There's just no substance to Jacob. It has nothing to do with not having issues or cracking jokes. He's literally just a security guard who was at the right time and place and stuck around for no adequetly explained reason. His personality and background are flat out unremarkable.

That fact that he's on a squad with aliens and more interesting humans doesn't really help his existence either.

Jacob has very cool backstory. He used to be a Corsair, Alliance's version of Spectres. He had the potential to be interesting, but it was wasted with bland dialogue. I'm actually hoping BW 'spices him up' for ME3, give him a second chance.

This^, and I think he is one of the more usefull characters in the game (squad fire ammo and pull in the same guy, you just need a warper and you're ready to breeze trhough the game even on insanity).

Jacob isn't boring. I find him quite likable as well.

Sane people should have more sense than to deliberately insult someone that they know that their commanding officer trusts more than them.  Same with Garrus btw, when you suggest leaving someone with him on his recruitment, he says 'bad idea', excuse me?  Who's the commanding officer here again?  You chose to work for Cerberus, not me, I'm doing it only because I don't have a choice and the first thing you do is backtalk me?  Jacob may have meant that Shepard might need backup down there, but thats not what he said.  A sane person should be working his damndest to earn his commanders trust, not deliberately earning black marks against himself.

So the two people that Shepard trusts and has known for a good long while Garrus and Tali, Jacob decides to insult? Which is by extension I might add an insult to his commander, Shepard.  Very sane, I'm sure.

Jacob has a few black marks in my books.  My Shepard is profesional though and will keep Jacob alive, but he's in my bad books and any dirty jobs that come along, guess who's getting them?

I don't remember Jacob insulting Tali... The nearest thing there was to an insult was when he asked her to introduce herself to the ships new AI. Which was better than Tali finding out about it on her own. In fact, Jacob did nothing but commend Tali's ability on the battlefield and her tech expertise, Tali on the otherhand did nothing but back talk him and threaten to help blow up the ship with a grenade. Jacob telling Shepard that leaving a squadmate behind is a bad idea, IS a bad idea. Garrus was able to hold out 3 fully equipped merc groups for a few days by himself and you're worried he couldn't hold out for a few more minutes?
So how has Jacob insulted Garrus?
The only squadmate Jacob has openly insulted and threatened to kill was Legion and rightly so, hundreds of Geth had killed his friends on Eden Prime and he's supposed to trust him within a few hours of meeting him?

Jacob has the priiiiiiiiiize

they should base a character on these forums who does nothing but critiques Shepard all the time, that would be a fitting "boring/annoying character"

Sometimes you need the boring character to keep yourself sane. If every character was a murderous biotic Juggernaut, talking robot with separation issues, and genetically perfect closed off shrew...you'd likely tear your hair out trying to find some semblance of sanity in the universe.

Jacob grounds the team, gives a control group. "Ok the normal guy disagree's with the crazies, maybe I should rethink this."

If I wanted normalcy I would go outside
I want charecters.

I would have loved Jacob to have the over the top macho bravado of Cole Train from Gears Of War
You'd think he's just be stereotypical but then... he gets all grim and serious during the mission
The Shadow Broker dossier reveals he suffers from Depression, takes medicine but gets Bi-Polar disorder as a side effect

Now THAT is a charecter

Sane? Are you kidding me? lol

Hey Commander, I know that you trust Tali, what with you knowing her waaaaaay longer than me, but the first thing I'm going to do when she gets on board is insult her, 'cause its not like that would cause issues for you, my boss Shepard.

Hey Commander, you know that Assassin that you personally recruited?  Well I'm going to be extremely rude to him, 'cause I don't like mercs, don't worry though, I'll say nothing about Zaeed even though he's an actual merc 'cause he'd probably shoot me.

Yeah, sane, right...

If Jacob's in ME:3 he's living in the airlock.

Lol. Because sane people can't distrust someone else can they?

I do still think Jacob has potential to be a really good character in ME3, but as of now, he's simply awkward, phony, and ABnormal. Bioware made a bad character and should feel bad.

Remember whenpeople complained that Kaiden and Liara lacked perosnality? Then Jacob came along and everybody LVOED Liara's shyness and Kaiden's snarking sicne Jacob had no remarkable qualities whatsoever aside form having a sense of honor. So who's going to be the one to make Jacob seem interesting so that everybody who picked him as a roamnce option can see how awesome Jacob was as a character?

And that makes him boring?

It is like if a character isn't an alien, isn't some assassin,  mercenary, or just irrational killer or something along those lines.....then the character is boring?

No, I think the opposite. Characters like Zaeed are the boring ones because they are SOOOOOOOO cliche and overdone. Jacob is more interesting (to me) because he isn't like the rest, because he is "more human" and has moral stances. I find Jacob interesting because unlike the rest of the squadmembers, Jacob actually challenges Shepard at times on certain issues.

The thing that kills me about all this Jacob crap is that us Black folks FINALLY get a character in a game that isn't a stereotypical shucking and jiving fool and he gets so much hate for being normal.
It pisses me off that a decent character may get thrown to the wayside because of a bunch of insecure players.

I really don't see how racism is involved in any way about people hating Jacob. The human counsilor and his advisor are blacks more or less. Your Shepard could be black. You don't see chinese, indians or arabs ****ing about lack of representation in a video game.

Jacob is useless inside and outside combat. He is willingly working for terrorists but he hates mercs. WTF!?? He has to be the dumbest guy ever. His loyality mission is just aweful.

Jacob: "Shepard I am not able to focus because I got a distress message from a ten year old ship. And BTW my father was on it and also I have daddy issues."

Shepard: "Of course! I was beginning to think you were almost normal."

After the mission.

Shepard: "You must be traumatised after seeing the atrocities your father did."

Jacob: "I am good Shepard. Ready and focused."

Shepard: "So, you got more focused after you saw your father commit horrors that should scar a kid psychologicaly forever."

Jacob: "Yup."

Shepard: "... er... I need a drink"

That seems to be the case for alot of people on these forums. The funny thing is all my friends who I actually finally convinced to try Mass Effect think Jacob is "cool as hell",but most of them are Black so maybe we're biased, I dunno.
It's just really disheartening to see a positive Black character lambasted on a daily basis around here.

Jacob would be much more likable if he had a gold chain around his neck, a pant leg rolled up, a baseball cap on backwards and if he referred to Shepard as "Commanda S".

I play Gears, but Cole Train is a damn buffoon. Just the type of Black character that most gamers are comfortable with(read between the lines).

It's not about being depressed.

Jacob doesn't have a cool origin; and if he does, we never learn about it because he isn't willing to tell us anything. Everytime we try to learn something about his past he say it's "none of (our) business". How are you going to relate to someone like that?

Personally, I don't think he is *that* bad, but it would help a lot if he was more approachable.

I can see what you mean.  If you make fun of Jacob then you fit in but if you even mention a little dipleasure towards Tail or Garrus you will have all of their fans decend upon you in retaliation.  I enjoy Jacob for the same reason many do he is normal.  He has flaws and morals just like anyone else.  He is one of my favorite squad mates because I could picture someone like that today.

Shepard: We'll split up two and two.

Garrus: Are you sure?

Shepard: Jacob, stay with Garrus.

Jacob: Bad idea.

Jacob to Tali: Remember to introduce yourself to our ships AI.

Really?  Who would say that to a bloody Quarian?

Then you dont know many Chinese or Arab gamers. I have been playing games since the 80's with characters that 99% of the time dont represent me. The only way to get that to change it seems is to **** about it or vote with your wallet . It must be nice to turn on a tv or pop in a game and always be represented, myself and many others of different races dont always get that luxury.
