I'm contemplating a Mage playthrough, and sidestepping this particular plothole through something of a self-imposed challenge, like not using ranged magic in broad daylight within Kirkwall.

This obviously renders my mage weakened in a lot of fights('specially the Arishok duel, no idea what I'm gonna do there), so I was wondering if you had some sugestions as to how I could make this work?

I think i can get away with the melee-staff combat, but no flashy spells.

Make a buffer/healer and use haste a lot?

Now, that just sounds boring.

You could always just use the void hammer (no class restrictions) and beat ppl to death with it?
Since you'll have to pump your strength up quite a bit to equip it you could also go bloodmage, pump con and equip warrior armour. That way you'll be a boring cleric healing/buffing as well as hitting people in the face with a hammer haha

In the duel it could be interesting as you could self-buff via haste, arcane shield (not sure if rock-armour and elemental weapons is considered too flashy). Then while you're out and about outside kirkwall (no limitations) you can use the rather overpowered zero-cooldowns on your fireballs/winter's grasps/chain lightnings etc. and rain down magical chaos on your enemies.

If you're into the whole roleplay thing and don't mind exploiting little quirks in the game I suppose that could work for you :)
