This last play through I have gone the total A-hole route and did pretty well every despicable thing through out the game but at the end I just couldn't tell Meredith to kill Bethany when you have the choice to stop Meredith or egg her on.  Does she really strike Bethany down if you tell her to?

If Bethany is a Circle mage, then Meredith will execute her unless Hawke stops her.

Not only that but if you try to stop her, Meredith is within her legal right per chantry law to kill you as well (a point that Cullen somehow forgets).

You were doomed anyways, since she bought the idol for her sword.

Hawke and his cronies get a free pass because every one of the smart high level characters (that do not go insane) knows he/she can wipe the floor with them.  Both Orsino and Meredith before they go bonkers realize that the champion is an important politcal ally and also such a force that they would surely lose any attack.

I agree with you in that I'm sure that in Chantry law and the rite of annulement the templar commander probably has free reign to get rid of anyone standing in the way of their duty.

That's sorta the point when it comes to the Right of Annulment.

Bethany: "I hope it was all worth it..."
Meredith lops her head off, says: "game of soccer anybody?"

Aveline kicks it across the gallows, Fenris passes it to Hawke, Hawke for the goal!
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!"

Hawke: "yes sister, it was worth it!"

In fact, she's more the happy to oblige.

I feel bad just watching that. I still haven't managed to make myself even side with the templars yet, heh.

Sweet Jesus that is so wrong. Bethany is the only mage I give a damn about... I feel tainted for watching that. :(

I feel already sick when i see scenes of betraying Samara, Alistair or Fenris. But this is somehow the worst of all possible betrayals in Bioware games.
Nice that the game gives you a chance to come to your senses, although you already agreed to it (Meredith:"EVERY mage in the circle is to be executed! Immediatly" [...] Hawke "Okelidokeli"). Otherwise my templar playthrough would have been impossible.

Anyone else think siding with the Templars is the morally right thing to do?

Killing Bethany IS the logical extension of siding with Meredith.

Indeed. This is EXACTLY what siding with the Templars means.  I fault Bioware for not showing more of it such as our "hero" slaughting rooms of little mage children Anakin style.  That at least would be an honest protrayal of the Right of Annulment.

So true.  I'm sure a templar sided Hawke kills many Bethanys, but it's somehow okay because we never knew them.

Edit: Forgot to reply to this part..

Samara's is more a mercy than anything.  I don't know about you, but I'd rather not live with myself if I had to do what Samara had to do.  Though it is tremendously stupid on Shepard's part.

Fenris was...  wow.  Just a terrible, truly evil option.

Alistair's I only tried once and I couldn't go through with it.  I made the mistake of trying it when I was playing a female Warden that was in a romance with him.  When he said "I didn't think I deserved to be this happy, but I never thought you'd agree..." in that defeated, sorrowful tone I just had to alt-ctrl-del to end the process and then go feel terrible about myself somewhere for a few hours.  That was brutal.

Ah yes, the so-called "golden rule" i.e. He who has the gold (has the power) makes the rules.

That's nice as long as you're the one with the power....but such things don't last forever...and then payback can be a real female dog.
