In DA:O elves seem poor, weak and a pathetic shadow of what they were and usually are in other fiction. They arent as beautifull as the traditional elves and they arent immortal in DA:O? Though they seem to still be more powerfull magic users they arent THAT far beyond humans.

Were bioware sick of elven demigod ness and arrogance and based that on their decision on why to make elves what they are in DA?

If Irenicus took a portal to the dragon age:origins realm i bet it would take 2 seconds before some humans started bullying him. would probarly end in their demise but in DA:O they would probarly still laugh at him as they got incinerated just for him being an elf.

They're leaning quite heavily on the Elves presented in the Witcher books, and I have to say it's a breath of fresh air.

As an Elf fan even I was bored to tears with the same old caricature of the Elves, now I get to be a human-hating, embittered City Elf with no compassion for it's former oppressors.

Great choice in my opinion.

I can't get used to bearded Elves though.... that's one step too far.

That's one of the things I like about DA:O-it takes common stereotypes and feeds them to the archdemon.

I like how elves are portrayed in DA:O. I'm so thoroughly sick of the stereotypical image of immortal, mostly-wise and powerful beings in tune with nature, that I tend to avoid RPGs featuring elves (and dwarves, and orcs) these days.

I think that Bioware did this to make elves less stereotypical, and I count that a very good thing indeed!

Beautiful and powerful.

And it's hardly original. World of Warcraft turned Elves into evil, mortal, divine-power-stealing drug addicts. The Witcher used pretty much the same idea in DAO: Elves living in slums, subjugated by humans, with the exception of the clans living outside in the forest, who shoot and kill anyone that comes near them.

Because fantasy tropes have to be trite and played-out, right?

I think it's nice to see typical fantasy fare given a nice shake. Dwarves are still boring, however.

Also, political dwarves are fun.

If you actually payed atttention to the story you would find out that the DOA Elves were in fact once like you said.

And have some cheese with that wine.

I love the elves in DA, just wish they were taller. Its nice to see something different for once. Here's hoping this becomes a trend in games, bending the trope and maybe breaking the trope.

The size thing comes from D&D which relied very loosely on Tolkien and incorporated many elements from Scandinavian lore. In Tolkien's writings elves were majestic creatures, immortals who walked the earth. They didn't have pointy ears and they weren't small either. In fact most humans (except those with elven blood) would have looked uncouth and unimpressive in comparison.

Anyway, my city elf rogue is both beautiful and powerful even with the pointy ears and the small stature.

Well tolkien didnt invent the elfs, even though most fantasy concepts use his image to describe them.

I like new flavours and the dragon age world tast alot like fresh grinded cinnamon.

Why do humans always have to be the crappest playable species, for people to find fantasy interesting?

Eh? Human noble is the best origin in the game.

Because frankly, humans are dull.
But no. Humans are inspired a lot by human history. Which is logical. Whereas Dwarves and Elves are completely made up and thus have more fantasy elements which is appealing to a lot of people. I personally love the standard elf stereotype.

I always try to figure a way out how Dwarves ever got to be sentient creatures, if they truly come from underground. You know... they would have to been moles or something at the start...

Bioware is hardly the first to knock elves down a few pegs.

Hell, even Warcraft 3 made elves beat down, murdered, and generally enslaved by humanity...

As a elf fan I find DA's take on them refreshing.

I really like the way elves are presented in the game myself. It truly gives you the sense that they are at their twilight.

I'm just glad they didn't include half-elves/dwarfs/mubari. I've always hated the cross-breeding nonsense that pervades some fantasy fiction.

"Aha, I am a half-(insert race of choice)... I have all of your strengths and none of your weaknesses!"

Yawn.

I really like the elf-setting in DA:O. Elves get more interesting IMHO and it takes away the tree-hugging-flower-loving-stereotypes. It's mouch easier to relate to elves in this setting and it keeps them enough strange and outsiders to have a rpg-touch.

Elves are still the most innately magical sentient of the races on DAO, so thats still tried and true.

The change is odd, interesting, and somewhat refreshing. I think the orphanage was a bit over-kill on the whole "woe is me" version of elves in DAO lore, however. Getting sent to an orphanage is bad enough.

To me the Dalish still retain some of that haughty taughty were so much better then everyone else.  Just might be me.
Also I kinda enjoyed Dwarfs being poitical backstabbers also. I can't think of a time that was true about dwards. They usually have a king, honor honor honor, and beer.
