he knew more about the Eluvian than the person who actually researched it. He was wise enough to realize how ignorant he was about elven technology.

I don't understand people. Merrill us just naive and had the misfortune to encounter blood magic, so what? Its stupid that people are aggressive with her rather than helping her and dusting her off when she falls. She's one of my favorite characters, I enjoy how in your journey she goes from naive about everything to getting lessons from Isabella.
Merrill was my favorite party member for this exact reason--her development. The placement of her dialogue lines across the acts was a strong, strong aspect of Dragon Age II. She cracked me up as well as made me feel for her by turns, and I thought that te scenes in her home with Hawke were some of the best and most cinematic in the game. I'd hate to see her fall to ill, should she make an appearance in Dragon Age III (which I would not be uninterested in).

Merrill was naive about human culture - but some people seem to confuse her culture shock with a foreign society and treat her as though she's ignorant about everything else, when that simply isn't true. I don't understand why some people treat blood magic like it's the Dark Side of the Force. This is Dragon Age, not Star Wars. Blood magic is a tool that can be used for good or bad purposes, which depends entirely on the user. Merrill used blood magic for several years, and never abused her abilities. This isn't an isolated case, either. Some Grey Warden mages use blood magic to give them an edge against the darkspawn, some apostates use it because templars can't nulify blood magic like they can ordinary magic, and even Finn used blood magic to locate the Eluvian in the Dragonbone Wastes.

Merrill's relationship with Isabela was really nice. You see how the two care about each other.
As for Hawke being aggressive, i.e. Rivalry with Merrill, I think it's ridiculous that Hawke - who is as naive about elven culture as Merrill is about human society - would condemn Merrill for things he is completely ignorant about. The plight of the elves? The centuries long decline of the People? The potential of the Eluvians to possibly improve the lives of the Dalish clans? Merrill extrapolated information from the shard and studied the lore on the Eluvian, while Hawke did none of those things - not to mention how horrible Rivalry Hawke comes across to Merrill. It's like one of those bad scifi/fantasy stories where the human tells the non-human how he's right on the sole basis of his human values, and nothing more.

You can do rivalry with Merrill so her tribe doesn't die
Rivalry isn't necessary to keep the clan alive.

I think what he means is that the option to keep the clan alive gives rivalry if she's not maxed. The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...
