Dude. Don't be raggin on Alistair. He's mah brosef. Think about it - he's the first "Carth" character in Bioware games who is not an annoying, depressed, clingy douche.
Yes, he's a thirty-year-old virgin. So what. The guy has been locked up in a monastery for most of his life, got "rescued" by the only father figure he's ever had and then lost the said father figure and a whole bunch of friends in short order. Of course he's a little... out of his comfort zone.
I see him as my main's adopted awkward little brother who uses lame jokes to keep up a brave front. At least he doesn't mope about it - for the most part he's quite cheerful. And at the same time he's not afraid to stand up to me when I choose "somewhat less amicable" solutions to problems.
So yeah. Don't be hatin'.
CARTH ONASI WAS A BAD ASS, EVEN WHEN I KILLED HIS SON FOR BEING A SITH HE STILL STAYED LOYAL!
Revan(Player): Malak!
Bastilla: Malak!
Carth: Down you go! (attack)
I mean seriously, who is the most bad ass there?

Alastair becomes surprisingly manly and masterful if you treat him right
In all seriousness though, one of the most enjoyable parts of the game, for me, was watching his character mature and evolve; he has quite a journey on several levels. As DA:O doesnt have the defined alignment system of DnD (an evil act won't turn my "good" companions totally against me), he was more pivotal than my player character's other companions in determining her actions and the outcome of them.
Now I shall replay with a neutral elf mage and demote Alastair to bit-player. I might have more freedom, but it will be interesting to see how how the game plays without my conscience by proxy.

But just the moment I beat Loghain in a knightly fair duel and he surrenders, Alister suddenly finds his backbone and tries to force himself on the throne for revenge. Loghain is maybe not a nice guy, but even he can have a chance to redeem. Anyway, Alister ends up as a drunk in some pub boasting about what he was, which shows what 'great' man he is. Sorry, he gives up the Grey Wardens, fighting the Blight and his homeland because I don't let him chop off Loghain's head. That's about as weak as a man can be. I don't like him at all.

You are SO wrong! He's just a gentleman who doesn't want more pain in his life (from a broken heart). And it's ok to 'not be ready' by anyone! Even guys!Heals.like.Jesus wrote...
My only beef with alistar is that he is a wuss. What kinda pansy answers "I... am not ready yet" when a hot chick asks you to do the dirty in a tent? I mean even the "im not ready yet" line is typical female response.
When a woman asks, a man would deliver. Simple as that.
Look at zevran - he doesnt need buttering up and constant reassurment that he is a man to do the deed
And it's no more of a female reponse than a male. I know a lot of females who are very quick to say yes.

turn off tactics and any character is as good as you, because your controlling them
I agree with this in theory but I’ve controlled Alistair direct, who needed to get through many healing potions & still die – numerous times.
replaced his sorry arse with shale, controlling him direct & it’s job done 1st time. No idea why it doesn’t really work with Alistair. He’s got pretty decent armour, not bad enchanted sword, elite redcliff shield & he’s just crap.
I’d be impressed if alistair could wipe his arse without cocking it up & dying.
Alistair's like any other character....if you develop the right things, he's awesome in any fight. I have NEVER taken him out of my party (even though he sleeps on the job a lot at first), he's now 15th level and is as bad ass a fighter as Sten (with his weapon, his 'soul'). I'm impressed with him and Sten (and have NEVER used Shale, though I get him), but NOBODY can touch my female rogue in damage. She is deadly! It's ALL in the way you develop the character.
