I get the greatest kick from elves getting busted down a few pegs in Witcher and DA:O. A wise, immortal, nearly all-powerful but overall static race is bound to experience a horrific downfall sooner or later; it's just in "traditional" fantasy settings we never get to see it.

My favorite "kick the elf" scene so far is from the Mage origin story. Normally, when a human mage encounters an elf mage, asskissery ensues - oh, wise elf mage, you are surely more magical than I will ever be, would you share your wisdom with a pitiful mortal me. It was wicked funny to say something to the tune of "holy crap, an elf studying magic? You mean you ******-eared midgets can READ?"

Oh yes, and it is quite satisfying that humans are TALLER than elves in DA:O.

As an Elf fan even I was bored to tears with the same old caricature of the Elves, now I get to be a human-hating, embittered City Elf with no compassion for it's former oppressors.

This.
Except I play a Dalish Elf. Same principle tho ;)

To me the Dalish still retain some of that haughty taughty were so much better then everyone else.  Just might be me.

Well, following the thousand years of oppression and enslavement by Humans, the Elven race *as a whole* lost their immortality, and much of their cultural history and identity -- the difference between City Elves and the Dalish is that the Dalish are actively trying to regain what they lost, and they're extremely protective of what little they've found thusfar. I don't think they're haughty -- they're just very protective of their people and culture, and determined to never let what happened with the Humans happen again.

Beautifull, immortal, powerfull, wise, in tune with nature - that's how I like my elves. Well, I pretty much like all elves, even the DA:O ones.

B.t.w. - since when is arrogance their stereotypical trait?

I liked it, especially now that elves are shorter, where they are usually longer. Break the stereotype!

no but really - it's the first time i have considered playing an elf because it seems to be really interesting and i usually despise elves for being too spotless and boring

Well, they still are quite very close to the stereotypes in DAO, at least the Dalish Elves are, the City Elves obviously less so, but in the end they were extremely powerful according to the lore many generations before the Blight occurring in the game's events, from what I understand both the Elves and the Dwarf had their respective moments of world-spanning empire glory and richness, just imagine the Dalish Elves established all across Thedas, give the City Elves a few generations to recapture their origins and you pretty much end up having stereotyped Elves à-la Lord of the Rings all over again.

Bah! What I wish someone would have the guts to do in a fantasy world is make frigging slimeball HUMANS a minority!

WHY do humans always have to be the major race in all frigging fantasy worlds?

Come on already...

Humans are cruddy... I guess authors and gamedevelopers don't have the guts and think the people buying their stuff will not like being toild that they *humans as we all are* are the lowest of the bunch with NOTHING *not even diversity which is also ALWAYS thrown in as a human trait* to speak for them...

MAke humans the race on the endangered list...

Make a world with mostly Dwarves or elves... With humanity being on recess... Past their prime...

now THAT would be a welcome sight and something bold!

Everyone saying elves are so stuck in their roles what the huck is HUMANS in every single game out there???

Humans should be endangered.... Shortlived, stupid *if ye've met the average human outside You room, You know this* and prone to violence against themselves primarily...

If elves or dwarves or Orcs or whatever actually existed for real, we'd be gone...

There, food for thought...

I agree with Baalzie on the respect that it's always 'human are on the rise, their time has come!" bollocks we always get more than anything else, and I think the elves as they are portrayed in DA:O actually helps to move it away from that. Normally elves are portrayed as powerful but also willingly allowing their race to step aside for the humans, with those that don't want to give up on the power or even existance being portrayed as bad, whereas if this were to happen to humans they are expected to fight for their existence. In DA:O, however, we got elves who, while they have been obliterated, raped and beaten up are still clinging on despite the humans' best efforts to the contrary, and wouldn't be surprised if it ends up the humans finding themselves being relegated when the elves suddenly rise back to prominence...

Beautiful and powerful.

And it's hardly original. World of Warcraft turned Elves into evil, mortal, divine-power-stealing drug addicts. The Witcher used pretty much the same idea in DAO: Elves living in slums, subjugated by humans, with the exception of the clans living outside in the forest, who shoot and kill anyone that comes near them.

Warcraft copied Warhammer nothing original there... In fact the whole warcraft thing is a big rip-off of warcraft

that's false... In most D&D setting elves are shorters... drow are even shorter, only in Forgotten Realms they are the same height as human

There is an elvish version of what happened between elves and humans that led to the exalted march, and there is also a chantry version. Both versions are biased, especially the elves' one. If you get the codex entry for the human version, there are some details the elves left out, indicating the elves may not be so innocent. Elvish-led genocide and abduction, of humans, inspired by a belief in elvish superiority; is mentioned as a CAUSE for the exalted march. I am sure humans commited their share of barbarity but elves must have commited evil and lethal acts under the guise of 'educating' or 'thinning out' lesser peoples like human commoners. Both races are flawed in DA and this is good.

If elves are truly immortal, then how could a 'lesser' race like humans really take that away? How come dalish elves who live outside human rule, have not reclaimed immortality or glory? If elves truly were perfect, they should have innate qualities that help them reclaim that glory, but even elves who live outside human rule have not. And elves in alienages are there voluntarily, because living in poverty is better than being slain by darkspawn. And it is primarily human blood that is spilt (of the surface races) protecting Ferelden's settlements from Darkspawn.

Well, now the elves have an actual reason to hate humans, rather than just "they live shorter".

I likes it.

Must have? Why must have?
And there is big difference between jsut hating someone and thingking oneself ones better.

Actually, if you talk with some of the daelish elves in the game, they will tell you that their lifespan is increasing.

Tbh I love elves I will always play them but I lovvvvve what bioware did to them. City elf origin alone was by far the most compelling gameplay.

I'm still hoping that one day someone will make a fantasy RPG where the elves are like Santa elves, Keebler Elves, Rice Crispy Elves, Shoe Maker elves... I think you get my drift.

In DA:O elves seem poor, weak and a pathetic shadow of what they were and usually are in other fiction. They arent as beautifull as the traditional elves and they arent immortal in DA:O? Though they seem to still be more powerfull magic users they arent THAT far beyond humans.

Were bioware sick of elven demigod ness and arrogance and based that on their decision on why to make elves what they are in DA?

If Irenicus took a portal to the dragon age:origins realm i bet it would take 2 seconds before some humans started bullying him. would probarly end in their demise but in DA:O they would probarly still laugh at him as they got incinerated just for him being an elf.

It worked for The Witcher.

Actually I think this is all very much a part of the world Bioware have created, the elves believe themselves to have once been the magical, immortal demi-gods of LotR stile fiction, but it's also part of the story they lost most of there power at some point and where enslaved by humans. Of course it's possible elves mythical past is just that, an elven myth to make them feel better. I like this it makes the world of Dragon Age distinct from generic fantasy worlds.

  'Haha! You're an ugly knife-ear!'
'You fool! You insolent fool! I shall destroy you!'
'Nana, the (rather tall) midget got a temper!'
'DIE!'

Oh, I'd romance Bodhi so hard. I'd romance her all night long.

I kinda doubt their power was just a myth.

The Arcane Warrior specialization hints otherwise.

I'm going to comment some things, but I don't quote the original posters.

Short elves - It's fun how you say that "finally they are shorter than humans". In many gameworlds the elves ARE shorter than humans. This was nothing unusual to me.

Lost immortality Dalish elves have explenation how and why they lost immortality (and I think they could still die of a wound, just not of an old age - how they could have been conquered). Also, Dalish say themselves that they already live a little longer than humans and the Alienage elves.
