Ok...I realize that ME, and to a lesser extent ME2, have been out for awhile. I blame EA for their diabolical
strategy of giving anyone who bought Dragon Age 2 a free copy of ME2
for my subsequent addiction to these games, which far outstrip the
couple of playthroughs I did of DA and DA2.
My question is - as a relative newcomer - is there any way to improve how squad members react in the original ME? I don't have this problem in ME2, but in ME it seems like neither squadmate every moves to the points I send them, nor do they stay there once I do. They constantly wander in front of me, charge out into the middle of fire, etc.
This
wasn't as much of an issue in the first playthrough, but now that I'm
experimenting with different classes and moving up the difficulty scale,
it's really, REALLY annoying. They NEVER do what I tell them. They don't attack when I target something and say attack, most of the time they are "blocked" when I want to use special skills, they don't move when I say move...
It is driving me insane...am I doing something wrong? I don't remember it being so much of a problem on "normal" the first playthrough.

They're almost completely hopeless in ME1. Your best bet is to take control of their powers and avoid investing in projectile based powers (like Carnage). The squadmates will often just fire their Carnage into a crate.

I agree. I'm on a new playthrough with an insanity adept, and it was pretty rough to start... But now that I've leveled up, I pretty much ignore my squadmates. I don't even generally use their powers unless I want a sabotage or something... It's best to focus on disabling powers, I've found damping and sabotage to be my best friends, so I can stop everything else.

Two things to help with ME1 Squad, at least in my opinion they do....
1) Try to take the mostly combat oriented members, that way the are a little less likely to take dirtnaps, ie Wrex and Ashley. Though later on with decent gear most will be pretty tough, the thing is get the decent gear if you want them to live.
2) Give one squad mate fire ammo, and the other poison ammo, this lets one fire green and the other red, so you know who to try to move when they are either shooting a box or more often the back of your shield making it hard to use sniper rifles are just being annoying seeing the flares on screen.
