So I can run DA2 perfect in windowed mode, (albeit on Low settings of course but everything still looks GORGEOUS) but if I try to run DA:O in windowed, it makes my computer work like HELL, even with everything on low? I don't think this should be happening. Is this addressed in a patch perhaps? I just recently reinstalled but haven't grabbed patches yet unless it auto-updates, in which case it's full up on patches. It runs fine in fullscreen but I do other things while I play and Alt+tabbing sometimes freezes my computer/the game (though that happens with a lot of games i play anyway.)

Anyone have a solution to this perhaps, or do I just deal with the overheating? (Yes, I have the required specs for the game, I don't think it should be doing this since I can play DA2 smooth as silk in windowed mode for HOURS at a time. Never crashed on me once after turning everything to low.) :crying:

Here's the deal... and of course, without knowing your specs, it's hard to be specific... but DAO is a *very* CPU intensive game. It's a CPU hog, and on a dual-core system, it is not uncommon to have your processor running at 100%, even when it's fullscreen. The devs obviously streamlined the code dramatically for DA2... as a result, DA2 purrs along nicely. But DAO is still clunky.

Yes, there is a new patch in development, according to the "Plans Going Forward" thread at the top of the forum. I have my doubts, however, how much they can address this issue in a patch, since one assumes DA2 was a pretty significant rebuild.

I'm running:

Windows 7 64-bit
Studio XPS 435MT
Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67 GHz (8 CPUs)~2.7GHz
4096MB RAM
DirectX11

I suppose I'll just look for the coming patch then... >.>.

Oh and my video card is:

ATI Radeon 4800 Series (2292MB approx. memory)

Hopefully that helps a bit.

Is this a laptop?

Nope, desktop. >.> Video card's played everything I've thrown at it if it's sucky, so I don't consider it to be bad... also it is dusted inside and out.

Gotcha.  In my humble opinion, you should be okay heating-wise... something like Speedfan or CPUID HW Monitor can help you track temps if you're worried.   I have a six-core AMD processor and the game doesn't push it too hard, so your i7 shouldn't get too stressed.

I don't know how much they're planning to do, patch-wise, with multi-core threading.  Some people will lock down some cores and claim it improves things... I never tried it nor had the need, but if you poke around the forums, you might find something on it.  Still, I think you'll be fine... it's just that DAO will push your CPU where other games will put more stress on the graphics card.

Best,

RI

Hmm, alright. Because it actually makes my computer shut down. Like not manual shutdown, it just shuts off with no warning and I just assumed it was overheating from the heat of the air coming out of the air vent in the back. I'll poke around the forums to see if I can find anything to help though, thanks. I think I have Speedfan somewhere on my computer, lol.

Woah... missed that if you mentioned it earlier.  The shutdown. Yeah, it could be overheating, or something else buggy.  You can also try posting the issue on this forum:

http://www.sevenforu...shes-debugging/

I've used them before... great people over there.  Read the instructions on the forum... you can download a compiler which will look at your Windows mini-dump info, and then attach a report to your post... they'll analyze it and possibly tell you what caused the fault.

You may also want to check your BIOS and see if there's an overheating alarm, and what temps they're set at.
