After finding out she gives friendship points for selling Feynriel's soul to a demon... I wouldn't care of Ser Alrik got ahold of her.

exactly my point...she will do anything for power...no matter the consequences...she will dam all people cause she thinks demons are cool and help us....oh...and yeah demons can be controled...aham...that worked well everytime

Except she won't

Don't let a absurdly flawed Friendship/Rivalry meter color your opinions about anyone. Factor what they actually SAY

For example. Leliana can approve of you letting the Desire Demon walk off with her bewitched Templar, even though she calls it Unholy.

yes Merill does say that dealing with demons will help her make the elves what they were...so i guess she sees herself as the savior...riiight...so Merill is not only stupid but she also wants to be the elven leader who will bring rebirth(even though she dosen't mention herself ruling it)

And Isabella would really sell her soul for a boat....

Heh my point was that Isabella wouldn't sell her soul for a boat, that the entire auto fail dream sequence is a load of crap and that what gives friendship/rivalry points is a poor gauge of character.

Except we're not talking about her turning on Hawke.  We're talking about her giving permanent approval for an incredibly evil course of action simply because her "we should always listen to demons!" stupidity.

I adore Merrill, and it killed me to reject her in my first/cannon playthrough.

The way I see it, Merrill may have dabbled in some dangerous stuff, but she wasn't actually responsible for any of her clansmen that died. The one you find in the cave runs away to his death. The keeper sacrifices herself to protect Merrill from the Demon, which Hawke was able to slay anyway. If her clan dies at the end, it's because they blame Merrill for those deaths, when really it was their fear and lack of faith that did them in. If everyone had helped her in the first place, instead of banishing her, all of those deaths would have been avoided.

In my opinion, the fear of blood magic seems to be a lot more dangerous than blood magic itself.

I love Merril. She is fun, beautiful, powerful, intelligent and a mage. Sure, she turns on you in the fade, but at that time your raleationship isn't fully developed. And her naievenes (spelling?) is nowhere as high as some people want to make it out to be.

I didn't really feel much at all for Merrill. She was really naive and kind of air-headed, which just aren't great qualities, particularly when you factor in a willingness to work with beings of pure evil. But her intentions were good, which means that she wasn't someone I was philosophically opposed to, even if she was an idiot in the means she used to achieve her goals. She was just kind of a 'meh' for me. Besides, people-cute just doesn't work on me. Now, kitties on the other hand...

Merrill gets upset if you disagree with her use of blood magic. Past that it tends to be not that she's against you hating blood magic or demons in general. She sees it as you not hearing out the other side if that makes sense. For example the books. She hates it if you destroy the books. It's possible that it's not the fact that the books are destroyed. It's that you don't even look through them before destroying them. Just like being upset if you don't hear out Torpor before killing him. Make sense?

edited to add extra clarification.

Another example is Merrill thinks Spirits and Demons are both capable of evil. That instead to her they are basically one and the same as the first children. Some Demons lust for Mortals some do not. There could be truth in that. It makes her naive to attempt to hear out and deal with them of course. But she is one of the few who openly recognizes that the only true difference is demons seems to be selfish and have more zeal than the "spirits" but they are all spirits first. Some mortals called them demons, but they were allt he maker's first children.

Can call her naive if you wish. She is amusing and funny at times. Much needed over some of the brooding emo that the men are. Why I tend to prefer my grouped to be Varric, Isabela & Merrill mostly. I leave the brooding angst at home.

I didn't really like Merrill that much. I found her stupidity at times funny at other times irritating. The romance with my mage was fairly bland. It was like, I flirt with you twice and hey, we're boffing like mad. Isabella's romance was a bit deeper.

All in all, I didn't really like either romanceable girl, but Merril was my least favorite. I think Hawke would be better off staying single in the end instead of getting either together with either girl. :P

This, pretty much. If it's cute, it needs to be something lacking sapience in order for me to 'gigglesquee'. An ingenuous adult is not my cup of tea, but to each his own.

I didn't find her particularly cute physically, either, but that was for all of the elves. She (and they) were all just interesting-looking, I suppose (with the exception of Orsino who went beyond 'interesting' and into 'incredibly sexy'). Not a bad thing, though, I really like the elf re-design.

I have to admit that at times I MAY  have gigglesquee'd -- Merrill is adorable albeit with a little bit of tunnel vision -- she only sees her goal & not the path to get there.

I have an infatuation with elves I suppose; my Warden was an elf mage & my (Female Mage) Champion is romancing Fenris. My Champion is also a Blood Mage but she does NOT consort with demons & kills all demons who cross her path.

But I did just have a "facepalm" moment with Merrill during the Last Straw quest while we were on the way to the Gallows. The city is on fire & people are dying all around us (mostly because we are killing them, but I digress) -- take a look at Merrill's opinion of the evening in my screenshot below:

Wow, such bad opinions of Merrill. Then to think she's probably my favourite character of all time =P. She might be socially awkward but sometimes her values are truer to the mark than any of the others. Also her views on blood magic and repairing the Eluvian are .... interesting to say the least (when you discount all social prejudice and the fact that Marethari doesn't automatically know more than her and I'm guessing she doesn't). Anyway I could go to great detail here, but I'm not going to. I find her fascinating and I hope she'll be back as a compagnon in DA3.

I like Merrill but I will NOT gigglesquee unless it's for a sum of money equating to no less then $1,000,000 in US dollars.

She was also my favorite character in Dragon Age II. I thought she was a great example of what a good mage can be. I thought Merrill was a great character. She refused to be passive about the plight of the People. She studied the lore on the Eluvian and extrapolated information from the shard. She thought an invaluable piece of technology was worth preserving, when the entire premise of the Dalish is to preserve elven culture, history, and knowledge.

Merrill was an awesome character, and an ambitious person who wanted to overturn centuries of a dwindling culture to irrevocably change the People for the better.
