I'm thinking through the BioWare games, and I honestly think the only one where the LIs for the dudes got saddled with more crazy issues was NWN.  Aribeth was pretty out there.

Alistair seems less crazy than Morrigan or Leliana to me.  And Jacob seems about the stablest of the ME romances.

OK, fine.  Lemme rephrase--between the LIs worth romancing, NWN was the only one where the dudes got saddled with more crazy 

And I'd quibble on Alistair being less crazy.  He deflects a lot of his issues with humor, and his romance can end very, very badly just like Morrigan's.

Definitely Aveline.  She's the only character who has her head firmly screwed on straight.  Well, aside from Bethany, but she's way too young.

Ooo, easy one!  I'd totally romance Avaline if I was gay and could go for her.  I loved the teasing/tolerating dynamic that developed between them over the course of the game.  She was absolutely my Hawke's bestest buddy. 
I don't really like either of the actual in-game choices.    Isabella makes me laugh, but she seems a little one-note (I'm willing to accept that she's probably a lot deeper if romanced and I just don't know it yet), and Merril has some cute lines but is utterly unattractive as a person to me.  She acts like a stubborn annoying teenager.  Gah!

I wonder if this has anything to do with the stereotypical feminine desire to "fix" troubled men (not that that ever works IRL, but it's a classic trope.  Florence Nightingale syndrome as romantic ideal). 

Now that I look back at other BioWare games though, I don't think this is generally true:  Kaiden seems more stable than Liara or Ashley; Alistair and Zevron are far more trustworthy and reliable than either Morrigan or Lilliana, the craziest ME2 LI by far is Jack.  So maybe not… 

I suppose what it all actually comes down to is that there needs to be an impediment to the romance in order to make it an interesting pursuit.  Craziness and drama are fun.  In real life, I met my boyfriend through work, went out for drinks, discovered we had similar interests and values, eventually moved in together - BORING STORY.  What I want from reality and what I want to see/read/play in my fiction are two completely different things.

She's the only DA female I can possibly fathom having a real-life romance with.

If I swung more over to the other side, I would also add Ser Cauthrien, and Aveline (both whom I really admire as strong female characters) to the list. But in the game, I'd usually go for someone more adventurous like Isabella.

For the rest, Merrill is a little too innocent that I can't imagine fulfilling any role beyond "The Wise, Older Sister", and Bethany reminds me of my actual sister.   Morrigan, though entertaining, hilarious, and useful, is more of an acquantaince or a distant friend.
