*MAJOR SPOILERS*

So I had decided all along to side with the Mages (but I had my gnawing doubts) basically because of Bethany (I did not want her killed or imprisoned at the Circle tower).

I must say that after Anders did his terrorist attack I had very serious doubts gnawing at me. It's almost as if I had condoned an 9/11 attack for "the Greater Good". I was on the verge of siding with the Templars only because of what he had done (a Guy Fawke's plot).

All along the game I've seriously disliked Sebastian's self-righteousness. But this was the only ocassion when I actually agreed with his comments 100%. Killing innocents (Grand Cleric Elthina) simply did not justify Mage's plights. The end does NOT justify the means. In fact it only went to prove Meredith's banter (not to mention Orsino's little show...).

Anyway, back on topic, Sebastian just disappeared and did not fight on my side taking with him the best longbow of the game (Jackal's).

I take it he fights on your side only if you side with Templars, right? So he's the only companion that turns on you on siding with the Mages (because Fenris can be persuaded to fight on your side).

Btw I spared Zevran and did not see him either fighting on my side. Did anyone else see him fighting alongside him on the final battle? And Nathaniel Howe?

Nope. If you kill Anders, Sebastian will side with you. His sympathies tend to be with the Templars, but he severely disapproves of Meredith's idea of "justice". Because of that, you can convince him to side with you for the mages although he will openly express doubts.

Thanks Polaris. I thought you couldn't get him to fight on your side against Mages.

Yea, I was able to keep Sebastian in my party during the end battle despite siding with the mages because I killed Anders. He has no issue with the rest of the mages, based on what he says to Meridith, I think it's something like "Why are you condemning all the mages for this when the man who committed the act is right here! Kill him!"

Yup Sebastian will join you on the mage side without Hesitation. In fact he's the only person following Anders act that says something intelligent when Meredith starts talking about annullment. "We have the person responsible right here!"

Because of his focus on punishing the person responsible, the only decision he cares about (rightfully so) is how you deal with Anders.

Yes Anders is his only concern.

Though it's more fun letting him have his hissy fit screaming about coming back with an army
to kill you.

"This would be who's army, the city you abandoned 9+ years ago and have no links to at all?"
I could not decide if it was bad consistency or delusions of grandeur.

It would be funny if Sebastian came back with his Army, only to find Hawke teamed with the Warden and brought the entire combined ARMY OF FERELDAN of Dwarves, Elves, Mages, Humans, etc to fight them.

Other than for roleplaying purposes....I'd rather have Seb and his army than side with Anders over anything.

Even if Sebastian can raise an army (kind of doubtful since he has to be a rival) I can only imagine his reaction when he finds out the entire group has left Kirkwall.

Sadly, almost no one likes Sebastian, save for people who like writing about shameboners on the kmeme.

Expect him to show up in the first expansion pack as everyone's favorite companion.

I like Sebastian just fine.

It's Anders I don't care for. Otherwise, I really like Hawke's companions.

I think Sebastians problem is being too optional & one-dimensional. I know that Anders & Fenris can be one-dimensional at times but they have skills to make them stand out as party members. Sebastian (to me anyway) tends to play a poor second best to Varric as a ranged fighter.
I think more could have been done with his character but as DLC we can't have it all.

I'd just like to say, frustratemyself, that Seb's twice the archer Varric is. Sebastian's Royal Archer line is superior to Varric's Bianca line and Seb can hold any bow whereas Varric's left with the moderately useful Bianca.

He probably is quite a good damage dealer given the high dexterity he starts with. I've always been put off by the low cunning making him unable to pick a lock to save his life and that you don't recruit him until act 2. I should give him more of a chance though since I've got the lock bash mod installed.

True, Varric's a great lockpick. But you can always Maker's Sigh Seb into being a lockpick who can hold those high end bows which deal major damage.

True. Can I blame having a serious blonde moment and forgetting about using Maker's Sigh?

Sure.

And I'll give you the fact that Varric's awesome and always great to have around, which Seb isn't sometimes.

I love Sebastian, and I'm delighted that we're going to be seeing him again some time. My first Hawke rivalmanced him but spared Anders, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that might turn out.

In addition to being able to equip awesome bows, Sebastian also has more survivability than Varric. Several of his unique tree abilities make him more durable than the dwarf, and Guardian Angel gives him another 'get out of trouble fast' button to push.

Bianca is always a pretty good dps bow.  Seb can use a few better ones, but you have to actually aquire them.  Not to mention the best bow is fire damage, meaning many enemies are highly resistant if not flat out immune to it.  But most importantly... Seb isn't available until Act II whereas Varric is one of the earliest NPCs to join.  I don't know about you but I spend roughly half my time of a playthrough in Act I, so that's pretty significant.

As for his personality...  I wish I had a spell to turn Sebastian's bones into lava.  Preachy, hypocritical, self-righteous, arrogant, snobby.  Varric is funny as hell.  The only thing funny about Sebastian is watching him freak when foster mommy goes boom.  You know, the woman who said "death is NEVER justice" and for whom he swears to destroy an entire city to get revenge on one man, a man standing barely out of arm's reach of him whom he lets go because he doesn't have the balls to opposed Hawke without an army at his back?  God I hate Sebastian.

Well... really, how would Hawke react if a superior told her that she had to let Quentin join the party?

Well to be honest, my Hawke would just go ahead and kill him without pestering his superior to do it for him.Posted Image

But sometimes the game gets in the way of revenge. I tried for two games to kill Amon Jerro in NWN2, and the game kept forcing him in my party.

If Leandra was letting her subordinates run wild with murdering, raping, and tranquilling, my Hawke would've never met Quentin because he'd have killed Leandra himself.

Fenris will defend the mages, Aveline will fight against the "righteous" order her husband belonged to, even Anders himself will help execute the Right of Annulment under certain circumstances (albiet apparently bugged ones at the moment).  Sebastian is the ONLY companion that has a "my way or the highway, where I hope I can hire someone else to do my dirty work" mentality.  But it's not even him leaving that bothers me.  It's the fact he wants to destroy the entire city in order to get vengeance for the death of one woman whom constantly chastised him for seeking vengeance.  Cowardly, cowardly hypocrite.

Honestly, I can understand Sebastian's reaction to Hawke's refusal to kill Anders. Grand Cleric Elthina was his beloved mother figure, and he revered her as a spiritual guide and mentor. To see her senselessly and brutally murdered must have been horrifying.

However, it's his vow to invade Kirkwall that bothers me. In that respect, is he no better than the monster that he believes Anders to be? I can understand his desire for vengeance and retribution, but does the lives of countless innocents make it all worthwhile?
