So Mass Effect is centered more to the male gamer, right?

Dude, I remember being really little and sitting on Dad's knee, watching him play Star Wars: X-Wing.  Good times.

My ex-girlfriend: Huge BioWare fan. Loves the series.

I'm sure you'd love to see all women playing you -- :P -- but back to the point, the 'big picture' you speak of seems not so shabby to me. I think there are a lot more women enjoying the series than you realize, even if, yes, there are certainly fewer than there are males. And yes, a huge reason for that is the marketing campaign.

Could be, but then again my country's reality has nothing to do with yours and perhaps that's the difference...

Of course now there are a lot of youger female players now here too...

Take this for example I played counter strike a lot back then, also some cod which we can admit they are more male oriented than ME,and in American servers I met alot of female players in both games...and competitive...in my countries server....1 or 2 most....

so may be I am being a bit short sighted but well it's what I see here

What country are you from? Sorry if you've already stated it; I just got home from work and haven't read the full thread as of yet.

he's got a valid point. a large portion of female gamers only really play casual games.  thats not even sexist to say, its just a fact is all. your preference in games is completely subjective. me saying mass effect is better than assassins creed is my opinion, its subjective. its not wrong or right.

its just pointing out a trend and using marketing to its most effectiveness thats all.

and mind you. im not against gamer girls at all. in fact i want more gamer girls. more gamer girls = more girls i can play games with = more girls with common interests = more girls who arent always talking about stupid stuff like jersey shore = awesome.

i still think its odd that people care so much about the marketing of the game. personally i research everygame i buy before actually buying it to make sure its somethign i'd like. sometimes ill buy a game because its a big name and its on sale on steam or something for 5 bucks but those are impulse buys. but in general i care about the content not the marketing, any smart consumer does.

hell i make sure i know what im buying before i buy most stuff. if i buy a chair i wanna make sure its comfortable and well made, i dont judge the chair on its ad lol.

There was also this Olympics game i loved playing. Also, TMNT 2 and 3.

jakal, where are you from? I do think here in America the stigma is fading from all but the most extreme medias, and that certainly helps.

argentina, and I live in Buenos Aires which is the capital and it's a big city just like any other...perhaps there are other reasons, like having a console here is much more expensive, there's practically no advertising, except for Wii, and PCs which are my Forte, aren't so popular among women,in the sense of a true gaming PC, and let's face it playing these games on crappy pcs isnt' a great idea

I personally owuld like to see how these studies are done. For all we know, they might just be pidgonholing women into a catagory and not giving a chance.

Problem with your logic, Clonedzero:

Most people probably won't buy a Mercedes in their lifetime. It's a fact. Should Mercedes stop advertising in a way that appeals to everyone?

Also, there are way, waaaay more gamer girls than you think. Not every girl needs to be a gamer, but there are enough of them that it's a profitable demographic.

Finally, advertising: A lot of people won't bother to research a game until they saw something about it that looked interesting. For example, I passed up Homefront without doing any research because the ads didn't appeal to me. Same thing with Crysis when it came out.

EDIT: Might pick up the original Crysis eventually.  Maybe.

well one of the things I love about this forum is to see how many women love and in a way live this game, I may be older but I do want this stigma to banish forever...nothing would make me happier than to see more and more women in this life that I certainly love and am addicted to

if theres money to be made, you bet they'd be advertising to women more. trust me. they wouldnt pidgeonhole women into a category if it was practical to market their product to a specific audience.

ive seen studies (not relating to this) but other marketing studies, and they are crazy with what they test and see what works. i'd be surprised if they didnt toy with ideas for marketing it more towards women. the only issue with that is you lose the focus of the larger male market thats probably the reason.

Honestly, I really don't care that Bioware doesn't market femshep that much. I'm just happy to have the option to play a woman for once.

Just be patient, and don't worry that there are no gamer girls in your area.

To make an analogy: Say your favorite sports team actually isn't the local one.  Since you live in an area where a different team is much more popular, does that mean your team has no fans?  Of course not--they all just live somewhere else.

I kind of have to deal with that when it comes to my favorite American football team.  I like the Steelers, but around here it's Packers, Packers, Packers!  The Super Bowl didn't help.  God damn it.

How would they lose the market? It would be one thing if they changed the game formula. Somehow, i doubt including some shots of female protagonists is really going to turn the male gamers away if the basic story and comat is still kick ass.

And, are you saying women dont have spending power? Then why are men moaning so much about wives/girlfriends/daughters/sisters taking all their money? Image IPB

Well, this is what I was saying before in another thread...very few games out there give you so many options with good results...damn this game is awsome...
