As long as Bioware continues with the excellent voice over by Jennifer Hale and provides us with solid Love Interests, I'll be happy as a krogan with fish
So Mass Effect is centered more to the male gamer, right?

Agree, I do not care what or who is on the box/posters as far as i can choose gender.corebit wrote...
don't really care that we are not represented on the box or posters.
I don't play games, where I "have to be" male (except planescape torment).

I think that guesstimate is off. While recent statistics show that more girls are indeed gaming, the majority of them are playing casual games.
Consider statistics that showed that 82% (!) of players play as MaleShep.
http://www.destructo...ng-188362.phtml
I just can't imagine that number being like that with a supposed almost even split.
In that right its not surprising and honestly totally logical that the focus on marketing is on MaleShep (especially since they're PAYING for that face) though I still think they could do to play as FemShep during gameplay and such.
Well, you can't possibly trust those numbers. They have no context.
They do by no means specify whether the subjects play exclusively as male Shepard, or most often as male Shepard, or if they simply ever played a male Shepard. And vice versa.
The same 80% who've played as MaleShep could just as well have played as FemShep for all we know.
There is also this BSN poll with over 3000 votes to take into account, which shows a clear preference for FemShep overall.
Furthermore, Jesse Houston of BioWare admitted to FemShep being the alleged "fan favourite", yet apparently this doesn't warrant the slightest piece of marketing exposition.
Which is odd.
As late as August last year, EEDAR (Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, world's largest research institution in the field of video games) published a few reliably contextual statistics on the subject of gender disparity in 7th generation video games, and how the sex of the game's protagonist is apparently a non-factor when it comes to critical acclaim, and by extension, financial revenue.
Give it a looksie! I think it's interesting.
When it all comes down to it, the only reason Sheploo and MaleHawke are the allegedly "marketable" versions is because marketing makes them so. It's a self-affirming circular notion.
It's probably a misconception of what is required to meet that desired sales quota, mixed with an ounce of cowardice.
Not pointing fingers here, it's prevalent in all media. I just wish it wasn't so.
Well if you paid a male model to be the face of the game's marketing, you'd be bitter too if the female voice actor completely stole the show and became the preferred choice. I suppose Bioware just wants to feel like they're getting their money's worth, so they continue to ignore FemShep.

ive seen studies (not relating to this) but other marketing studies, and they are crazy with what they test and see what works. i'd be surprised if they didnt toy with ideas for marketing it more towards women. the only issue with that is you lose the focus of the larger male market thats probably the reason.
I'll let Extra Credits say it for me.
from all your posts i ever see, aka posting mostly in women-game related topics you come off as a really strong MLF.
seriously how is that crew cut going? there is no Bioware conspiricy only catering to the men all the time, you only see what you want to see and its kinda sad how far you take it over a game

I know that the gaming market is predominantly male and I think most video game marketing reflects that and it really doesnt bother me at all, that said however I wish (as other posters have said) it wasnt all so teenage boyish.
As for more "female friendly" marketing I always think of those stupid pink toolkits shops sell "Oh look that toolkit is pink, it must mean its easier to use, just for us stupid girls". Honestly ...........

Same here, but what I don't like is how the media (*coughcough* Fox News) and such things just blatantly say that ME is directed toward a male audience. ...I hate when people say that, about ME and all games in general. If I wouldn't know any better I'm sure a lot more females adore the romances more than the males, and ME puts very important enphasis on its romance. I just also wish it did the whole DA thing, so we could end up with anyone we want.

(I guess to males too) BioWare games are especially amazing for that. Female population in gaming is going to keep growing, especially if they keep the key elements like they have to keep us hooked.
Interesting, as I live in the UK I do not have Fox news (luckily from what I have heard). I agree on all your other points also.

I think this is a minor reason to why they shy away from homosexual relationships. It certaintly didn't help, anyway.

Because men don't play Poker online and things like the either? Because women don't play GTA/COD etc because we're female? No.
I'm sure a lot more girls would find video games ("hardcore" games) more appealing if only the media didn't make it so it's so directed towards males. When I moved to NZ I smiled when I got my job at EB Games as most of its employees are female. (2 of the 3 "bosses" are as well.) And no, we don't play sissy games like Wii sports and what not. If the ability to make choices during character creation was more evident, the figures might be different. I'm just guessing, but many casual players probably won't to bother thinking whether they want to be Adepts or Engineers and just pick the first choice (Male / Soldier / Default face). Also, when I first installed Mass Effect, I just chose default male Shep, because I wanted to make sure that my old and horrible computer could even run the game. Only after that I started over with a carefully constructed custom character. Maybe some others did that too.
Maybe once the trilogy is complete, BioWare can release a pack with all three games and have two versions where one has the iconic default Shep and the other a femShep. That way newcomers wouldn't get confused about a change in marketing. Would be interesting to see if that would attract people who previously haven't took notice of the series at all. I know if I saw a video game cover with a sensibly dressed kickass woman, among a sea of standard stoic soldier guys and chainmail-bikini babes, I'd definitely take a closer look.
