She is approximately the same age as Tamlen and the Dalish Grey Warden.

Isn't that like saying "She's the exact age that she is."?

It rules out her being 15 or 30.

I took it as saying, "She's not 14 for the love of all that's holy!"

She has the facial markings, so that makes her an adult. And that is sufficient for me.

How long do elves live anyway in the dragon age? I know they used to be immortal but what is their reduced life span?

City elves live about as long as city humans. Dalish live a bit longer.

Um... no.

That clears things up nice... waitaminute.

I doubt they would have you romance Merrill if she wasn't 18 or over considering your character is an adult.

14 at the start of the game
+ 1 year until you meet her
+ 3 years until you sleep with her

Thank you. I figured Merrill was actually older than Hawke. Image IPB

So she was 14 or under but had blood writing when the keeper sent her into a monster infested cave with only the dalish warden to look for Tamlen?
That makes no sense.

But it's mathematically possible, which is all Maria's saying.

14 is merely the lower bound. She could be any age, but the absolute minimum is 14 at game start.

So when you meet her you would be flirting with a 15 year old when your hawke is over 18?
No one would write that level of creepy into the game.

Taking what has been posted by a bioware person. Merrill is more than likely either the same age as Hawke or a bit older, because the Dalish Grey Warden was an adult by the time she/he left the clan. Merrill was also an adult during Origins. So basically stating that Merrill was 14 when the game started and 15 when she met Hawke is not only creepy but disgusting. Plus even though Merrill comes off as naive and what not that is due to how she was raised according to DA 2. She didn't spend time with her fellow elven learning things other elves learned, she was studying to become a Keeper, her nose in a book and not much else. Pretty much she is a social awkward character.

I myself was like Merrill growing up, nose in a book, couldn't relate to anyone around me even though we were the same age. To my peers I was emotionally younger than my physical age. Merrill is the same, physically an adult but emotionally stunted due to how she grew up.

Sheesh, it was not my intention to start a gutter-level, lockdown-worthy thread. I was actually hoping she was older than Hawke.

As Hawke is anywhere between age 20-25 when leaving Lothering, Merrill could be older than Hawke.  I RP Hawke as age 20, so she is.

Unless they were George RR Martin. In which case, they'd let a 30 year old Hawke deflower a 14-year-old Merrill on their wedding night, and then kill her brother by dipping his head in a pot of molten gold.

I don't think Merrill is 14 at the beginning of the game, but fantasy is not obliged to adhere to modern social norms unless it's in a modern setting.

I'm not sure how that is creepy and disgusting. Hawke can be 19 at the beginning of the game.

No, in the above scenario, she's 15 when she gets to Kirkwall, 16 when you meet her. That makes her 13-14 in the Dalish orign.

She gets to Kirkwall when the Blight breaks out, and that doesn't happen years before the Dalish origin but roughly at the same time, if i'm not mistaken?

"approximately"

Anyway, for what's worth, the DAO Toolset has Merrill's character age stated as "25". Now mind you, that "age" is actually guideline for the VO director, to give them idea what sort of person to look for, and as such doesn't have to and often doesn't reflect the actual age of the character in question* Still, it's quite easily possible to throw in another --unmentioned-- clan gathering worth of time (10 years) between the one at which she was handed to Mahariel's clan and the one which she attended herself (or after the one which she attended herself) effectively padding her calculated age by extra 10 years... which would bring her close to that "25" in the Toolset.

It'd also mean she's ~28-30 by the time she goes to visit Hawke in the mansion.

*) the notes on her appearance say "pretty elven girl who is wise beyond her years" e.g., which feels like something that'd be used to describe someone quite younger.

And it isn't going to conform to legal age limits of certain countries. Saying having her under eighteen is creepy because Hawke sleeps with her and that's illegal in the US or wherever does not apply in a country like the UK, where it's legal for over 16's.

You actually got it wrong.

It would be a 18-year-old Carver deflowering an 18-year-old Bethany, and then trying to kill Merrill by defenestration.

Shouldn't that be 30 year-old Leandra deflowering 14-year old Carver, while Merrill is a blood puddle on the street after having defenestrated Bethany fall onto her head? (the deed obviously done by Leandra to remove the competition to Carver's pouch of sweets)

Guys, I'm referring to the events in the books. Not making random lolz.

In the books, twins sleep together and one pushes a child out the window when they're caught. A horselord has sex with a very young woman and later kills her brother by sticking his head in liquid gold.

What are you talking about?

If Merrill is 14 at the beginning of the game, she's 18 when she and Hawke have sex. That conforms to the legal age limits of all countries.

How is having sex with a 18-year-old inherently creepy and disgusting?
