As is common knowledge, Leandra Hawke, the player's mom, dies during the Act 2 Quest, "All That Remains". If you don't know that, then you shouldn't be in the Spoilers forum.

As may not be common knowledge, there was originally a way for the player to save her that was removed from a myriad of reasons.

The question I would like to ask anyone who knows is how the player would do this.

I mean, there's no way to save her in the finished retail game and no functionality will ever be restored, right? So is there any harm in letting us know what the player could have done in the alpha/beta that would have saved her? I'm asking only for curiosity's sake.

You never know, one day the toolset may run to the rescue.

It would probably involve help from Gascard Du Pois but I'm not in the know so.....

Yeah it would have to have involved using Du Puis to get to Quentin before he lopped off Leandra's head.

Actually, I think you misunderstood. This was never cut. We never had a way to save your mother. The question came up at one point whether we should add a way to save her, and we considered it. There would need to be a heavy cost to saving her -- something that the player would not be willing to pay without question -- or it would become the only "right" solution to the plot. We couldn't decide on a satisfying way to make that work, so no change was made.

I would have thought something along the lines of, say, sacrificing Aveline would work.

I would have had the Arishok rescue her and then say something like "A service for a service Hawke."

I do not like the Arishok, nor do I like the way the Qun operates however if they did something like that it would influence me, especially if the timing coincided with having to make a decision to turn over Isabela.

It seems like it would have been a good opportunity for some demonic temptation - which otherwise Hawke seems remarkably immune to.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post.

So it was never implimented at any level? That's goes against what I had picked up around the forums. But it probably was just misinformation. Do you, perhaps, remember any of the 'heavy costs' that were suggested? I only ask because I find the things left out of games (either being removed during development or merely considered but never included) very interesting. If you don't, that's fine, too.

Thank you for your time.

Suggestions included:
  • Sacrifice a follower. Your romance, if you had one. Or whoever had the most frienship.
  • Make the player become a serial killer. You'd have to murder a number of innocent and sympathetic characters in order to restore your mother to life.
  • Let Merrill sustain the spell (possibly costing her attribute points) and keep Leandra in her horrible patchwork zombie state in a back room of your mansion.

*eyes narrow in suspicion*

One of the devs wouldn't have happened to played Animamundi eh?

And really those suggestions sound better than what we got. :(

Have to say I'm glad none of those choices were included.

I like Beerfish's idea with the Arishok but this one here is where it most likely would have gone.  Especially if Hawke is a mage how could you resist a demons tempation if it meant saving mom.

Creepy! Though I probably would have gone with there being a price you had to pay to use Gaspard's Blood Magic to find her. Since it seemed that route would let you get to her hours sooner than the Gamelin way (which required nightfall)

I disagree. DA2 didn't exactly have a ton of choices, and this one would have been extremely difficult and would have had lasting ramifications that would affect the rest of the game, and possibly future games in the series. It's ashame this wasn't implemented.

I'm getting awfully tired of the notion that there must not be happy ending, it must be a choice between a crap sandwich and a **** salad for it to be properly gritty.

I would have loved playing a Norman Bates, sitting down with mumsy in bib and tucker for a candlelit dinner followed by a brisk waltz and then sit her in a chair by the window looking over the city while she murmurs for braaaaiiiins.

That last one actually would have been acceptable as a temporary solution.

"Yes....you can shake hands with my mother.....wait! Damn, Bodahn, where is that needle and thread!"

"You want to meet my mother? Ummm...well she is a multifaceted woman."

"Gamlen! When I told mother you had married that cross dresser at the Rose she went to pieces!"

"Can mom come out for tea? Ummm...she's working on a patchwork quilt in her room."

"Dog! Come back here with that!"

So basically what you're saying is that it was never really an option...
First one could have worked for me. Sacrifice Anders and the game ends at the end of Act 2 after defeating the Arishok! Game of the Year awards for everyone!
