What country do you live in, first of all?

Second of all, me and all four of my closest friends play ME. It spread like the plague. We are all women between the ages of 19 and 25.

Don't get any ideas.

well there are other characters from other games that dont shake their Salt shakers around.....
Take Meryl from the Metal gear series....she is a very strong willed character...and not over exaggerated ...
in Metal gear solid 1 for ps1 she is a love interest but it does not show them make out ..
in Metal gear solid 4 for ps3..she is a combat hardened veteran and the leader of a Sqaud...very tough...also the game doesnt exploit her goodies....(she actually left the protagonist Solid snake)

very true..and its the publishers to blame...i have no plbm with fem sheps.....also there are lots of female protagonist(Lara croft,Samus)
check this out

Yeah, but FemShep is one of the few who isn't waving her ****** and buns in the air for all the boys to see.  It's like the difference between Ashley in ME1 and Miranda in ME2.  You can sort of tell which one's fanservice.

Well, here in argentina, I'd say there are a whole lotta girls who play video games but the number in comparison to men is really low...I mean it must be in the 80/20 tops...and most girls play other type of games like Sims and stuff like that

That doesn't mean I don't think there arent any of course...surely there are

her personality is a total change in such an unrealistic way its silly and dumb. the only people that disagree with that are those creepy massive tali fans.

she's fairly mature and basically a walking codex page for quarians and geth in ME1.

in ME2 she gets shy, awkward, incompetent, emotionally needy, and generally much more immature as a character. like she regressed or something.

its very weird.

I'm a creepy, massive, tali fan am I? I certainly wouldn't describe myself as such. And why so insulting, just because you *feel* her character wasn't to your liking in ME2. It's just plain rude.

I saw nothing except a mature quarian chick in ME2 until you directly start the romance. Which, considering her lack of experience in that area, it's entirely practical she has certain defensive mechanisms. Hers happen to be general awkardness. We all have different reactions to different social situations.

thats fantastic that you and you female friends all love mass effect. thats awesome.

unfortunately that doesnt change the fact that most female gamers are casual gamers who prefer stuff like the wii and facebook games

there seems to be a fairly understated female gaming thing where they're slowly becoming a major force in the gaming industry. its not quite there yet, but in a couple years pretty much everyone will be gamers. its becoming more and more accepted in general.

my best friend is a girl who plays alot of games, in the past it was mostly MMO's and casual games but she's getting more itno mainstream games or whatever the proper term for it is. i convinced her to pre-order LA noire because of that awesome facial expression stuff it has and how its about solving crimes and all that. she's still not sold on the whole RPG idea yet which is a bit odd lol because i know if she gave mass effect or somethign like it a decent chance she'd really enjoy it, but she is very hesistent to try games like that for some reason.

have you been in the tali thread with all that fanart? honestly tell me thats NOT creepy lol...

this thread isnt about tali so im not going to go on a rant here, but her character makes very little sense in context with the story in both ME1 and ME2. the reasons for recruiting he are sorta just "uh, sure i guess you can come with us lol" instead of a practical reason like garrus or wrex or liara.

theres just so many things about her character that i outright dislike and makes very little sense int he context of the universe, the story, and the other characters. plus she did go through a bit of regression from ME1 to ME2.

but agian, this isnt about tali so ill stop there.

Why is it every other post is how women don't want anything except funny sim hats and addictive facebook games where you collect carrots? Women don't want an emotionally charged story? I guarentee you they do.

While I beleive Mass Effect should stick to Male Shep on box's, for consistancies sake, I certainly believe we're far overdo for a strong iconic woman on the front cover for once.

How do you know that's all women want? So few people market these kind of games to them, they have no idea what aspects of the game might appeal to them. All they know is you shoot guns and there's a bunch of aliens.

Bioware makes great games, but their feature marketing is lax, unless you're looking for it.

I haven't. Because that kind of stuff doesn't interest me in general. I prefer the more intelectual discussions. There are creepy fans of anything though.

I'll stop the convo though, if that's what you wish, I just hope you wont' stereotype quite so much.

It's fine if you don't like a character. But immediatly assuming that means something is wrong with them, is ignorant.

The hesitation probably comes from the masculine monopoly that still goes with major console titles. It's still considered somewhat weird that girls can and do play Halo, Gears, CoD, etc.

But the romance, the character arcs, the ability to make your own Shepard--all that stuff was enough to convert my Sim-playing friends to Mass Effect. It made it worth the shooty bits, and eventually they started to enjoy the shooty bits.

The trick is to market more than just the boom bang pew pew. Mass Effect has the depth and personality of some of the better television series out there, and takes just as much personal involvement as the Sims. In fact, I'd say I care a helluva lot more about my squad than I do some Sim I made up to entertain myself. That stuff is gold, and will coax a lot of potential girl gamers out of the closet if the marketing teams sheds a little more light on it.

Story.  Drama.  Characters.  Compelling universe.  Personal involvement in something deeper than pulling a trigger.  Come onnnnnn Bioware, so much $$$!

Bleh, from someone who used to get curb stomped by women in Halo...I can attest. Then again I got curb stomped by almost anybody. I start off strong in FPS's but my skill tends to platue quickly and then after the first few weeks you can usually find me respawning.

ME1 was marketed better as a Hybrid RPG/Shooter. There was still a lot of focus on the combat portion, but it was better. They've really focused on the shooting aspect in their marketing lately and it's a bit disappointing.

But ah well.

Sorry to say this but you can't deny that most average women don't like shooters...wether they are RPG oriented or not....

Only because they've never tried them.

It's like being told that blonds don't like watermelon.  Everyone assumes that, since you're blond, you won't like watermelon, and because of this, you never bother with it because, well, you're blond.

But then one day your friend convinces you to try some watermelon.

And it's... surprisingly tasty.

I can't? I already did. Even assuming that your blatant opinion was fact, and the fact women have never really been given a chance to like them by advertisers had NOTHING to do with it. RPG's are story oriented. Can you really say women don't appreciate an emotionally charged story as much as, if not MORE SO, than a man?

The marketing focuses on the guns. Therefore people assume it's all about the guns.

Hell yes! I kicked ASS with Yoshi! However, this newest installment has my younger sister kicking mine whenever she uses Bowzer. Ah, we girls have been trained so well....

but yes, some levels were god awful, but shooting hats off of people and have them not notice was a blast!

bioware is not really to blame...its E.A who is Enslaving Bioware to make these marketing directions

Pshh my grandma! How many girls in your school pplayed that against how many boys did...the result will tell you.

Of course you can play it, or have been playing them since whenever...but still that doesn't change a lot.

Although I must admit that the number od women playing VG has increased a lot in the last ten years...

In my school? I'd say a good half of them. We were a nerdy bunch. It gets even better in college. Besides, women who are introdued to games early by their gamer dads are more likely to become gamer themselves (me being one of them) so i predict a boom in women gamers in the future!
