OK... I know I am a bit late in this whole Anders thing, since I replayed DA2 twice... but...

I recently started playing Awakening again, since I only made one playthrough because it seemed so much inferior to DA:O... but when I experienced the mess that is called DA2, Awakening - DA2 comparission would be like comparing Godfather to let's say Gigli. (both of them have Al Pacino in ;))

My point was that I have forgotten how much likeable was Anders in Awakening, he had his issue with the whole Chantry-Circle-Templar thing but not like DA2 Anders, who's constantly ****ing in a pathetic way.

He had great humor in Awakening, great lines in party banter.... where did that go?!

DA2 Anders made me hate the mages, in fact the whole game (DA2) made me pro-templar... back in Origins and Awakening I was pro-mage and loved playing as one.

Never mind my current feelings for mages, I think Bioware ruined a complete and likeable character that Anders was. Some might say that Justice has his fair share of Anders changed persona, but was that confirmed?? From what I know is that when Justice steps in - he tottaly takes over.

Maybe it wouldn't made sense for Anders to keep his funny, joyful character and have at the same time an angry spirit inside him, but that just contributes to this whole feeling of rushed, unplanned, heartless job and effort put into DA2.

Yeah, they butchered Anders. I was looking forward to some interesting party banter when I first recruited him. Instead I get a whiny unlikable douche. That and all the mages are insane in this game. Total 180 from Origins.

Aside from Anders, Fenris and Aveline were also annoying. Constantly ****ing and detracting from the story and my overall enjoyment. Very lame.

* David Gaider was the original writer for Anders in Awakening, but Jennifer Hepler took over the role for Dragon Age II.

They mad ehim better. Anders in DA2 is more real. Anders in DA2 shows actual character growth. He's more interesting. He's better written. He's not as juvenile and made for adults not little kiddies. The fact that Anders is no longer 'likeable' is a good thing.

They killed him and made him gay when he previously wasn't. Play Awakening again though and you'll find how he still had a deep hatred for templars. He even claims how much he hated The First Enchanterer because he supported the circle.

"All I want is a pretty girl, a decent meal, and the right to shoot lightning at fools."
(Meeting Oghren) "Wow... A dwarf that smells like a brewery. You never see that anywhere."
"Maker's breath, kitty. What have you been eating?"
(After seeing a pit filled with dead bodies in Wending Woods) "This place is a death trap! If I have to go into the bushes to answer nature's call, you're coming with me!"
"After my seventh escape attempt, you think they'd have given me credit for trying."
"Magic isn't for your amusement! Why don't I just do a little dance? Anders' Spicy Shimmy?"
(Informing Velanna of the Joining's consequences) "At the very least, it's hard to get the taste out of your mouth for a few hours."
(Upon being removed from party) "Andraste's knicker-weasels!"
(At ruined house in Blackmarsh after leaving the Fade) "It's a picturesque little place, apart from being ruined and haunted."

Good ol' Anders! :P

Didn't she write Fenris as well? Helper is apparently a fan of the "I hate everything." mentality.

I actually quite like Anders' DA2 character development, and believe it to be wonderfully interesting and intriguing. The presence of a Fade spirit within his body, warping his mind and psyche in the process, results in the development of an increasingly jaded, bitter and hateful Anders. The snarky, playful and flirtatious man that he was during the events of Awakening have long since departed.

Oh, and Anders' bisexuality is the best thing evar. :D

Not in Awakening. He was straight and they changed him. You could see by his dialogue that he was straight.

Youa re wrong. Go play Awakening again, and listen/read to what he says. He even flirts with certain male npc companions!

Actually I am in the middle of my awakening 3rd play.
That is why I ask, he makes light jokes, being nice, but flirts ?
Please be more specific on which 'certain' male NPC that he "flirts".
Or perhaps a screenshot would be nice.

Bcoz when you are possessed by a Spirit of Justice (turned to become Vengeance) you act like a cheerfull an' happy jester, spilling jokes out of your ass every second...

Seriously, there is nothing wrong with Anders. In DA2 they made us realise that even a just person (or in this matter, a jokester) can become "corrupted"... one way or another.

They needed someone to "make a HUGE impact" on the world. Is there a better way than to chose a person that you love/like to do it? Even if that means destroying that man?

I only wish his death was more epic...

PS. To those complaining about the "gay" thing.
Don't romance him?

Nathanial asks Anders if he always wears mage robes. Anders' reply starts with: "Not when I'm naked I don't." I was always a little unclear on what leering sounded like until I heard that line. It moves to more cheerful banter, but it sounded like flirting to me.

Andres was just another wasted opportunity IMHO.

When you meet Andres it has only been a matter of a few months since Awakenings. They should have had the same Andres with a spirit that was still Justice.

Then over the course of the 7 years, show how acts changed Andres more and more, and in turn warped Justice into vengeance. Andres would not have changed that much in a few months, and definitely not enough to warp Justice to vengeance right out the box.

Show the transformation of both which lead to the final act.

Sometimes people change in hard and fast ways.  I agree Anders wasn't the same between games... but he does explain why.  He came to a decision that his life as goofy, adventerous guy wasn't doing ****.  Mages were still dying and being exploited by Templars...  so he decided to do something about it.

Sorry kiddos there was nothing that happened to Anders that wasn't hinted at in Awakening and can be accounted for by merging with a freaking spirt of justice!

Now don't get all defensive I missed it on my first playthrough of DAII and didn't realize how well hinted at it was because I rarely ran around with both Anders and Justice in my DAO:A party which is why I missed all these dialogues.  I'll c+p them here because I know people rarely actually will follow links and read the material at them.

Anders and JusticePosted Image
  • Anders: Why do spirits seek out mages? I've always wondered.
  • Justice: You speak of demons. I am not a demon.
  • Anders: Aren't demons simply spirits with unique and sparkling personalities?
  • Justice: They have been perverted by their desires.
  • Anders: But what do they want from mages?
  • Justice: Perhaps they wish the same as I: silence.
───────
  • Justice: I see that your feline companion remains with you.
  • Anders: He seems happy enough. Isn't that right, Ser Pounce-a-lot?
  • Ser Pounce-a-lot: (Meow!)
  • Justice: To enslave another creature does not seem just.
  • Anders: He's not a slave! He's a friend. And he's also a cat.
  • Justice: A cat that lacks freedom.
  • Anders: Just ignore him, Ser Pouce-a-lot. They don't have pets in the Fade, apparently.
  • Ser Pounce-a-lot: (Meow!)
───────
  • Justice: I understand that you struggle against your oppression, mage.
  • Anders: I avoid my oppression. That's not quite the same thing, is it?
  • Justice: Why do you not strike a blow against your oppressors? Ensure they can do this to no one else?
  • Anders: Because it sounds difficult?
  • Justice: Apathy is a weakness.
  • Anders: So is death. I'm just saying.
───────
  • Justice: I believe you have a responsibility to your fellow mages.
  • Anders: That bit of self-righteousness is directed at me?
  • Justice: You have seen oppression and are now free. You must act to free those who remain oppressed.
  • Anders: Or I could mind my business, in case the Chantry comes knocking.
  • Justice: But this is not right. You have an obligation.
  • Anders: Yes, well... welcome to the world, spirit.
───────
  • Anders: Are you saying that you could become a demon, Justice?
  • Justice: I said no such thing.
  • Anders: You said that demons were spirits perverted by their desires.
  • Justice: I have no such desires.
  • Anders: You must have some desires...
  • Justice: I have none! Desist your questions!
───────
  • Anders: I apologize, Justice. I didn't mean to suggest you would become a demon.
  • Justice: I should certainly hope not.
  • Anders: I just wondered what relation there is between spirits and demons. Demons are a worry to any mage.
  • Justice: I do not know what makes demons as they are. Such evil angers me, but I do not understand it.
  • Anders: Well, I hope you never come to understand.
  • Justice: I as well, mage. More than you could possibly know.

They purposely destroyed a likeable character for a more personal feeling.
