Hi All,

Bought and installed the platinum version of steam yesterday, and am now gagging to start the OC tonight!  So firstly hello community..

Ive looked into a range of faq's and i must admit i am fairly confused.  I want to do the character generation myself, but dont want to gimp myself in a way that is going to put me off playing the game!

Sooo guess just hoping for a lil advice on where to start for someone new to NWN, but experienced in the genre.. was thinking either something that hits things hard, or a buffer/debuffer kinda thing, altho from what ive read cleric is a good place to start too, so yea... :)

Welcome to the forums, you should take a look at this thread:

About you question...Fighter is maybe the simplest class. Cleric is also good if you want to cast spells. Keep in mind that you'll have companions of most classes, so you'll be able to experiment and learn different classes, no matter the class you play.

There was a similar thread some months ago, but I don't remember how it was titled.

There are lots of questions about what class etc to play. Generally, a fighter-type is the simplest to play, though as I was saying in this NWN1 thread, I think a Paladin or Ranger might be better, depending on what you're going for.

The Original Campaign (OC) itself is not so hard that it'll actually mess you over if you make a bad choice, but it can be frustrating to know you wasted a feat or something and can never change your mind.

Clerics are a good all-round class, they're pretty stable and resilient so it's hard to go massively wrong with them. However, if you just want to get into the game without learning too many rules, it might be better to take a non-spellcaster. To cast spells, you have to memorize them by selecting them on the spellbook screen, and then resting. It's not that big a deal, but I know that I was confused by it the first time I tried and it's one extra set of rules to know. A fighter-type doesn't have that issue. You can easily make a "something that hits things hard" character with pretty much any of those classes.

While it is true that you will have companions of most classes available there are a few times in both the OC and MotB when you will have to fight alone. This is the no spoilers forum though so I can't be more detailed than that.

Thanks for the advice and links guys, much appreciated!

FYI i decided to take the plunge and go for a cleric, fighter just sounded a lil to basic..

Also decided (as long as my interest holds up!) to try blogging my experiences of playing the OC through...over here...

Thanks again,

Ciao

If you find, after playing, that you are getting into the whole character building thing, you may want to check out the nwn2db web site. It is a site where "Builders" create different character types and then others critique them. It is a great place to get ideas and feedback on your character, but be aware that you don't want to go over there until/unless you are really looking to customize your choices. Because there are a LOT of choices (some good and some not so good). For beginners, as already stated, Fighter or Paladin are really your best choices.

I just started a few days ago, and i am about 2 hours in.

This is a great game (especially for old-school table-top D&Ders). Enjoy!!

If you find yourself wanting to continue that tabletop PnP feel and are looking to get into playing multiplayer then have a look at the PW Sea of Dragons. http://seaofdragons.com/ we aim to hit every feel and aspect of tabletop D&D and take place in the Forgotten Realms region known as the Moonsea. Have fun with the OC, I know I did. cheers.
