Their importance could be "nothing" more than how some of the US or French rebels couldn't pick each other out of a crowd but they were still hugely influential to each other's lives.
IMO it's a mistake not to have the story revolve around specific PC's. I do hope the devs realize how important the attachment between PC and player is, to the continued support from at least some fans. (players who do not like to carry on with the same character would always have the option to create a new, so it's a win-win)
I can see your point. I'm all for a character per trilogy, like Mass Effect. But I also don't mind a new story each time. I'd rather see a totally new character in DA3 than Hawke shoe horned into the DA3 story with some kind of "you got bumped on the head" or evil magic stole his skills or something.
