Are we that stupid?

I saved my friend the other day. He was visiting and praising Dragon Age Origins, which he bought only recently, and like me he absolutely loved the game. He knew I had DA2 and that I hate it, but to do him a favor and save him from any nagging thoughts on "what if I would like DA2 anyway" I showed him the gameplay.

After having finished a standard mission in five-ten minutes, with some parachuting enemies dropping into the battle from nowhere, and the combat moving at a pace twice as fast as it's humanly possible to move, while clicking the "awesome" button to make the enemies explode ever so nicely. I noticed is face growing pale. Then after having told him that I knew that area very well, because I had visited it several times before littered with other kinds of enemies, and after I'd told him that it is not possible to speak with companions when I want to, AND after showing him the very populated city of kirkwall, and telling him a bit about the -bad- story, I knew I had saved him from making the same mistake as the one I did - Which is buying this game.

As I told him: "As far as I am concerned, DA2 never happened, it doesn't exist, it has no connection to Dragon Age Origins, its a mistake, and it should be forgotten asap."

Now, what I dont get is that on these forums, where I am far from the only one feeling this way about this faliure of a game, I see people, who have the same gripes as I do, WAITING for a DLC to come out. Are we really that stupid as consumers? We buy something we end up hating because we think its a bad product, and still -some- of us wants to invest more money into this thing?

I wonder why? Is it a hope that a DLC will fix all the things that is wrong with DA2? That Bioware will miraculously turn this game 180 degrees and suddently make it good? The chances of that is like buying an old wreck of a car and think that if you put on new tires, you'll get a hot rod.

I dont get it, why would you buy a DLC if you dont like this game? (for those of you who like the game, fair enough if you want to spend money) Why support a company with more money if you think they've failed?

EDIT: Funny how many of the comments given below sounds like they were in the room with my friend and I by telling me that I did not give my friend a fair chance to make his own oppinion. Well, to give all the troubled minds some ease, let me state that my friend is perfectly able of forming his own oppinion, and the reason why I did not describe in precise detail how we explored the game together, going through its good and bad sides, is because this topic is really not about this. Let me also state that nor my friend, any animals, or anything living for that matter, were harmed during the demonstration.

Well good thing your friend had you over his shoulder pointing out all the stuff you hated for him. Sometimes we need to save our friends from forming their own opinions. True story.

Friends don't let friends drive drunk......or play DA2.

To the OP, yes BW and EA are counting on folks being that stupid.  I like to think that gamers aren't actually that dumb, but I get proven wrong on that point quite often. Appearance Packs for all!!! :wizard:

Hehe, it might sound like that. I gave him a fair presentation of the game, showed him the graphics, which we agreed on looked better to some extend, and some of the other stuff that could be considered improvements.

Nice of you to pass judgement though, not having been there. :)

is this thread about your experience with your friend or about DLC? kinda hard to know what this is about

about your friend: should've just told him to rent it if possible, if not possible just wait until the game is bargain bin price if you're not sure, i know i've hated games before that my friends have liked... it's not worth arguing against

about the DLC: it really depends, imo the DAO DLC was really bad for the most part and a vast step down from the game itself, whereas the DLC for ME2 actually improved a lot on that game (LOTSB is better than ME2 as a whole)

i already felt ripped off buying dlc for the first game, so there's only anywhere to go but up <_<

I had gripes with the game...but if they bring out some epic choice / consequence less final fantasty / rise of the argonauts and more dragon age based expansion. Yeah. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and pick it up.

Fool me twice though....

My spies are everywhere. But in this case only going by your own description where you pointed out all the bad stuff that happens later in the game.

You are lucky that you saved your friend, mine who is a trucker and does long trip got back from one and when he did i told him so uh don't buy that and he said too late i bought it on my way home and later on he said yeah i should have waited to ask you first it blows then asked me if i knew cheats so he could beat it faster, i replied i had no idea since i quit at act 2 and uninstalled.

As your question , i wont buy anything else related to DA2, but yeah people are stupid , asking for companions altenate clothing DLCs and asking to be nickled and dimed even more than what they paid for for this

showing a friend everything bad about a game and never mentioning the good sides of it, only because you dislike the game is pretty stupid yes.

ah that wasn't the question. i go and show my friends now every twist and boring scene of da:o, wandering hours through the deep roads, fighting dark spawn in a nearly slow motion gameplay and tell them that the only real choices you make result in who fights with you in the end, which is also totally meaningless, because their armies are too weak nevertheless. or tell them about the (in my opinion) totally crappy characters (except morrigan and shale). why should i tell them anything good about the game?

to make this clear. i really like da:o and it's a great game and yes it is better then da2 (although i enjoyed da2 more) but showing someone all the bad things about anything is allways stupid. da2 has it's good sides.

companions are far more interesting (+the way better friendship/rivalry system), the combat is more fun (if you want tactics play on hard or nightmare) and you can form a totally different hawke everytime you play it. hawke is a much better character then the random warden. there are choices in the game which matter (end of act1, end of act2, nearly every companionquest in act3 (except anders one he will allways .. you know) and some more in act1)) it also matters how often you answer in an aggressive way or good one, resulting in a different hawke.

The best thing to have done was to say what you did and didn't like and let your friend borrow the game and let him make his own opinion of the game.

I need an Ali/Cutlass/Mrcrusty warning button on my computer. So I can, you know, move all edibles and drinks aside, take the cat out, and fasten my seat-belts. They are dangerous all on their own, but together they are a menace :D

As for the OP, well, it really depends on the people. Those who love DA2 buy it because of that (if they like the DLC content).
Those who think it 'meh' might want to give it a try and see if it gets better.
Same for those who disliked the game. Hope dies last, you know.

And then there are people who have it already uninstalled, and then there are people who don't buy DLC on principle - from anyone.

I don't think it has to do with stupidity at all. If a super-duper DLC comes out, even I might relax my "no DLC ever" stance.

To the OP. I'm not convinced DA2 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it isn't bad when judged on its own merits. There have been some decent sales of DA2 recently (Amazon and Steam have both had them) so if you're looking for affordable entertainment, you could do worse than play DA2.

As for the DLC, I have a friend who swoons over the mage robe in the DLC. Would probably marry it if that were allowed. Who can stand in the way of true love? I can't.

DA2 is beyond hope as far as I'm concerned, best to milk it will cheap appearence packs and move on.Whether the taint has spread to the franchise name as a whole, that will probably become apparent in a few months.

My brother didn't take my advise. I followed DA2 very closely and REALLY wanted a DAO2 so badly I could taste it. The changes talked about before release seemed interesting, others good or bad, but nothing could prepare me for what the demo gave me.

I told my brother, but he wanted a new game badly and just knew that DA2 would be great cause DAO was. He ended up playing for about 8 hours before giving up and trading it in. Expensive lesson. Maybe next time he'll listen to big brother. :D

Edit: BTW... I didn't know if you meant the above. :)

Conversation between the OP and his friend...

"I bought DA2!"
"And? Is it any good?"
"Sorry. I can't tell you. You have to make up your own mind."
"Is it that good?"
"Please... Don't ask me. My friends on the forum will kill me if I do."

I don't know about you, but chances are that I would have told him what I thought about it, even before the hands on experience. But does it matter? I think that they are better off buying a game they both like anyway. ;)

To the OP: There are lots of things I don't like. Still there are other things I do like about the game. I see devs at work gathering info for patches. I filed a bug report and they confirmed the bug and told me that they will fix it. Do those patches improve the core of the problems? Most certainly not. It's a strange game, though. It's a kind of love/hate relation. Ghehe. Stop posting about what we think of it doesn't make a better DA3. And stop supporting DA2 by not buying its DLCs will mainly effect the next title. Do I trust BW enough and hope that they do better in the future? That's a hard one. Lately I am losing confidence, because it looks like the devs are being in denial and are mirroring everything back to their fans.
