This and combined with people around this individual knows about it but tolerate it since the unpossesed mage was a much less likable person, from their point of view, it was an improvement. Could borrow some traits from Isabela in behaviour.

I'd kind of think it'd be cool to see a magister..that used to be a slave.
basically a certain magister wants as his heir a mage that's also his child. But none of his legitimate children ended up mages, but he's fathered some with slaves over the years, and he tracks down the ones he's sold off and finds out that one did in fact have magic, he takes them back to make them his heir, barely starts to teach them..and then croaks somehow.
And now there's a barely trained mage slave/magister that somehow joins the party.

Came to think of it, Jowan was intended as a companion in Origins but was cut. Maybe throwing him in this time. Give him personal quests about making things right again and tracking down and liberate Lily.
